Patented Apr. 6, 1948 1 WIRE-END LOOP FORMING AND TWISTING MEANS Emilio M. Adams, Miami, Fla. Application February 14, 1945, Serial No. 577,771 2 Claims. (01. 140-104) The present invention relates to ways and means of forming loops and twisting coacting wire-ends, the same being expressly, but not necessarily, adapted for looping, twisting and coiling the free end portion of so-called piano wires used as leaders for fishing lines.
As the introductory statement of the invention implies, the preferred embodiments of the invention herein shown and described may Well be used for other loop forming and wire twisting purposes, but for sake of clearness and a comprehensive understanding, the disclosure is primarily directed to the construction of leaders, and is of such simplicity as to obviate thenecessity of employing far more complicated and expensive tools and methods now commonly utilized in the trade.
One form of the invention is characterized by a simple and economical, as well as readily usable slotted block, the slot to accommodate body portion of the wire, and said block being provided at one end with a detent and twisting finger which serves totwist and coil the wire terminal while the loop is held with one hand and the body portion of the wire is employed as a journal around which the block is rotated.
Another and generically similar form of the invention is characterized by a flat stamped plate, this having struck out and suitably bent and shaped portions to facilitate twisting the wire-end as the plate is rotated clockwise around the body portion of the wire.
The principal object of the invention is to structurally and otherwise improve upon wire bending and twisting devices of more complicated styles and types.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a length of piano wire before the left-hand end is bent.
Figure 2 is the perspective viewshowing the left-hand end bent upon itself as a starting step in the formation of the elongated customary loop.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the invention itself, this being one form thereof, and illustrating approximately how the desired ends are attained.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section on the plane of the line 4--4 of Figure 3, looking in the di rection of the arrows.
Figure 5 is an end view of the block, that is a view of Figure 3 observing same in the direction from left to right.
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing the finished loop equipped leader.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the terminal preliminarily twisted to adapt it to fit into the wire twister.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a modification of the invention, this being the stamped plate style.
Figure 9 is an edge elevation which may be said to be taken at 9--9, looking in the direction,
of the arrow in Figure 8.
, Figure 10 is a plan view showing the manner in which this form of the invention is employed.
Attention is first directed to Figures 1 to 6, inclusive, particularly attention is called to Figure 1 showing the length of wire, so-called piano wire, this denoted at 12, same being the form of said wire before it is in any manner bent. In Figure 2 the wire l2'is bent upon itself as at l3 to form the body portion of the final loop. The free terminal end is indicated at M. As seen in Figure 3 the free end has been bent toward the main body portion and partly coiled by hand, as indicated at [5. This preliminary coiling of the wire is necessary in order to fit the same into the wire twister. The twister in this form of the invention is in the form of a substantially rectangular block H; of appropriate dimensions and material. The block is formed with an adapter slot at I! which opens thru opposite transverse ends thereof. The left-hand end of the block is provided with an obliquely directed detent and twisting finger I 8. This serves to coact with the terminal M of the Wire.
In practice looped partly coiled leader is placed {in the adapter or slot 51 as shown in Figure 3. The looped end is allowed to protrude beyond the finger equipped end. While holding the loop l3 in the left hand, the block is turned in a clockwise direction, using the leader as a jourha]. The finger I8, pressing against the wire end l4, serves to twist and coil said wire end around the main body portion to provide a tightly wound coil formation I5 as shown in the finished article seen in Figure 6.
Referring now to the modification seen in Figure 8 the wire twister also comprises a body, the same being denoted by the numeral Ilia. This is in the form of a flat plate stamped out to assume the configuration and shape illustrated.
The opposite end portions are knurled or milled as indicated at the point 20 to'provide convenient finger grips. The plate in the main is of rectangular formation with triangular or V-shaped end portions. The main body portion has an adapter 2! struck out therefrom and bent laterally to assume the shape shown. The left-hand edge is provided with a slot whose edge portions are denoted -by the numerals 2,2 and 23. ,At this slotted :point the plate .is also provided with a struck out tongue which is spaced and bent laterally as indicated at 24, this being directed oppositely to the open side of the ,adapterand keeper 2|.
In practice, and in using this form of the invention the body portion of the leader wire -:is
threaded underneath the adapter 2| as also underneath the finger 24. Then, 'as before explained, while holding the loop the plate -,lfia ,is turned in a clockwise :tmanner using the body portion of the leaderas an axle or journal, thereby winding the projecting 'free end portion of the wire to twist and coil same in the manner shown in Figure 10.
It is to be noted that the tip or free end portion of the finger 24 is cut at a 30 angle. .The purpose of this is-so that theplece ofleader inserted in the adjacent slot will tend'to remain in the uppermost corner ofthe slot and at :right angles to the main leader during ,the twisting and coiling procedure. It is also to be noted that the-spaced surfaces 22 and23 embrace "and act -as a bearing for the coils as they 'are'bulltup.
A careful consideration of the foregoing ,description in conjunction with the invention ,as illustrated in theidrawings will "enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding andirnpress'ion of the alleged features of -merit and novelty sufficient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A loop forming wire twister of the class described comprising a flat plate having an elongated rectangular portion struck out from its central area, said portion being offset and constituting an adapter for the body portion of the wire to be twisted, and having a finger also struck out from the body portion and coacting with said :adapter, and further having a slot for-med at one edge in-close proximity to the finger to accommodate the coils as they are :wound.
2.,A .loop .forming wire twister of the class .descrihed comprising a fiat plate having an elongated rectangular portion struck out from its central area, said portion being ofiset and constituting ,an adapter for the body portion of the 'wireto be twisted, and having a finger also struck out from the body portion and coacting with said adapter, and further having a slot formed at one edge in close proximityto the finger to accommodate the coils as they are Wound, said finger being struck out with its freeendpointing in a direction opposite to the free edge of said offset adapter, said finger being also .offset in relation to the plane of the main body of the plate, said .finger, adapter and slot being in alignment with each other.
