UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. KOCH, OF BERLIN, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
'REVOLVING CAKE AND FRUIT STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,781, datediJuly 5, 1881.
Application filed June 6, 1881.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN C. Koen, a citizen of the United States, residing in Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Revolving Cake and Fruit Stands, and the following is adescription of the same.
Revolving stands have been Iliade for store show-windows, &c., and these have been constructed with a standard and arms or disks for holding` the goods, which standard has been connected with the actuating clock-work mechanism for imparting rotation to the parts.
My improvement consists in an ornamental revolving` stand for fruit, &c., with two or more dishes or plates, each of which is provided with a central tubular standard, which surrounds a vertical shaft, and this shaft is revolved by clock-work mechanism contained in a casel which forms the base of the stand. I prefer to make this base or case ornamental by placing gures at the corners and by paneling the sides, and I place within this case musical mechanism the same as employed in music-boxes, and the whole is surmounted with a vase for holding iiowers.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my improved fruit-stand. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the case, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of tne fruit-stand complete.
a b c are the dishes or plates. To the center of each dish a tubular standard, d, is securely connected. The same rises above the dish, but does not extend below the same. Hence the dish, when separated from the other parts, may stand on a table, and it may bev iilled with fruit, cake, or other desired articles, and the central tube also becomes a handle by which it may be lifted.
The vertical shaft c has a bearing at j' on the bottom of the case g, and is held and guided by the top of the case and bracket-arm h on the side plate of the actuating mechanism z'. The dishes or plates are placed upon the vertical shaft c successively, the said shaft passing through the central tube or standards, and the tube of one dish supports the next dish above.
The actuating mechanism is provided with a spring barrel-gearing and fly similar to clock- (No model.)
work, and does not require particular description.
The shaft e is driven by the actuating mechanism i through the pinion k and wheel l, and the revolution imparted to it causes the dishes a I) c and their contents to revolve also.
The casey Ihave shown as octagonal in shape, but other shapes may be used; and at m in said case I have shown the barrel with projecting pins that act upon the steel tongues cf the music-box which is introduced into the base and serves to make the ornamental stand more attractive. This music-barrel may be driven by the same spring as the revolving stand, a movable connecting-wheel being employed to slop and start the music without interfering with the revolution of the stand.
I prefer to surmount the shaft c, above the upper dish, with an ornamental vase, p, holding flowers.
I have shown in Fig. 3 the fruit-stand and vase in theI proportions and ornamental form that is preferable for general use.
I claim as my inventionl. The dishes or plates a b c, each formed with a tubular central standard rising above the dish and permanently connected therewith, in combination with the vertical shaft passing through such tubular standards, the hollow base, and the mechanism for revolving the shaft and dishes, as set forth.
2. The dishes a l) c, each having a tubular standard attached to it and rising above it, in combination with the vertical shaft, mechanism for revolving the shaft, a hollow base containing the mechanism, and a vase screwed upon the top of thevertical shaft, as set forth.
3. The ornamental stand having dishes and tubular standards supported upon a revolving shaft, a hollow base with mechanism for revolving the shaft, and a music barrel and tongues within the base, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN O. KOCH.
