Description

F. E. BEST 'LQCK TUMBLER original Filed Jan. 8, 1942 INVENTOR.

Patented Apr. 27, 1948 UNITED STTES TENT OFFICE Original application January 8, 1942, Serial No. 425,952. Divided and this application January 15, 1945, Serial No. 572,904
10 Claims.
Nature and objects Description This and other objects are attained by the tumbler set forth in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of such a tumbler in its normal setting in a lock such as the .aforesaid unpickable lock of reference, as taken on line l--l, Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the tumbler only as taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
This tumbler i is of the fiat ring type, preferably provided with a continuous cylindrical exterior II and a partial cylindrical interior l2 concentric therewith adapted to sliding adjustment on lock core parts I! and I8 and having an inwardly extending inverted stair-step-like key-bit-engaging portion l3 having steps I 4 representing the combination increments thereof.
These steps preferably have concentric runs, 26, and risers 21 that are of congruent angles adapted to form fit a key bit It as shown. All runs are preferably of the same angular extension.
This stair-step section is terminated by a line l6 that is preferably of an angle congruent with those of the aforedescribed risers, and that is adapted to abut a mating lock core part l1.
Diametrically opposite said stair-step-section is an inwardly projecting combination-notch section l9 bounded on the inside by a cylindrical surface 20 substantially concentric with the exterior surface I I, and terminal lines 28 and 29.
This combination notch section is of greater angular extension than said stair-step section bounded by diametrical lines t l-2| and 22-22 as shown, and is adapted to receive a number of combination notches of different depths such as the deep notch 23 and the shallow notch 24. Any number of both types of notches preferably up to It! may be provided within the space between the two said notches shown which are in the extreme positions.
These notches are provided to accommodate a locking bar 25 of the core and are angularly spaced in conformity to its angular position in relation to the respective stair steps [4.
The shallow notch represents a lock operating and control notch while a deep notch represents a lock operating notch only.
It is obvious that modifications may be resorted to in the practical production of the said tumblers. For instance, corners may be rounded and the outer cylindrical surface serrated, etc., so long as the essential elements required for practical operation are observed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is:
l. A look tumbler comprising a fiat ring having inwardly extending, key-bit-engaging steps and an inwardly extending portion adapted to have combination notches cut therein.
2. A look tumbler comprising a fiat ring having centerwardly extending key-bit-engaging' steps and a centerwardly extending arcuate section having a number of combination notches in the said arcuate section thereof. I
3. A look tumbler comprising a cylindrical rin having inwardly extending key-bit-engaging steps and an inwardly extending arcuate section adapted to have. combination notches cut therein.
4. A look tumbler comprising a practically fiat ring having inwardly extending key-bit-engaging stepped section and an oppositely disposed inwardly-extending notch accommodating section adapted to have a number of combination notches out therein.
5. A lock tumbler comprising a practically flat ring having a centerwardly-extending key-bitengaging stepped section and an oppositely disposed centerwardly-extending combination notch section having a number of permuted combination notches therein of a number of depths.
6. A look tumbler comprising a flat ring having an inwardly-extending, key-bit-engaging stepped section and an oppositely disposed inwardly-extending combination notch section having a number of difierently oriented combination notches cut therein.
'7. A combinated lock tumbler comprising a flat ring, having a practically unbroken circular outer. edge and having combination configurations and key-bit-engaging steps on its inner edge.
8. A look tumbler comprising a flat, concentric ring having a practically unbroken outer edge and having inwardly-extending, key-bit-engaging steps and an inwardly-extending notch section, concentric with said ring, said notch section having a number of variously oriented combination notches of a, variety of radial depths formed in the inner edge thereof.
9. A lock tumbler comprising a cylindrical ring having a practically unbroken exterior surface and having inwardly-extending, key-bit-engaging steps and having an inwardly-extending notch-accommodating section adapted to have combination notches cut in the inner portion thereof.
10. A lock tumbler comprising a ring havin an inwardly-extending notch-accommodating section adapted to have combination notches cut in the inner edge thereof, and an inwardly-extending, key-bit-engaging, stair-stepped section 4 positioned diametrically opposite to a portion of said notch section.
