WILLIAM FOSTER AND \VILLIAM H. MILLWARD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STEAM-ACTUATED VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,768, dated July 5, 18 81.
Application filed March 2, 1881. (Model.)
manufacture and cheapen the production of steam-pumps by diminishing the number of parts of the valve and its connections.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of our improvement. Fig. 2 shows a part end view and part crosssection upon a larger scale than the previous figure. Fig. 3' shows the valve detached.
Our improvement is made as follows:
Arepresents our improved valve. This valve is of the class known as B-valves, and is compound in its nature and operation, answering the purpose of a main and auxiliary valve. It is seated over the main steam-cylinder O, on the web or casting connecting together the valve-pistons P, and is provided on its base with the vents or openings 0 for opening and closing the main steam-ports 0 of the main steam-cylinder O. The sides of said valve A are cut to form the notches D, which are for the purpose of opening and closing the steamports a, and by their action admit steam to the valve-pistons P. The said valve Ais also provided with L-shaped slots H, for the purpose of alternately exhausting steam from the valve-pistons P through the steam -ports a. The steam-chest K, in which the valve A is placed and operates, is bored out so as to receive the valve A and valve-pistons P.
Secured to one of the valve-pistons P, and on a plane with the said valve-pistons and valve A, is the longitudinal rod d. On this rod 41 are adjusted at suitable distances the dogs 0, with beveled or inclined faces. Between these dogs 0, and sliding freely on the rod d, is the vertical arm a, which is connected with the piston-rod f of the main piston gin such manner that the motion of said rod f is communicated to the vertical arm a, and the arm 6 is caused to slide back and forth on the rod d with the motion of said rod f and engage alternately with the dogs 0, and by this engagement of the inclined faces of the dogs 0 with the vertical arm e asidewise oscillating movement is given to the rod d and to thevalve A, and this oscillating motion of the valve A alternately opens and closes the notches D and slots H with which the valve is provided, thus alternately admitting and exhausting steam from thevalve-pistons P through the ports a. The valve A is also, by the longitudinal motion of the arm at communicated from arm 6, carried back and forth lengthwise over the main steam-cylinder 0, thus alternately opening and closing the steam-ports o of the main steam-cylinder by the vents or openings G, and admitting and exhausting steam from the main piston g.
' The operation of our improvement is as follows Steam being turned on, the main pistonrod commences its forward stroke, and its motion is communicated to the vertical arm 6, which moves forward on the rod (1 until it engages with one of the dogs 0 adjusted on said rod (1. This engagement of the arm 0 with the inclined faces of the dog 0 imparts a sidewise oscillating movement to the rod d and valve A. This oscillating movement of the valve A opens one of they notches D cut in the side of the valve and admits steam through one of the ports a to one of the valve-pistons P. At the same time this oscillating movement of valve A opens the slot H opposite the opened notch D and exhausts steam through the alternate port a from the other piston P. The steam thus admitted to one of the pistons P while the steam is exhausted from the other piston P carries the valve A lengthwise over the main steam-cylinder, and by means of the vents O steam is admitted through one of the main steam-ports o and exhausted through the other. When the main piston-rod has completed its stroke it moves backward and carries with it the arm 0, which,in turn, strikes against the other dog 0 on rod 01 and gives a reverse oscillation and backward motion to the valve A, closing and opening the alternate ports a to give and exhaust steam from the pistons I.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The valve A, provided with the notches D and slots H, in combination with the pistons P P and the ports a a, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The valve A, provided with the openings 0, notches D, and slots H, in combination with the ports a a and ports 0 0, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a direct-acting steam-pump, thevalve A, provided with the openings 0, notches D,
and slots H, in combination with rod (1, pistons P, ports a a, and ports 0 o, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a direct-acting steam-pump, the valve 20 A, provided with pistons P, openings O,notches D, and slots H, the rod d, and the adjustable dogs 0, in combination with the rod 0, valveports a, and main ports 0 0, substantially and for the purpose set forth. 2 5 In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 24th day-of February, 1881.
