MAILBOX BRACKET Filed Oct. 21; 19 1s INVENTOR. Ea'rnesi'E. eHaas BY I Patented Apr. 27, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MAILBOX BRACKET Earnest E. De Haas, Wichita, Kans. Application October 21, 1946, Serial No. 704,741
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a mail box bracket and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a bracket of this kind which can be readily applied to a post or kindred support for maintaining in desired position a mail box preferably of a type such as used in rural districts.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a bracket of this kind which can be readily adjusted to accommodate itself to boxes of various sizes and which is of a structure to allow the same to be readily and easily installed in applied or working position.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a bracket of this kind which when in applied or working position is substantially concealed or hidden beneath the box with which it is employed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts of my improved mail box bracket whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a mail box bracket constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the assembly as illustrated in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the inner end portion of one of the bracket sections as herein embodied,
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the bracket comprises two sections substantially in duplicate and therefore it is believed that a detailed description of one will suflice for the purposes of disclosure.
Each of the sections comprises an elongated central fiat member I which is relatively narrow and which is provided at one end with a depending extension 2 which is provided at its opposite margins by the continued outstanding rings 3. The inner portion a of each of these rings 3 is arcuate On a predetermined radius and is continued along its outer margin by an outwardly directed lug or ear b which is substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the memher I, and is provided in its central portion with arms 8 are substantially in alignment and are disposed laterally beyond opposite sides of the member I with their inner portions overlapping with the inner extremities of the slot 1 in register. Associated with the screw 6 is a conventional holding or binding screw 9 whereby upon tightening of this nut 9 the arms 8 may be longitudinally adjusted in order to compensate for boxes of diiferent kinds or particularly of lateral dimensions. The outer extremity of each of these arms 8 is provided with the radially directed wings l0 which has contact with the box to hold the same in desired applied'position.
As is clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings it is to be noted that the screw is also rounded in cross section and on a radius sub stantially the same as that of the inner portions a of the rings 3.
In practice, the two bracket sections are ap: plied to a post at opposite sides thereof with the rings 3 and the extensions 2 butting the periphery of the post. By tightening the screws directed through the lugs c, the sections of the bracket may be effectively anchored to the post. The rings 3 possess sufficient inherent resiliency to readily allow the bracket sections to be applied to posts of varying diameters within certain limit-ations. When the bracket sections are applied the members I are substantially aligned and disposed in opposite directions.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a mail box bracket constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
1; A bracket means for supporting a mail box or the like upon a post or kindred support comprising two substantially duplicate sections, said sections embodying an elongated member, sup- 7 port engaging means carried by one end portion an opening 4 through which a clamping bolt is adapted to be disposed in a manner well known.
The outer end portion of the member I of each of the sections is provided therealong with a slot 5 of desired length and through which is adapted to be disposed a holding screw 6 which is 7 also disposed through the slot I provided in the inner portions of the box-holding arms 8. These oi the member, oppositely directed and laterally disposed arms at the outer extremity of the member and means for selectively securing said arms at different points lengthwise of the member at the outer end portion thereof.
2. A bracket as set forth in claim 1 wherein the laterally disposed arms and the member are provided with means for selectively holding the arms at different adjustments one lengthwise of the other.
3. A bracket as set forth in claim 1 wherein the support engaging means comprise laterally and oppositely directed resilient wings, an end of the member being provided with an extremity with'which said wings are carried.
EARNEST E. DE HAAS.
