ATTACHMENT PLUG AND FUSE Johan R. S. Arentz, Chicago, Ill. Application January 15, 1946, serial No. 641,290
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements and structural reiinements in electric attachment plugs, such as are commonly employed in association with extension cords for connecting radios, oor lamps and other electrical appliances to an outlet receptacle.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device oi the character herein described, in which a fuse is incorporated into the body of the plug in order to independently protect the circuit to which the plug is attached.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment plug which, by incorporating a separate fuse into each individual circuit, will afford a more accurate selection of the strength of such fuse than has been heretofore possible where several circuits Were connected in one common fuse block.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination plug and fuse which will localize shorted circuitsv and the like such as may develop in the appliance to which it is connected, and thereby facilitate continued operation of other appliances which may be in good working order.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a combination plug and fuse in which the rupture of the fuse will afford an immediate indication of the circuit or appliance which has become damaged.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination plug and fuse in which the fuse portion is easily accessible for inspection or replacement.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a combination plug and fuse which is simple in construction, safe in operation, and in which the fuse can be economically replaced.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as maybecome apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central, cross-sectional, elevational view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof, partially broken away to reveal its construction,
Figure 3 is an underside plan view of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure l,
Figure 6 is a central, cross-sectional, elevational view of the plug housing, and
Figure 'I is a side elevation of the fuse, per se.
(Cl. 20D-115.5)
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of an inverted, bell shaped housing l provided with an internally threaded portion 2 at the lower, open end thereof and having wire inlet aperture 3 formed in its upper, closed end.
A removable cover 4, provided with an externally threaded adapter 5 is screwed into the portion 2, and the cover is also formed with a pair of parallel slots 6 designed to receive a pair of protruding prongs l. The inner ends 8 of the latter are angulated to lie at in countersunk recesses 8' formed in the inner side of the cover 4, to which they are secured by means of the rivets 9, the latter also being suitably countersunk into the outer surface of the cover. Each of the rivets 9 is used also to secure a cup-shaped spring clip I Il to each of the ends 8, said spring clips assuming the form of a fuse holder into which a cartridge fuse may be laterally inserted or withdrawn.
Positioned inside the housing l and integral with the cover 4 is a mounting block i i the same having a T-shaped cross-sectional conguration and consisting of a central web l2 surmounted by circular disc I3. A pair of diametrically opposed terminals I4, provided With suitable wire attaching screws I5, are secured by means of the rivets I6 to the top of the ldisc i3. The same rivets are also employed for securing a further pair of fuse holders I'I, similar to the aforementioned holders I0, to the underside of the disc i3, each of the terminals I4 being in electrical connection with one of the holders ill.
Each of the holders it is in vertical alignment with one of the holders il and a conventional cartridge iuse i8 is inserted into each pair of the vertically aligned holders, as will be clearly apparent from the accompanying drawings.
When the invention is placed in operation, the fuses I8 are readily accessible by unscrewing the cover 4 from housing l, whereupon they may be inspected or conveniently removed from the holders I0 and Il.
While in the foregoing there has been shown.
and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor,y
changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention es claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
A fused attachment plug comprising in combination, a bell shaped housing formed with a wire inlet aperture in the closed end thereof, a disklike cover removably positioned in the open end of said housing, a pair of outwardly projecting prongs secured to said cover, a mounting block formed integrally with said cover and disposed in said housing, said block comprising a diametrically extending web and a substantially circular plate carried by said web, pairs of fuse holders provided at the opposing sides of said cover and said plate, said prongs being in circuit with the fuse holders on said cover, a pair of flat connector pieces provided on the remaining side of 15 said plate, rivets extending through said plate and electrically connecting each ofthe fuse ho1d- -4 ers thereon to one of said connector pieces, a terminal screw provided on each of said pieces, and a. pair of cartridge fuses positioned in said holders.
