Description

April 6, 1948: 7H. E. RHODES v COMB Filed March 6, 1946 INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. 6, 1948 COMB Harry E. Rhodes, Kent, Ohio, assignor to Parco Manufacturing Ohio, a partnership Company, Cuyahoga Falls,
Application March 6, 1946, Serial No. 652,288
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a pocket comb.
An object of the invention is to provide a comb of relatively small size having effective means thereon for firmly gripping the same between the fingers, whereby the comb is adapted to be removed from a pocket and unobtrusively used with a natural swiping motion to comb the hair. That is, the comb is adapted to be used in a manner which to all outward appearances simulates smoothing the hair with the hand.
Other objects of the invention will be manifest from the following brief description and the accompanying drawings.
f the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a comb embodying the features of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a comb of hard rubber, plastic resin or other suitable material, the same being of approximately the mean length of the first and second fingers of an average mans hand, or slightly shorter, and including a relatively rigid or solid back I0 and a series of spaced teeth II, I l extending therefrom in the plane of the comb. At opposite sides of the back l0 may be longitudinally extending, transversely concave recesses l2 and 13 which curve outwardly of the teeth II from the ends of the comb, for conforming to a slight natural curving of the fingers in the use of the comb, as will be described later.
The portion of the back In between the recesses l2 and I3 may be relatively thick at the central part of the comb but tapering toward the ends thereof, as shown in Figure 2, to conform to a lune-shaped space naturally formed between the first and second fingers of a mans hand in the above referred-to curved condition thereof. That is, when the first or second fingers are curved with the ends thereof touching or closely adjacent they define a lune-shaped space between the same.
In the use of the comb it is grasped by conforming the fingers along the curved recesses I2 curving of the fingers being effective to firmly grip the comb with a minimum of muscular efiort. Ihe transverse concavity of the recesses prevents slipping of the comb from the fingers in transverse direction. This unique gripping means makes it possible for a man to remove the comb from his pocket firmly but comfortably gripped between his fingers, and with substantially all of the comb concealed, so that with a natural brushing movement of the hand to the head he may comb his hair in an unobtrusive manner.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A comb comprising a, back and teeth extending therefrom in the plane thereof, said back having longitudinally extending, transversely concave recesses at opposite sides thereof extending the full length of said back for receiving adjacent fingers of a person's hand, said recesses being curved outwardly of said teeth from opposite ends of the back to accommodate correspondingly curvate condition of said fingers longitudinally thereof.
2. A comb comprising a back and teeth extending therefrom in the plane thereof, said back having longitudinally extending, transversely concave recesses at opposite sides thereof extending the full length of said back for receiving ad- .iacent fingers of a persons hand, said recesses being curved outwardly of said teeth from opposite ends of the back to accommodate correspond ingly curvate condition of said fingers longitudinally thereof, the portion of said back between said recesses being thickest intermediate said ends of the back and tapering outwardly.
