invention relates to stove construction and more particularly to seals for use during the charging and operation of such stoves.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a, magazine type stove construction which will prevent the escape of mechanical particles, smoke and other products of combustion from a stove into. the space around such' stove during the charging of fuel into the stove. Another object of this invention is to prevent the accumulation in the. 4fuel magazine, of 'a stove of explosive gases resulting from the leakage of air into the fuel magazine during the normal operation of i the stove. Other objects of this invention include the provision of an automatic damper arrangement which functions both during the charging and normal operation of the stove.
In the operation of stoves, particularly of the type which consists of a fuel magazine wherein the solid fuel is charged and gasifed and a combustion chamber wherein the gasied fuel is burned, there is always the inconvenience 'and nuisance of materials escaping into the space surrounding th'e stove during the charging of the fuel magazine. Furthermore, during the normal operation oi the stove, said leakage of air into the top of the fuel magazine may occur and the amount of this leakage may be s uch thatv when the air is mixed with some of the gasied fuel, an explosive mixture is produced and may be ignited.
The present invention is directed to an automatic vcharging damper for a magazine type stove having a. cover to said magazine, a secondary cover adjacent thereto forming an enclosed space between said covers, and an outlet from said enclosed space communicating with a smoke channel; with an outlet in the top of said magazine communicating with said smoke channel, closures for said outlets, and means associated with said secondary cover and responsive to the position of the latter to vary the position of said closures in relation to their respective outlets.

Fig. 1 is a vertical part-sectional View of one embodiment. of the present invention applied to a heater unit having a fuel magazine and a separate combustion chamber,` and Figs. 2 to 6, inclusive, are. other embodiments thereof in the same type of heater unit.
In Fig. l, a heater unit I, of which only the top section is shown, is composed of magazine3,
into which fuel is charged successively through openings normally closed by top cover 5 and magazine cover 'I. The fuel moves slowly downward in the magazine 3, is gasied in the bottom thereof, and the gasied material burned in comeating between the space above the top of magazine 3 and flue II to remain unobstructed by damper I9. In such normal operation, any Vof the gasied fuel which mi-ght escape through any imperfectly fitting magazine cover 'I is withdrawn through flue I I and thereby prevents the fouling of the atmosphere around heater I. When fuel is to be charged to magazine 3, the covers 5 and 'l are removed successively. The removal of cover 5 causes damper arm I3 to be released to position I3', and counterweight I5 to position I5', opens communication between magazine 3 and flue II by removal of damper I1 to position I'I', and closes communication between the space above magazine 3 and nue II with damper I9 in position I9', thereby withdrawing any gasilied fuel from the top of magazine 3 through ue I I, without fouling the atmosphere around heater I, while fuel is being charged thereto.
In Fig. 2, covers 5 and l are connected by discharge 2|. In normal operation of heater I, hinged damper arm 23, depressed by cover 5, causes counterweighted damper 25 to close the opening communicating between the top of magazine 3 and nue II and causes damper 21 to be restrained from closing the opening communieating between the space above the top of magazine 3 and nue II Likewise, as in Fig. 1, the removal of cover 5 `causes the elements to assume their respective positions 23', 25', and 2l'.
In Fig. 3, hinged damper arm 29, counterweight 3|, damper 33, and damper 35 are shown in normal operating position and in positions 29', 3|', 33 and 35' for charging magazine 3.
In Fig. 4, hinge cover 31 and hinge cover 39 are connected by a loose linka-ge 4I, and a damper 43, forming an integral part of the cover 39. When magazine 3 is to be charged, covers 3l and 39 are raised and assume respective positions 31', 39'.
When magazine 3 isY In Fig. 6, sliding cover 53 and sliding cover 55 are rigidly connected by linkage 51. Hinge damper arm 59 is connected to damper 6I. When magazine 3 is charged, covers 53 and 55 slide on the top of heater I and magazine 3, respectively, and assume positions 53' and 55.'. Also, damperY arm 59, damper BI, and linkage 51 assume respective positions 59', 6 l and'51', wherein the linkage 51vbecomes a damperfor closing the opening communicating between the space above magazine 3 and flue Il.V
chamber, a fuel inlet and cover therefor in said outer shell top above said magazine, and a secondary fuel inlet and cover therefor in said independent top of said magazine below the rst mentioned fuel inlet and cover, wherein the top of said magazine, the top of said shell above said magazine and the portions of said shell adjacent ,thereto form a. zone which is enclosed except for an outlet communicating with said smoke channel with said outlet of configuration such that it may be closed or opened by the operation of a closure associated therewith; an automatic charging damper which comprises an outlet near the top 'of said magazine communicating with said smoke channel, closures for said outlets, and means associatd with said secondary cover and responsive to the position vof the latter to close said magazine It will bev seen from the foregoing description thatV the present invention is directed to thecombination of a coordinated pair of dampers in a magazinetype stove wherein therdamper at the top of the fuel magazine is closed during thenormal operation of the stove, and the damper communicating with the space abovethe fuel magazine is open during such operation. These dampers are so associated with other elements that on the removal of the covers to the stove, the fuel magazine for charging the position of the dampers is automatically reversed. It is generally preferable to have the covers linked together for simplicity of operation. However, in certain instances this is unnecessar y, since each cover may then beremoved separately. In other cases,
such as where the covers are removedfrom theV openings by sliding rather than by raising, the linkage may be rigid. o Y It will 'be seen, therefore, that this invention outletand open the outlet to said enclosed space when said secondary cover is in place and the reverse when said secondary cover is raised.

In a magazine heater comprising an outer shell, a combustion chamber and fuel magazine with an independent top within said shell, a top to said shell, a smoke channel through said outer shell top communicating with said combustion chamber, a fuel inlet and cover therefor in said outer shell top above said magazine, and a secondary fuel inlet and cover therefor in said independent top of said magazine below the first mentioned fuel inlet and cover, wherein the top of said magazine, the top of said shell above said magazine and the portions of said shell adjacent thereto form a zone which is enclosed except for an outlet communicating with said smoke channel with said outlet of configuration such that it may be closed or opened by the operation of a closure associated therewith; an automatic charging damper which comprises an outlet near the top of said magazine communieating with said smoke channel, a linkage between said covers such that said magazine cover is responsive to the movement of said outer shell top cover, and a hinge and closure associated with each cover and so positioned as to close said magazine outlet and open the outlet to said enclosed space when said secondari7 cover is in place and the reverse when said secondary cover is raised.

In a magazine heater comprising an outer shell, a combustion chamber and fuel magazine with an independent top within said shell, a top to said shell, a smoke channel through said outer shell top communicating with said combustion chamber, a fuel inlet and cover therefor in said outer shell top above said magazine, and a secondary fuel inlet and cover therefor in said independent top of said magazine below the first mentioned fuel inlet and cover, wherein the top of said magazine, the top of said shell above said magazine and the portions of said shell adjacent thereto form a zone which is enclosed except for an outlet communicating with said smoke channel with said outlet of conguration such that it may be closed or opened by the operation of a closure associated therewith; an automatic charging damper which comprises a hinged damper arm and a closure to the outlet of said magazine responsive to the movement of the cover of said magazine, and a closure for the outlet of said enclosed zone aixed between said covers, said damper arm and said closure being so positioned as to close said magazine outlet and open the outlet of said enclosed zone when said covers are in place and the reverse when said covers are removed by sliding.
