Patented Mar. 2, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT I 2,436,856
ADJUSTABLE HOSE DRIER George .T. Dale, Sea Cliff, N. Y.
Application May 16, 1946, Serial No, "670303 M invention relate to improvements in hose -driers andmore particularly-to ahose drier that maybe adjusted to accommodate avariety of sizes of hose.
- An object of my invention is to provide anadjustable hose drier that will positively maintain the size for whichit is set. Another object is to provide an adjustable drier that is simple to op- =erate and inwhich the mechanism for adjusting the drier to a desired size will not interfere with 'placing the hose onor removing the hose from the drier. Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparentfrom the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig, l'is-a front view of a drier embodying my invention;
omitted;
Fig. .5 is a section .view takenalongthe line Fig. 6 is a section view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is a frame I0 conforming generally to the size and shape of a given type of hose; for example, a man's sock. The frame Ill is preferably made of wire which is bent to the desired shape. The wire is of sufficient size so that the frame will not collapse. The wire may be of stainless steel or other metal that will not corrode or rust or it may be treated or plated to resist corrosion and rusting.
The frame may be provided with a centrally located strut or brace II that extends parallel to the sides of the frame from the toe to the upper portion thereof. A heel portion I2 is slidably mounted on the frame I0 and has a pair of guide arms l3 and I4 that extend to the cenral brace l I and engage slidably therewith. The heel portion may be formed of wire similar to the frame. The wire forming the heel may be looped about the frame and the central strut in a manner that will permit sliding movement of the heel portion l2 relative to the frame In and the central brace H Thus, the heel portion l2 may be moved along the frame In to the proper position for the ize of hose to be dried. To facilitate this adjustment, size markings may be provided on the frame I. In
the illustrated embodiment, the size markings/on the frame are arranged to beused asa settingfor th r uidear HLofthe heel portiontosecure the desired size.
- Theguide-arm J4 alsocarriesalooking device which prevents movement of ;the.heel portion after 'it has been positioned at :the desired size. The locking device consists. of, a coiled member! 5' formedfroma wire l5.-of. spring .steel. The-coils of th .wire.l5 are-wrapt. around the central brace ll, andthe ends of the wire l5.extend-.f-rom the coil. One end ofithe wireiisheld to the guidearm' 1.4 by being looped. around the-arm andbya band [6. The other. end of the .wire a I 5. is-zfree, and. has a hookedend :IJ that may belatchedoverthe guide arm l4. This-endotthewiredi is also bent to provide .a trigger .I 8:for.. operatingzthe :latching mechanism. The trigger I 8 .isrformed so that it liesin the same iplaneas theframeof the drier .and when it is in :locked position, the -hose..wi1l
pass over the entire mechanism =without interference.
The coiled portion of the wire I 5 whichiswrapt around the-centralbrace ll isarranged so that when. the hooked end H. of; the wire; [5 is latched over .the guide .arm 4-4, the. coilseare drawn into firmengagementwith the central brace ll, thus preventingmovement of: the heelportionrelative to the frame. This holds the heel portion I2 positivelyat the desired size so that it will resist any force tending to move it such as may be exerted by the hose in drying. Woolen hose, for example, may exert considerable force in this respect, and any movement of the heel under such circumstances would make the drier ineffective for the important function of sizing the hose.
When the latch I1 is released, the coils of the wire l5 around the central brace H are permitted to expand circumferentially so that they will slide along the brace H so as not to interfere with movement of the heel portion I2 to the desired SlZe.
While a preferred embodiment of my invention has been described and illustrated herein, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a hose drier of the class described, a frame conforming generally in shape and size to a given type of hose, a central brace located between the outer members of said frame, a heel portion slidably mounted on the frame, said heel portion having a pair of arms extending to and slidably engaging with said central brace and a locking device carried by one of said arms and engaging with said central brace for securing said heel portion positively at a predetermined position on said-frame.
2. A hose drier of the class described compris-,
and slidably engaging with said brace, and a locking device carried by said guide arm and engaging with said brace to lock saidheel portion in place at a predetermined position on said frame. 3. In a hose drier as set forth in elaim 2, a
locking device consisting of a resilient coiled member carried by said guide arm and surrounding brace, said coiled member having one end securedxto. the guide arm andits-other endmmovable tov bring. said, coiled ;member intoigripping engagement with said brace, said movable end being engageable with a rigid member-pf the drier to maintain'saidvcoiled member in said gripping position. 3 v .r i
'4. A hose drier of the class described comprising a frame, an adjustable heel. portionslidably mounted on said frame, aguide arm carried by said heel portion and extending at least partially across said frame, said guide arm slidably engaging with an oppositely disposed portionof said frame, a resilient coiled member carried by said guide arm and surrounding a portion of said frame, one end of said coiled member being secured to said heel portion and its "other end being movable to bring 'said coiled member into gripping engagement with said frame, and a latch on said movable end engaging with said'guide arm'to maintain said coiled member in gripping engagement with said frame and thereby lock said heel portion in a predetermined position on said-frame.
5'. "A hose drier of the class described 'comprising a frame, an adjustable heel portion slidably mounted'on said frame, a guide'arm carried by said heel-portion and extending at leastpartially I across said :frame; saidguide arm slidably '45 number engaging with an oppositely disposed portion of .said frame, a resilient coiled member carried by said guide arm and surrounding a portion of said frame, one end of said coiled member being 5 secured to said heel portion and its other end being movable to bring said coiled member into gripping engagement with said frame, said movable end being engageable with a rigid member of the drier to maintain said coiled member in gr pp position. v .1 3
6. In a hose drier of "the class-described having a frame and an adjustable heel portion slid- -ably mounted on said frame, a locking device I for securing said heel portion in a predetermined position on said frame comprising a resilient coiled m'ember carried by said heel portion and surroundinga portion of said frame, said coiled member having'one end secured to said heel portion and its other end being movable to bring said coiled member into gripping engagement withrsaid' frame -and alatch carried by said movable -e nd engageable with said heel portion to maintain saidcoiled member in;gripping--engagement with said frame. I
'7. In a hose drier of the class described having a frame and. an adjustable heel portion slidably mounted onsaid frame; a locking device for securing said heel portion in a; predetermined position on said frame comprising a resilient coiled fmember carriedjby said-heel portion and surrounding agportion of said-frame, said coiled member having one end secured to said heel portion-and its other; end being movable to bring said coiled member into gripping engagement 5 with said frame, said movable end being engageable witha rigid member of the drier to secure said coil in gripping engagement with said frame.
