CENTRIFGAL FAN Carl 0. Bergstrom, Boston, Mass., assignor, by mesne assignments, to Westinghouse Electric Corporation, a corporation of Pennsylvania Application September 26, 1944, Serial No. 555,780
1 Claim. (Cl. 230-259) This invention relates to centrifugal fans and relates more particularily to centrifugal fans which may be supported from a ceiling and which may be used for drawing large .volumes of air surface thereof by the screws 20.
The motor Il is supported upon the ring I6 by the arms 2|. l
The inlet plate I4 has a curved lower portion which converges downwardly and extends withirom above the ceiling and for discharging it 5 in the central opening in the side plate E. into the space below the ceiling. The relatively long bolts 26 extend through In passenger vehicles such as' railway passenthe annular ring I8 and below same and support ger cars, buses. and rapid transit cars, comthe deflector plates 22 which are formed as frusfortable conditions may be maintained in sumturns of cones. The plates22 have the air demer by blowing large volumes of outdoor air lection faces 24 which may be formed at angles through the space occupied by the passengers. of 19 to the horizontal. This is known as pressure ventilation. The upper plate 22 is spaced from the ringv This invention provides a centrifugal fan par- I8 by the relatively long, tubular spacer 25 which ticularly suitable for pressure ventilation of pasextends around the bolts 26 and which has its senger vehicles. It is adapted to be attached to l5 10Wer end angled to conform with the angled a ceiling around a circular aperture therein and surface of the upper plate. The similar tubular discharges outdoor air drawn from above the spacers 21 extend around the bolts 26 between ceiling outwardly as well as downwardly into the plates 22; have their upper and lower surthe passenger space. Several such fans may be faces angled to conform with the angled surspaced along the longitudinal center of a pasv faces'of the plates, and space the plates 22 the senger vehicle. i same distances apart.
An object of the invention is to improve cen- The side plate 6 in its air delivery portion, trifugal fans used for pressure ventilation. and the backplate 1 are shaped so as to extend The invention will `now be described with refsubstantially parallel to the angled faces 24 of erence to the drawing, of which: 25 the deliector plates 22. The fan wheel thus turns Fig. 1 is a plan View looking downwardly upon and discharges the air moved thereby in streams a fan embodying this invention; which are in alignment with the deflection faces Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the lines 2-2 of the deector plates with the result that there of Fig. 1 except that the motor is not shown in is a minimum of turbulence and noise.` section; y In operation, the fan draws air from above the Fig. 3 is a plan view looking upwardly upon ceiling and forces it downwardly and outwardly the fan of Figs. 1 and 2, with a portion of the into the passenger space. Experience has shown back plate of the fan wheel removed, and that when the air is blown directly downwardly Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view along the into the passenger space. the effect is uncomlines 4-4 of Fig. l. 35 fortable due to the large volumes it is necessary 'I'he fan wheel is made up of the blades 5, the to handle. By blowing the air slightly downside plate 6 to which the front edges of the blades wardly, as disclosed herein, it penetrates all porare attached as by welding, the backplate 1 to tions of the passenger Space and Witheut diS- which the back edges of the blades are attached, comfort. and the hub 8 to which the backplate is at- 40 While one embodiment of the invention has tached by the rivets 9. Thevertical shaft I0 been described for the purpose 0f llllstratien, of the electric motor Il extends through the hub it should be understood that the invention is not 8 and has a lower threaded portion upon which `limited to the exact apparatus and arrangement is screwed the nut l2 which retains the hub of apparatus illustrated as modifications thereof upon the shaft i0. 45 may be suggested by those skilledl in the art The ceiling I3 has an aperture 30 which is cirwithout departure from the essence ofthe incular except for the inward extensions 23, for vention. receiving the fan assembly which is supported What is claimed is: within the aperture as best illustrated by Figs. 2 A pressure Ventilating fan COmpriSing a motel and 4. I i having a shaft extending vertically downward, The centrally apertured inlet plate I4 issta fan wheel on the lower end of said shaftand tached as by the bolt l5 between the annular a plurality 0f spaced defleCtOrS formed as frusrings I6 and Il. The annular ring I8 is attrums of cones having axes coinciding with the tached to the ring l1 by the bolt I9 and overlies axis of said shaft, supported around said wheel, the extensions 23 and is attached to thelupper 55 said wheel having a side plate terminating adiacent the upper end of the uppermost of said deneetoi's' and extending parallel thereto, said wheel having a back plate terminating adjacent the upper end of the lowermost of said detlectors and extending parallel thereto, said back plate being Number imperforate whereby ali of the air from said wheel 5 142,842
