This invention relates to telephone booths of thehood -type.
The object ofv this invention. is the provision of a telephone booth oi the type above referred to for indoor and outdoor usewhich will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and wherein the telephone apparatus is eifectively protected from .dust, rain and other adverse weather conditions. i
According to this invention, a telephone booth of the hood type is provided in which a number of walls and .a roof formingv the booth cooperate with a partition to form a compartment within the booth proper. for housing the telephone apparatus, the. partition having an opening fitted with a door movable from its closed position to a point substantially in line parallel relative to the rear wall of..the booth so ,as to.
permit access to the telephone apparatus in the interior of the compartment. M
A ceiling in the compartment coopierates with theroof of the booth to fo'nn'a. secohd compartment for housing a lighting fixture and a switch: ing mechanism. Such mechanism isactua'ted by the opening and closing of the door inthe partition for controlling the operation of a l ainp; in a manner to light the compartment upon. the opening oi the door and to extinguish thellam p uponthe closing or. the door, which closing is efiectedbyspring means tensioned during the movement of the door toward its open position.
Means in the compartment is provided for reenforcing the booth and for supporting the telephone apparatus in the form of a 'coin cjollector device. The lower disposed wall of the compartment serves as a shelf ,iorreceiving a telephone directory, and another shelf secured to the booth walls outside of the compartment, serves as a writing shellf. I
A frame secured to the rearwall of the booth is provided with means interengaging with m'eans carried by a second frame adapted to besecured to a wall interiorly or exteriorly of a room the latter wall serving as a support for the booth assembly.
Other novel features of this invention will appear from the following description and by the claims appended thereto, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of the telephone booth shown in perspective with the door of the compartment in the open position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the door of the compartment in the closed position;
2 Claims. (Cl. 20- 35) 2 Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the hinges of the door in section; v
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the booth taken on line 3-4 of Fig. 3; the door of the compartment being shown in closed position;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view talrenon lines 5 -5 of Fig. 3 showing the telephone apparatus mounted on a bracket, and the telephone directory supported by a chain. from one of the side walls at the interior of the compartment.
6 is a partial plan view in horizontal section taken on line 6-45 of Fig. 3; showing the lighting fixture and its operating connection with the door of the compartment;
Fig. '7 is a vertical section taken. on line l--l of Fig. 5'; showing the coin-collector in position in the compartment;
Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 5; showing the manner of securing the bracket for the coin-collector to the rear wall and side wall in the'compartment;
Fig. 9 is a detailed. view showing frames for securing the booth to a support; and p Fig. 1D is a partial view enlarged showing the operating connection of the door to the switching device "controlling the operation of the lighting fixture.
The telephone booth of this invention consists of two side walls WI, W2, a rear wall W3 and front wall portions W4 and W5, the portion W5 of the front wall cooperating with the-side wall Wl and the front molding portion ed of a partition P to form an entrance for the booth. A roof R is secured; by a plurality of screws SC best seen in. Figs. 4, '7 and 8, to the side walls WI and W2, to the rear wall W3 and to the front wall portions Wt and W5 and serve to hold these walls in assembled relation to each other at their upper end. V I
The partition P is fitted by tongues and. grooves to the rear wall W3 to the front wall portions W4 and W5 "as shown in Fig. 6 and is secured to the roof R as by a number of screws SCI shown in Fig. 7, while the partition, as shown in Fig. 4 is secured along the front wall portion W4 by a number of screws S04. The partition P is provided. with a rectangular opening OP best seen in Fig. 1 fitted with a door (1, pivoted to the rear wall W3 as by a pair of hinges HI and H2 having springs sp shown in Fig. 3 serving to move the door automatically from its open position shown in Fig. 1 to the closed position as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 when released by the occupant of the booth following the completion of a telephone conversation.
The side wall W2, the front wall portion W4, and the rear wall W3 cooperate with the partition wall P to form a compartment for the telephone apparatus and to these walls and partitions are secured asby a number of screws S08, wooden strips or cleats cl, c2, c3, 04 provided for securing, as by a number of wooden screws, a ceiling C forming in cooperation with the roof R a second compartment. Ceiling C is provided with an opening P2 best seen in Fig. 6 in which is fitted a lighting fixture in having arms 17 and bl secured to the ceiling as by a plurality of screws S03, while a switching mechanism (not shown) enclosed in a casing ll forming a part of the lighting fixture is operatively connected to the door at by a rod rd having one end engaging pin l2 carried by a crank l3 secured to the door 01 adjacent the top-disposed hinge H l of the door and extending into the compartment formed by v the ceiling C and the roof R.
An angle piece l1 shown inFigs. 1, 2, 4, 6 and secured to the top end portion of rear wall W3' and to the partition wall P is provided for housing the crank I3 and this end of the connecting rod for preventing access to the switching mechanism by unauthorized persons.
To the corner of the compartment formed by the right side wall W2 and rear wall W3 is secured, as by a plurality of screws M, a reenforcing bracket I5 best seen in Figs. 5 and 8 to which is secured the telephone apparatus l6 and to the right-side disposed wall W2, to the wall portion W4, to the rear wall W3 and the partition wall P at the lower end portion of the compartment thus formed is secured a bottom wall W6 serving to reenforce the booth at its lower end while serving as a shelf at the interior of the com partment in addition to a shelf l8 secured to the rear wall W3 and to side wall WI as by a plurality of similar screws I9.
To the rear wall of the booth as shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 is secured as by a plurality of similar screws S02 an inverted L-shaped frame, shown in detail in Fig. 9, the vertically disposed arm 22 of which is provided with holes H3 and H4 for engagement with dowel pins dl and d2 carried by the vertically disposed side molding of a rectangularly shaped frame F. The moldings 20 and 2| of this frame are provided with similar clearance holes 23 for receiving screws SC6 Figs. 4, 5, and 8 serving for securing frame F to an outside or inside wall of a house or to any convenient upright support as the case may be, while the L-shaped frame as above mentioned is secured to the booth by the screws S02 and the booth in turn is secured to the rectangular shaped'frame F and to the L- shaped frame as shown in Figs. 4, 5, 7 and 8 by a number of similar screws 26 inserted from the interior of the booth in addition to screws S02 the latter extending through similar clearance holes 21 in each of the frames for engaging the rear wall W3 and the side wall WI of the booth as best seen in Figs. 5 and 6. According to this construction, the engagement of the dowel pins dl and d2 carried by the rectangularly shaped frame, in the-holes H3 and H4of the inverted L-shaped frame in addition to the securing of the rear wall of the booth to both the L-shaped frame and the rectangularly shaped frame F to the support of the booth afford a strong securing arrangement against any unauthorized attempt at removing the booth from its support.
Astud ST secured to the side wall W2 is provided for hooking one end of a chain CH to the other end of which is attached the cover C0 of a telephone directory, the chain being made of any desired length so as to support the directory vertically as shown in Fig. 8 or of sufiicient length so as to permit the directory to lay flat-wise on the bottom disposed wall W6 of the compartment.
