AUTOMAT I C C IGARETTE HOLDER Filed Oct. '21, 1946 6 Inventor 5 WLmPp P SlNCL/9/K Patented Feb. 24, 1948 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved cigarette holder having an axially disposed smoke passage and an enlarged socket formed in the outer end of said holder in which the end of a cigarette may be inserted, together with means on said holder for engaging and clamping the end of the cigarette when in the holder to positively retain and clamp the same therein.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved cigarette holder having, an axially disposed smoke passage and an enlarged socket formed in the outer end of said holder being radially slotted throughout its length, and a pivoted clamping jaw supported in said slot for positively engaging and clamping the end of a cigarette when inserted in said socket.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved cigarette holder having an axially disposed smoke passage formed longitudinally throughout its length and an enlarged socket formed in the outer end of said holder being formed with a radially extending slot having oppositely and outwardly flared or tapered side walls, together with a pivoted cigarette clamping and holding jaw mounted upon a pivot pin disposed transversely of said slot, and resilient means for engaging the inner end of said clamping jaw to exert a resilient tension or pressure upon a cigarette when placed in the socket of said holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cigarette holder with means for automatically clamping and securing the inner end of a cigarette when inserted in said holder, the same being efficient in operation and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved cigarette holder;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the cigarette holder being taken at an angle of 90 from the Figure 5 is a side elevation of the outer end of the cigarette holder, being partly broken away and in vertical section to show the shape of the radially extending cigarette and clamping jaw receiving slots formed in said holder.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a cigarette holder formed with an elongated body I being tapered as at 2 adjacent its inner end and terminating in the usual bit or mouth engaging portion 3.
The body I is formed with an axially disposed longitudinally extending smoke passage 4 throughout its length, and an enlarged cigarette supporting socket 5 is formed in its outer end, the same being radially slotted to provide the oppositely disposed flared side walls or seats 6 and I.
A longitudinal slot 8. of reduced width is formed as a continuation of the radial slot in the socket 5 and extends inwardly to a point spaced from the smoke passage 5, the same providing a support for the pivot pin 9 disposed transversely thereof upon which the cigarette engaging and clamping jaw generally denoted by the reference numeral I0 is pivoted.
The pivoted clamping jaw comprises a wedge shape body portion ll having opposed inwardly tapering sides [2 and I3 adapted to seat on the flared side Walls or seats 6 and l in the radial slot of the cigarette supporting socket 5. The inner clamping surface I 4 of the body portion II is arcuate in shape, being of a greater curvature than that of the curvature of the socket 5, forming an imperfect circle when. in depressed position to provide a pinching acticn upon a cigarette (not shown) when inserted in said socket 5. A rearwardly extending ofiset finger engaging operating handle portion I5 is integrally formed with the body portion H of the clamping jaw 15, and is received in the slot 8, the same supporting one end of a coil tensioning spring I 6 disposed beneath said handle portion l5 with its opposite end seating on or engaging th bottom of said slot 8, whereby a resilient pressure or tension will be exerted upon the clamping jaw to positively engage a cigarette (not shown) when inserted in said socket 5.
An air tight joint will be effected about the inner end of the cigarette when in said socket 5 to provide for the proper smoking of the cigarette, and when the same has been smoked down to butt or stub length, a slight pressure inwardly on the upper surface of the handle portion [5 will raise the body portion H of the clamping jaw Hi to release the butt or stub which may then be readily shaken from the'holder.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that a highly efiicient form of cigarette holder will have been devised and provided.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A cigarette holder comprising an elongated body being formed with an axial longitudinally extending smoke passage and a bit on its inner end, the outer end of said holder being formed with a cigarette supporting socket being radially slotted to provide opposed outwardly flared side walls or seats, a pivoted wedge shaped cigarette clamping and securing jaw member pivotally supported in said slot and having the cigarette engaging portion thereof formed with a less curvature than the curvature of said socket whereby a pinching action will be had on a cigarette when inserted in said socket.
2. The subject matter claimed in claim 1, said body being also provided with a slot of less width than the slot in the socket and formed as a continuation of the socket in the outer end of the body, and a cigarette clamping and securing jaw pivotally supported in said reduced slot.
3. The subject matter as claimed in claim 1, said body being also provided with a slot of less width than the slot in the socket and formed as a continuation of said socket, said cigarette clamping and securing jaw pivotally supported in said reduced slot having an ofiset handle portion formed on the inner end thereof, and a coil tensioning spring disposed in said slot in contact with the under-surface of said handle portion and with the bottom of said slot for automatically placing a resilient tension upon the clamping jaw and upon a cigarette when in said socket, the
same being releasable when smoked down to butt The following references. are of record in the file of this. patent:
