Application April 13, 193s, semi Np. 201,169 s claims. (ci. 23o-274)l may be apertured at several points along a central longitudinal line, and the fans of this invention may be attached to the ceiling so as to draw the outdoor air through the apertures and to discharge it into the cars.
An object of the invention is to provide pressureventilation for passenger vehicles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a quiet, efficient fan for supplying air without drafts into a space below same.
Other` objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken together with the drawing.
The invention will not be described with reference to the drawing, of which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view looking downwardly, of one embodiment of a fan of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partially in section, of the fan of Fig. 1,' and Fig. 3 is a plan view looking upwardly, of the fan of Figs. 1 and 2.
The fan wheel is made up of the inclined blades 5, the side plate 6 to which the front edges of the blades 5 are attached as by welding, the back plate 'I to which the back edges of the blades 5 are attached, and the hub 8. The vertical shaft 9 of the motor I I extends through the hub 8 and has a threaded lower portion upon which is screwed the nut IIJ which retains the hub 8 upon the shaft 9.
The ceiling I2 is apertured and the fan assembly is mounted within the aperture with the motor I I above the ceiling and with the fan wheel extending below same.
The metal drum member I3 is formed with the lower, outwardly extending, horizontal flange I4 and the upper inwardly extending, horizontal flange I5. rThe motor II and the fan wheel it supports, are supported by means of the spider member I6 which is attached to the flange l5 by the bolts I1. The upper portion of the inlet member 28 is welded to the inner portion of the flange I5. y The lower flange I4 and the upper vends of the machine screws 22 which pass through aroundsaid wheel for dividing the air discharged lthe other of said horizontal portions.

The circular sheet member 20 forms the lowermost portion of the assembly and is mounted directly and centrally below the fan wheel. 5 Welded to the member 20 are the machine screw receptacles 2| which receive the threaded lower apertures in the flange I4 and upper annular member I8 and which are supported fromthe flange I4. 4
The three spacing cylinders 23, 24 and 25 are mounted on each machine screw 22 between the upper annular member I8 and the circular sheet member 20. The annular diffusing member 26 is supported between the cylinders 23 and 24 and a similar annular diffusing member 21 is sup. ported between the cylinders 24 and 25.
In operation, the fan draws air from above the ceiling I2, throughthe inlet 28 and the air is discharged between the annular members 26 and 21 and between them and the upper annular members I8 and the lower circular sheet 20. The horizontally extending circular member 20 and annular members I8, 26 and 2l separate the air discharged from the fan into horizontal laminations and cause it to be projected substantially horizontally to a substantial distance from the fan before it falls into the underlying space, thus enabling considerably larger volumes of air to be discharged without drafts, than has been possible heretofore.
nWhile one embodiment of the invention has been described for the purpose of illustration, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact apparatus and arrangement of apparatus disclosed herein, as many departures may be suggested by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A fan assembly comprising a vertical shaft, an electric motor connected to the upper end of said shaft, a centrifugal fan wheel on the lower end of said shaft, means comprising a plurality'l of substantially horizontal, annular members by said wheel into a plurality of superimposed, substantially horizontal, air streams, a supporting member having an upwardly extending portionand two substantially horizontal portions, an inlet shroud supported from one of said horizontal portions, and means for supporting said annular members in spaced relationship, from Y2. A fan assembly comprising a vertical shaft, an electric motor connected to the upper end of saidshaft, a centrifugal fan wheel on the lower end of said shaft, a substantially horizontal, circular sheet member below saidI wheel, a substantially horizontal, annular member around said wheel, said members serving to divide the air discharged by said wheel into a plurality of superimposed, substantially horizontal layers, a supporting member for said assembly having an upwardly extending portion and having an inwardly andan outwardly extending substantially horizontal portion, an inlet shroud attached to said inwardly extending portion, means for supporting said motor from said inwardly extending portion, and means for supporting said annular and circular members from said outwardly extending portion.

A fan assembly comprising in combination, a motor having a vertical, downwardly extending shaft,l a centrifugal fan wheel on the lower end of said shaft, an inlet shroud, an annular air deflecting member around said wheel, a circular sheet, deflecting member below said wheel, and supporting means having external attaching means and having upwardly extending means supporting said motor above said Aattaching means and having downwardly extending means supporting said deflecting members below said attaching means.

A fan assembly comprising in combination, a motor having a vertical, downwardly extending shaft, a centrifugal fan'wheel on the lower end of said shaft, an inlet shroud, an annular air deiiecting member around said wheel, a circular sheet, defiecting member below said wheel, and supporting means having external attaching means and having upwardly extending means supporting said motor and said shroud above said attaching means and having downwardly Iextending means supporting said deflecting members below said attaching means.

A fan assembly comprising a motor having a downwardlyv extending shaft, a centrifugal fan wheel on the lower` end of said shaft, an annular air deiiector around said wheel, a circular sheet deflector below said wheel, a supporting member having an upwardly extending portion and an inwardly extending and an outwardly extending portion, means for supporting said motor from said inwardly extending portion, and means for supporting said deiiectors from said outwardly extending portion.

A fan assembly comprising a. motor having a downwardly extending shaft, a centrifugal fan wheel on the lower end of said shaft, an annular airv deflector around said wheel, a circular sheet deilector below said wheel, an inlet shroud, a supporting member having an upwardly extending portion and an inwardly extending and an outwardly extending portion, means for supporting said motor and said shroud from said inwardly extending portion, and means for supporting said deiiectors from said outwardly extending portion. 7. A fan assembly comprising a motor having a downwardly extending shaft, a-centrifugal -fan wheel on the4 lower end o f said shaft, an annular air deflector around said wheel,l a circular sheet deilector below said wheel, a supporting vmember having an upwardly extending portion and an inwardly extending and an outwardly extending portion, means for supporting said deflectors from said outwardly extending portion, and an inlet shroud forming an extension of said inwardly extending portion.
8. A fan assembly comprising a motor having a downwardly extending shaft, a centrifugal fan wheel on the lower end ofsaid shaft, an annular air deector around said wheel, a circular sheet deector below said wheel, asup'porting member having an upwardly extending portion and an inwardly extending and an outwardly extending portion, means for supporting said deflectors from said outwardly extending portion, means for supporting said motor from said inwardly extending portion, andl an inlet shroud forming an extension of said inwardly extending portion.
