I SPRING WINDING DEVICE Filed Jan. 7, 1946 I INVENTOR. WiltqrdAltenbu g ATTCI RN EYS Patented Feb. 24, 1948 UNITED STATES PTNT OFFICE 2,436,707 SPRING wmmNG DEVICE Wilford Altenburg, San Francisco, Calif.
Application January 7, 1946, Serial No. 639,620
1 Claim. (CI. 57-10) This invention relates to a spring winding device ior tow cables.
An object of the invention is to eliminate the chafing of a tow rope or wire, which rides over a roller on the bulwark of a ships stern by covering the tow rope or wire at the portion subject to such wear with a heavy steel coiled wire spring.
The spring will act as a protector to the tow rope or wire and at the same time will allow the towing wire to bend in any direction.
If the wire spring should wear out, it can be easily and quickly removed and a new one installed by the use of the present device.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tow rope connected to the stern of a ship.
Figure 2 is a rear view of an embodiment of the invention in operative position, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Rererring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral It indicates the stern of a ship, having a bulwark l2 on which is mounted horizontal tow rope guide rollers It, on the deck 18 are also positioned vertical guide rollers 20.
A tow rope or wire 22 passes through the aforesaid rollers over the deck l8 and to a towing reel not shown.
The spring winding device comprises a handle 24 having a semi-circular hooked end 26.
The handle 24 is provided with an elongated vertical slot 28 which is adapted to receive bolts 30 which are positioned in openings in the clamp 32.
The clamp 32 has a straight short portion 34 and a semi-circular curved portion 36 which is curved reversely to the hooked end 26 of the handle 24.
The tow rope or wire 22 is adapted to be placed between the hooked end 26 of the handle 24 and the curved portion 36 of the clamp 32 and when the nuts 38 on the bolts 30 are tightened, the tow rope or wire is rotatably retained therein.
The handle 24 at its extreme lowermost point is provided with an apertured car 40 through which the spring 42 is guided and wrapped around the tow rope or wire 22.
The method of winding a coiled spring on the tow rope or wire is as follows:
A cable clamp 44 is positioned on the tow rope or wire 22 .toward the towing reel and secured in position by means of a set screw 46.
One end of the spring 42 is drawn through the apertured ear 40 and secured to the tow rope or wire 22 by the cable clamp 44.
The clamp 32 and handle 24 are placed on the tow rope or wire 22 and the clamp 32 is adjusted and set to a loose fit around the tow rope or wire 22.
The handle 24 is then turned around the tow rope or wire in the direction that the spring 42 is wound until the spring 42 is completely placed on the tow rope or wire 22.
The handle 24 and clamp 32 can then be removed or remain on the tow rope or'wire 22 as desired.
The spring 42 can be removed from the tow rope or wire 22 in the same manner except that the removal is started at the after end of the spring.
It is obvious that numerous changes might be made in the details of the construction and arrangement of parts of the device and it is desired to cover the present application and any patent resulting therefrom the modifications in structure, material or employment of mechanical equivalents which may be within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Let- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
