This invention relates to controllers for motor driven printing presses and other machines, and more particularly to controllers embodying signalling means.
Printing presses are now commonly provided with controllers comprising a push button which must be operated preparatory to starting of the press for running and preparatory to each start for inching. Also controllers embodying such push button are commonly provided with a gong or other signal means rendered efiective upon operation of the push button and with means insuring against starting for inching or for running until the signal has functioned for adequate warning of starting.
The present invention has among its objects to improve such controllers and more particularly to enable inching to be effected with a saving of time and without sacrifice of safety characteristics. I
More specifically an object of the invention is to render the signal means effective for the usual period of time prior to starting for running or inching after a prolonged stoppage of the press, while enabling within a limited period of time after stoppage restarting for inching as quickly as progressive operation of two buttons can be effected, the provisions for expedited starting becoming automatically ineffective if the period of stoppage of the press exceeds the aforementioned limited period of time.
Another object is to accomplish the aforementioned results in a very simple and economical way.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear.
One embodiment of the invention is diagrammatically illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and the same will now be described, it being understood that the embodiment illustrated is susceptible of various modifications without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
The controller diagrammatically illustrated in the drawing is designed for a printing press having a Well known motor drive comprising a small motor SM and a large motor LM. As the motors may vary in type and their main switches may vary accordingly, such main switches which will be assumed to be electroresponsive are merely indicated by blocks designated MS and M8 The main switches MS and MS are respectively under the control of relays SMR and LMR which in turn are under the control of the usual crosshead type of motor driven controller C, shown only in part. As will be understood, the controller C is customarily designed for speed control of the large motor but for simplicity of illustration speed control parts of the controller have not been shown. The illustrated parts of controller C comprise a crosshead I movable by a pilot motor PM over three parallel sets of contacts hereinafter more specifically referred to. The pilot motor comprises an armature a and series field windings f and f adapted to be connected in circuit selectively to afford reverse operations of the motor to move the crosshead I in opposite directions selectively. The crosshead I is shown in a position to enable inching operations, as hereinafter set forth.
The further control means shown in the drawing comprises the following relays commonly employed in printing press control and in this instance supplied with energizing current from a direct current circuit L, L
An electroresponsive relay 5 commonly known as the stop relay, which requires energization for starting and running, thus afiording stopping by its deenergization;
An electroresponsive relay 6 commonly known as the reset relay, which requires energization as an incident to energization of the relay 5;
An electroresponsive signal device 1 energized upon response of relay 6 and maintained energized by said relay;
An electroresponsive relay 8 commonly known as the inch relay, which is responsive to energize the small motor relay SMR for starting when the crosshead I of controller 0 is in the position illustrated;
An electroresponsive relay 9 commonly known as the safe-after-inch relay, which is energized by response of the relay 8 to deenergize the signal device I and also the reset relay, said relay 9 being self-maintaining pending release of relay 5;
An electroresponsive relay In commonly known as the on relay, which is responsive to efiect response of the relay 8 with the results aforementioned, and also efiective to complete a circuit for the pilot motor PM for operation of the crosshead I in a direction to continue operation of the small motor for a given period and then to eifect operation of the large motor, disconnecting the small motor from circuit;
An electroresponsive relay II commonly known as the safe relay and which is responsive to prevent energization of either the relay 8 or the relay II).
In practice the control means illustrated would be supplemented by an off relay to energize relay I3 releases prior to restarting then the cycle of operation first above described must be repeated.
If, on the other hand, the button 23 is pressed while relay l3 remains closed, then the consequent response of the relay 6 efiects immediate energization of relay 5. Thereupon restartin may be effected immediately by pressing either the inch button 22 or the on button 2| immediately upon response of relay 5 which must precede restarting. The signal device I is energized and remains energized until restarting is effected just as in the case first above described where starting is delayed by delayed response of the relay l3, and as will be apparent any number of inching operations may be made in the quick succession just described.
Pressing of the on button 2| after response of relay 5 completes circuit from line L' through the winding ID of the on relay l9 through the contacts 5 and N to line L Relay 10 then responds and through its contacts Ii] completes a circuit shunting the push button switch 22 and causing response of the relay 8,with the results aioredescribed including starting of the small motor. Also upon response of relay 10 its contacts l0 connect across lines L and L the armature a and field winding 1" of the pilot motor PM, whereupon the pilot motor drives the crosshead l upwardly, Such upward movement of the crosshead I if continued by continued depression of button 2| completes an energizing circuit for the large motor relay LMR with consequent energize.- tion of the large motor main switch M8 and provides for deenergization of the small motor relay SMR for disconnection of the small motor, as is well understood. Also as is well understood, further upward movement of the crosshead may be utilized for varying the speed of the now running large motor LM, whereas release of push button 2| deenergizes relay ID to interrupt the circuit of pilot motor PM for arrest of the crosshead in the position to which it has been moved. When the crosshead I in moving upwardly leaves contact 30 the feed to controller C from line L through contacts 8 is interrupted, but meanwhile a feed for said controller from line L has been established to contact 38. This feed extends from line L' to controller contact 38 and segment 39 through parallel connected contacts 40 and 4| of the small motor and large motor relays, respectively. As will be understood, the inch relay 8 drops out upon dropout of the on relay H) but without interference with continued operation of the small motor or the large motor, as the case may be. Also as will be understood, the relay 9 remains energized pending deenergization of relay to open contacts 5 Under running conditions stopping may be effected at any time by pressing the button 20 which establishes a short-circuit for the winding 5 of relay 5. Thereupon relay 5 releases to interrupt connection of the windings of the small and large motor relays to line L and likewise the connection between the winding 9 of relay 9 and line L As continued energization of relay I3 is dependent upon closure of the inch relay 8 and as the latter relay is deenergized upon release of the on relay it will be apparent that the relay l3 may release while either controlled motor is still in operation, and as heretofore pointed out if when relay 5 is deenergized relay l3 has been released reenergization of relay 5 in preparation for restarting will be delayed by the time element of relay l3 incident to response thereof.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a controller for motor driven printing presses and other machines, in combination, manual control means requiring a given operation preparatory to starting and further manual operation to effect starting, a signal device for warning of starting, and means rendering said signal device eifective upon preparatory operation of the first mentioned means, and normally rendering starting by further operation of the first mentioned means subject to a given time delay after initiation of signaling, the second mentioned means comprising a relay which in response to preparatory operation of the first mentioned means moves to a given position subject to a time element affording the aforementioned time delay and which when released has a time element incident to moving out of such given position thereby to enable for a transient period under given conditions restarting by the first mentioned means subject to signaling but quicker than is otherwise possible.
2. In a controller for motor driven printing presses and other machines, in combination, manual control means requiring a given operation preparatory to starting, and further manual operation to effect starting for inching and for running, a signal device for warning of starting, and means rendering said signal device effective upon preparatory operation of the first mentioned means and normally rendering starting for inching or running subject to a given time delay after initiation of signaling, the second mentioned means comprising a relay which in response to preparatory operation of the first mentioned means moves to a given position subject to a time element afiording the aforementioned time delay and which releases upon termination of each inching operation but subject to a time element incident to leaving such given position, thereby to enable for a transient period after each stop in inching restarting by the first mentioned means subject to signaling but quicker than is.

3. In a controller for motor driven printing; presses and other machines, in combination, a.
manual switch requiring operation in prepara-- tion for starting, a manual starting switch to be operated for inching, a signal device for warning of starting, and means rendering said signal device efiective upon operation of the first mentioned switch and normally rendering starting by said starting switch subject to a given time delay after initiation of signaling, the second mentioned means comprising a. relay which in response to operation of the first mentioned switch moves to a given position subject to a time element afiording the aforementioned time delay and which is released upon termination of each inching operation subject to a time element incident to movement away from said given position, thereby to enable for a transient period after each stop in inching restarting by said switches with a reduction in time delay between initiation of signaling and starting.
4. In a controller for motor driven printing presses and other machines, in combination, a manual switch requiring operation preparatory to starting, a manual starting switch to be operated and held for inching, a manual starting switch to be operated for running, a signal device and means rendering said signal device effective upon operation of the first mentioned switch and normally rendering starting by either of said able subject .to a given timeelement upon termi-' nation of each inching operation under control of the second mentioned switch, .the ,last mentioned time element enabling for ,a transient period restarting by the two first ,mentioned switches subject to signaling but ,quicker than is otherwise possible.
5. In a controller for motor driven printing presses and other machines, in combination, a manual starting switch, a manual switch voperable to prepare for starting, asignalldevice for warning of starting, and means rendering said signal .clevice effective upon operation of the second mentioned switch and rendering effectiveness of said starting switch upon each starting operation thereof "dependent upon operation .of the second mentioned switch also, said means including means normally -affordinga given time delay after initiation of signaling before said starting switch becomes effective but affording for atransient period upon termination ofzeach inching operation reduction of such time delay in starting by repeat operation of said switches.
6. In a controller for motor driven printing presses and other machines, in combination, a manual switch requiring operation to preparefor startinga manual startingswitchfor inchinga manualstarting switch for runninga signaldevice for warning of starting, and means rendering said signal device responsive to operationof the first mentioned switch, andrendering effectiveness of each-of said starting switches upon each starting operation thereof ,dependentlupon operation 'of the ,first mentioned switch also, said means including means normally :affording a given time delay before either -.of said starting switches becomes effective following initiation of signaling but affording for-.atransient period upon termination of each inchingoperationlreduction of such time delay for restarting fey r peat operationof the first mentioned switchand operation of eitherof said starting switches.

In a controller for .motor driven printing presses and other machines, in combination, ,a manual switch requiring operation to prepare for starting, .a manual starting'switch, .assignal device for warning of starting, and meansrendering said signal device effective vuponoperation of thefirst mentioned switch ,and rendering effec- ,tivenessof the starting switch upon each start- ,ing operation thereof dependent upon -operatigm of the first mentioned switch also, said means including an electroresponsive relay responsive tosthe first mentioned switch to take a setting to render said starting switch effective, said relay having a time element incident to taking such settingthereby to prevent starting during a given signaling period and having a time element incident to return movement when released thereby to provide a transient period within which restarting ,by repeat operation of said switches may ,be reflected more quickly than otherwise.
8. In a -controller for motor driven printing presses and other machines, .in combination, a signal device for warning of starting, manual means requiring operation to direct starting, and means responsive to said manual means to controlsaid signal device and to effect starting, the second recited means rendering said signal deviceeffectiveupon a given operation of said manual means and normally rendering starting subject to a given timedelay after initiation of sign-aling and said second recited means comprisinga relay which in response to said given operation of said manual means moves to a given position subject to a time element affording the aforementioned time delay and which when released has atime element incident to movement out of suchgiven position thereby to enable for a transient period under given conditions restarting under direction of said manual means subject to signaling but quicker than isotherwise possible.
9.,In a controller for motor driven printing presses andother machines, in combination, a signal device for warning of starting, manual means requiring operation incident to starting and affording selection as between inching and running operations, and means to control said signal device and to effect starting, the last mentioned-means rendering said signal device responsive upon given setting of said manual means andrendering such setting of said manual meansa necessary incident to starting, and said last mentioned means including means normally affording a time delay before effecting starting forinchingor running following initiation of signalingbut affording for a transient period upon termination of each step of inching operation reduction of such time delay for restarting in response to said manual means for either inching or running operations. r
