The speed of the motor is controlled through the medium of resistors which are connected in delta across the secondary terminals 5, 6 and l of the motor 9. In the present instance, the resistor of each branch of the delta comprises three sections. One resistor comprises sections 3!, 32 and 33. another comprising sections 4!, 42 and 43, and the third comprising sections 5i, 52 and 53, the sections 33 and Si being connected together through the winding 28 of relay 2!. The sections 3!, M and 5! may be short clrcuited by normally open contacts itc til and w of providing for short-circuiting of variable portions of said sections by the contacts H W and li respectively, of the torque switch 87.

Response of the switch 8 also closes the contacts 8, thereby establishing for winding 8 a connection from its lower terminal to line L in parallel with the contacts 20 so that the switch 8 remains energizedwhen the relay 20 is de-energized. The motor thus starts to accelerate with part of its secondary resistance short circuited to overcome the friction of rest of the machine. After a given time determined by its time delay device the contacts 8 open thereby de-energizing the winding H whereupon the relay l1 reinserts the resistors aforementioned into the motor circuit. The press will thereupon move at its lowest speed until the inch button is released whereupon the motor is stopped and the controller is restored to the original condition.
If it is desired to operate the press continuously the push button switch ll is depressed. A circuit is also established from Wire 10, through contacts i5, winding 8, contacts 9 contacts 20,

Also upon closure of contacts 15, a temporary circuit is established through contacts t and winding H", to line L so that the torque switch again short circuits the starting or torque resistance as described before. Upon energ'ization of switch 8 and relay I! the contacts and contacts 11*, respectively, are closed, thereby establishing a circuit from line Ill, through push button switch II, to and through winding 2|; contacts l1 and I to line L. The armature energized by the coil 2! is thus lifted to move the lever of relay II to the closed circuit position if it is not already in thatposition. After a certain time during which the motor accelerates, the time delay contacts 8 operi, thereby deenergizing coil i!- which causes opening of the contacts il andde-energization of the winding II of relay II. It will further be observed that upon energizatlon of the switch 8 the winding 2| of relay ii is short circuited so that it has no effect upon the relay 2|.
Ifit is desired to operate the press at a speed above the minimum speed the controller I4 is moved to one of the positions I to 1. Assuming that the controller is moved to position 4, then upon release of the push button H after the second depression thereof a circuit is established from wire 10, through contacts li contact I5 and contact II, to contact ll, through the segments ll, ll, H and H to contact and thence through winding 60' to line I2. Thereupon the switch 6! closes its normally open contacts to short-circuit corresponding sections of the secondary resistance of the motor and to bring it up to a speed corresponding to such resistance commutation. If, on the otherhand, the controller I4 has been moved to any other of its positions the speed of the motor will be different, depending upon the amount of resistance short-circuited.
If the machine is standing still and it is desired to operate it in the reverse direction at slow speed. the push button switch i3 is depressed. thereby energizing again relays it and lland signaling device 23. Upon release of the push button the relay I8 will be de-energized but relay I! will remain energized through its maintaining circuit as described before. Also upon release of the push button II the relay ll will through its normally closed contacts ll", energize relay 20, while relay it remains energized to continue the operation of the signaling device II. Upon the second depression of the push button I! the relay ll is again energized and thereby completes circuit from wire 10 to and through winding 9 and contacts I and li to line L. This energizes reverse switch 9 for reverse drive and switch 9 in responding de-energizes relay I! which in turn de-energizes relay I0. Reverse operation continues only so long as push button I! is held depressed, its release de-energizing switch 9.
When it is desired to stop the press when runing in forward direction the push button switch "I is depressed momentarily. This de-energizes the switches and I and disconnects the motor from the line in the forward direction. Upon reclosure of contacts 8' of switch I, a circuit is established from line L through contacts 2|", which are closed by the prior action of the relay 2!, through energizing coil 16, contacts 8 to line L. The relay It then closes, and, assuming that switch Ill has been reclosed by manual release of its push button, a circuit is established from conductor Ill to and through contact li winding 8, contacts 8* and It", to line U, whereupon the reverse switch 9 is energized to connect the motor to the line for reverse rotation. The high inrush current of the motor produces a strong pull of the winding 2|, opposing the pull oi the winding 2l, which upon closure of the switch I has impressed upon it the full potential between the lines L and L. As the motor slows down and the current in the secondary winding decreases, the pull of the winding 2l overcomes that of the winding 2!, and moves the lever of the relay II to the circuit open position. This de-energizes the relay l6 and the same opens the energizing circuit of the reverse switch 9, thus disconnecting the motor from the line and the motor comes to a standstill.
I claim:
1. In a motor controller, in combination, an electro-responsive motor starting switch, a. manual switch through the medium of which the former switch may be rendered responsive, a signaling device, and means acting upon a given operation 01' said manual switch to render said signaling device responsive and acting upon subsequent given manipulation of said manual switch to effect response of said starting switch, said means being under the control of said electroresponsive starting switch for reset of said means immediately upon response of said starting switch,. to be effective for the aforementioned functions when restarting through the medium of said manual switch is attempted.
2. In a motor controller, in combination, an electroresponsive motor starting switch, a manual switch through the medium of which the former switch may be energized, a signaling device, and means effective upon a given operation of said manual switch to render said signaling device responsive and effective upon subsequent given manipulation of said manual switch to energize said electroresponsive starting switch, said means being under the control a of said starting switch for termination of signaling and for reset of said means immediately upon response of said starting switch, to render said means eifective for the aforementioned functions when restarting through the medium of said manual switch is attempted.
3. Ina motor controller, in combination, an electroresponsive motor starting switch, a manual switch through the medium of which the former switch may be energized, a signaling device, and means effective upon a given operation of said manual switch to render said signaling device responsive and effective upon subsequent given manipulation of said manual switch to energize said electroresponsive switch and to terminate signaling by said device, said means being under the control of said starting switch for reset of said me ns immediately upon response of said start g switch, to render said means effective for the aforementioned functions when restarting through the medium of said manual switch is attempted, and to remove said signaling device from influence by said manual switch while said starting switch is energized.
4. In a motorcontroller, in combination, an electroresponsive motor starting switch, a plurality of manual switches through the medium of any one of which the former switch may be energized, a signaling device and means effective to render said signaling device responsive upon a given operation of any one of said manual switches and effective upon subsequent given manipulation of the same manual switch to energize said electroresponsive starting switch, said means being under the control of said starting switch for reset of said means immediately upon response of said starting switch, thereby to render said means effective for the aforementioned functions when restarting through the medium of any one of said manual switches is attempted.
5. In a motor controller, in combination, an electroresponsive motor starting switch, a plurality of manual switches through the medium of any one of which the former switch may be energized, a signaling device, and means effective to render said signaling device responsive upon a given operation of any one of said manual switches and effective upon subsequent given manipulation of the same manual switch to energize said electroresponsive starting switch, said means being under the control of said starting switch for reset of said means immediately upon energization of said starting switch, thereby to render said means effective for the aforementioned functions when restarting through the medium of any of said manual switches is attempted and to free said signaling device from influence by any of said manual switches whil said starting switch is energized.
6. In a motor controller, in combination, electroresponsive means to start the motor for either forward or reverse operation, manual means through the medium of which the former means may be rendered responsive, a signaling device, and means effective upon operation of said manual means in attempt to effect starting in either direction, to render said signaling device responsive and upon subsequent given manipu lation of said manual means, effective to energize said electroresponsive starting means for motor operation in the selected direction, said starting means being efiective upon response thereof, to reset the third mentioned means to be effective for the aforementioned functioning thereof when restarting through the medium of said manual means is attempted.
7. In a motor controller, in combination, electro-responsive means to start the motor for either forward or reverse operation, manual means through the medium of which the former means may be rendered responsive, a signaling device, and means effective upon operation of said manual means in attempt to effect starting in either direction, to render said signaling device responsive and upon subsequent given manipulation of said manual means effective to energize said electroresponsive starting means for motor operation in the selected direction, said starting means being effective upon response thereof, to reset the third mentioned means to be effective for the aforementioned functioning thereof when restarting through the medium of said manual means is attempted, and the third mentioned means when reset preventing further control of said signaling device by said manual means while said starting means is energized.
8. In a motor controller, in combination, electroresponsive starting switches for forward-and reverse operations respectively, individual manual control switches for said electroresponsive switches, a signaling device and means rendering said signaling device responsive upon .a given initial operation of any of said manual switches and rendering the respective electroresponsive starting switch responsive upon a subsequent given manipulation of the same manual switch, each of said starting switches upon responding effecting immediate reset of said means, thereby to prepare said means for functioning as aforesaid when restarting through the medium of any of said manual switches is attempted.
9. In a motor controller, in combination, electroresponsive motor starting switches for forward and reverse operations respectively, individual manual control switches for said electroresponsive switches, a signaling device and means rendering said signaling device responsive upon a given'initial operation of any of said manual switches, and rendering the respective electroresponsive starting switch responsive upon a sub-.
sequent given manipulation of the same'manual switch, each of said starting switches upon responding effecting immediate reset of said means, thereby to prepare said means for functioning as aforesaid when restarting through the medium of either of said manual switches is attempted, and said means while either of said starting switches is energized freeing said sig-' naling device from influence by any of said manual switches.
10. In a motor controller, in combination, an electroresponsive motor starting switch, a manual switch through the medium of which the former switch may be caused to respond, a signaling device, and means comprising two relays responsive progressively to effect response of said signaling device in response to a given operation of said manual switch, one of said relays releasing in response to another given operation of said switch and the other being selfmaintaining to continue signaling, said means also comprising a third relay energized by the first mentioned relays when the one releases and the other is self-maintained, said third relay when energized rendering another given operation of said manual switch effective to render said electroresponsive starting switch responsive and the latter in responding de-energizing and self-maintained relay to discontinue signaling and also de-energizing said third relay.
11. In a motor controller, in combination, an electroresponsive motor starting switch, a plurality of manual switches through the medium of any one of which response of said starting switch may be efiected, a signaling device, and means comprising two relays responsive progressively to effect response of said signaling device in response to a given operation of any of said manual switches, one of said relaysreieasing in response to another given operation of the same manual switch and the other relay being self-maintaining to continue signaling, said means also comprising a third relay energized by the first mentioned relays when the one releases and the other is self-maintained, said third relay when energized rendering another given operation of said same manual switch effective to energize said starting switch and the latter in responding de-energizing said selfmaintained relay to discontinue signaling and also de-energizing said third relay.
12. In a motor controller, in combination, separate electroresponsive motor switches respectively to afford forward and reverse operations of the motor, manual switches starting his individual to said forward and reverse switches to effect response of the latter selectively, a signaling device, and means comprising two relays responsive sequentially to eflect response of said signaling device in response to a given operation 5 of any of said manual switches, one of said relays releasing in response to another given operation of the same manual switch and the other relay being self-maintaining to continue signaling, said means also comprising a third relay 1o rendered responsive by the first mentioned relays when the one releases and the other is selfmaintained, said third relay'when energized rendering another given operation 01' said same manual switch efiective to cause response of its respective starting switch, and the latter in responding de-energizing said self-maintained relay to discontinue signaling and also de-energizing said third relay.
