SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,057, dated July 12, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. HILLs, of Cadillac, in the county of Wexford and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cant-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to improve the construction of cant-hooks in such a manner as to make them stronger and more convenient and serviceable.

A represents the stock of a cant-hook, which is made of woodin the ordinary manner. Upon the forward side of the lower part of the stock A is placed an iron strap or plate, B, which has a recessed or slotted lug, 0, formed upon its upper part. 7

D is the hook, the end of the shank of which is hinged in the recess of the lug C by a bolt or rivet. The upper end of the strap B is widened, is rounded off upon its outer side, and is tapered, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

E is a band, which passes around the stock A, and is driven down upon the tapered upper end of the strap B, binding the upper end of the said strap firmly to the stock A. The strap B is held from slipping upon the stock A by a bolt, F, passing through the said stock A and the strap B a little below the lug C, as shown in Fig. l.

Gr is a band, which passes around the lower ends of the stock A and strap B, to bind the lower end of the said strap B securely to the said stock A.

The point H of the hook D is made diamondshaped, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. This construction of the point H causes the said point to enter a log readily, and allows it to be easily withdrawn, as a slight turning movement will loosen it should it have any tendency to stick.

Upon the lower end of the hook D is formed a point or dog, I, to engage with the ground, skid, floor, or other support upon which a log lies, so that the hook D can serve as a fulcrum,

to allow the stock A to be used as a lever in moving a log, as shown in Fig. 1,When abandspike or other lever cannot be conveniently used.

Upon the lower end of the strap B is formed a point, J, to engage with the side of a log and prevent the end of the stock A from slipping upon the said log when the cant-hook is being used. I

The slot in the lug C is closed upon its lower side, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a stop,K, for the hook D to strike against, to prevent the point H from coming in contact with the lower part of the strap B and being dulled. The upper end of the-strap B serves as a stop to prevent the back of the hook D from coming in contact with the stock A and wearing it.

With this construction the strap B and hook D can be detached from the stock A by driving up the band E and removing the bolt F, which allows the band G to be driven off, carrying the strap B with it. The strap B and hook D can be replaced by reversing this operation.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a cant-hook, the combination of the band E, the bolt F, and the band G, with a strap, B, having the turned point J at the lower end and a wedge-shaped upper end, as shown and described.
