Description

April 20, 1948. N. L; WINGATE 2,439,833
FOLDABLE GARMENT HANGER Fi 1ed Segt. 13, '1946 j va/y far- WWO Z; VV/i/ afe 097/0: aya- Patented Apr. 20, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,439,838: I j g L v FOLDABLE GARMENT HANGER 7 Norman L -WingataAlbany, Ga. Application September 13, 1946, Serial No. 696,773 I 2 Claims. (01. 22394) The present invention relates to garment hangers and is more particularly concerned with a hanger of the foldable type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to with simple and efficient means to lock the'foldable members in operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to of simpler and more compact construction than prior devices.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable garment hanger of few parts which can be manufactured at a low cost.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device with parts broken away to show interior construction.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevation showing the two foldable members in locked position.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the lock.
Like numerals, as used in the description and drawings, designate the same parts of construction.
l and H are the two foldable arms of the garment hanger. Arm l I carries a hook l2 which projects upwardly. In the shank of this hook is a perpendicular aperture I3 and pivotally mounted in the lower, open end of said aperture as at I4, is the upper extremity of arm H]. The said arm is provided on this extremity with an upwardly projecting lug [5 designed to fit in the aperture l3.
Pivotally secured to the shank of the hook is a U-shaped locking member. The arms l6 embrace the shank and their ends are mounted on a pivot pin H. The shank of hook I2 is preferably rectangular with a rounded shoulder [8. The back of the locking member is arcuate so as to ride over said shoulder when the said member is raised to unlock the arms. When it is in the locked position, the back of the locking member impinges the back of lug l5 contiguous to end, thus locking the arm [0 in raised position, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
To facilitate the lifting of the locking member so as to release arm H), the said member is provided on its arms with buttons l9 positioned intermediate the back and pivot pin l'l. Because of its weight and the location of its pivotal point the lock member is normally in a lowered position and the forward shoulder of lug I5 is rounded, as at 20, so as to ride under the lock member when the arm I 0 is raised, thus lifting the locking member. When the lug is seated in the aperture I-3, the back of the locking member will drop back of the lug and secure the two arms of the garment hanger in extended position.
A-s different embodiments may be made of this inventive concept and modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it will be understood that the matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative merely and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
1. A foldable garment hanger of the class described comprising, a pair of arm members, one of said arm members being provided with an upwardly-extending shank part on its inner end, a hooked part on the upper end of said shank part, said shank part being substantially rectangular in cross-section and provided with a channeled recess in its inner side, the inner surface of that portion of said hooked part which is adjacent said shank part being arcuately-shaped so as to provide a rounded shoulder, a lug eX- tending upwardly from the inner end of the other of said arm members and having its lower end portion pivotally mounted within said recess, and. a U-shaped lock member having a pair of spaced substantially-parallel arm parts connected at their outer ends by an integral transverse back part, the inner end portions of said arm parts being pivotally secured to said shank part so that said lock member may be rocked upwardly and downwardly between inoperative and operative positions respectively, all adapted and arranged whereby the said other arm member may be moved on its pivot between a collapsed position with respect to the one arm member wherein the upper portion of said lug projects outwardly from the recess in the shank part and the lock member is in its inoperative position out of engagement with the outer surface of said lug wherein said lug is wholly disposed within said recess and its outer surface is impinged by said back part of the locking member.
2. A foldable garment hanger of the class described comprising, a pair of arm members, one of said arm members being provided with an upwardly-extending shank part, said shank part being substantially rectangular in cross-section and provided with a channeled recess in its inner side, the inner surface of that portion of said hooked part which is adjacent said shank part being arcuately shaped so as to provide a rounded shoulder, a lug extending upwardly from the inner end of the other of said arm members and having its lower end portion pivotally mounted Within said recess, the inner upper corner part of said. lug being rounded, and a U-shaped look member having a pair of spaced substantially parallel arm parts connected at their outer ends by an integraltransverse back part, the inner end portions of said arm parts being pivotally secured to said shank part so that said lock member may be rocked upwardly and downwardly between inoperative and operative positions re spectively, said back part being arcuately shaped so as to readily ride over said shoulder when said locking member is being moved between said positions, all adapted and arranged whereby the said other arm member may be moved on its pivot between a collapsed position with respect to the one arm member, wherein the upper por- 4 tion of said lug projects outwardly from the recess in the shank part and the lock member is in its inoperative position out of engagement with the outer surface of said lug, wherein said lug is wholly disposed within said recess and its outer surface is impinged by said back part of the locking member.
