Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a supporting frame mounted on rollers B by means of which the machine may be moved into a desired position relative to the window to be cleaned. The shaft 34 is operated by means of a beveled gear 35 at one end thereof through a similar gear 36 secured on the outer end of an extensible shaft 31 which extends longitudinally at one side of the chassis 8. The other end of the shaft 31 extends into a gear housing 38 carried at the inner end of the chassis 8 and is reversibly operated through gears 39 and 40 freely journaled on the shaft, the gears 39 and 40 including clutch heads 4I and 42 engageable in sockets 43 and 44 at the opposite ends of a clutch collar 45 slidably keyed on the shaft 3:1 and operated by means of a yoke 48 for selectively engaging the clutch collar with the gears 39 and 48.
The gear 39 is operated through gears 41 and 48 on a countershaft 49, the gear 48 being engaged at one side of a ring gear 50 while the gear 4U is operated through gears 5| and 52, the gear 52 being engaged with the ring gear 59 at a side thereof diametrically opposite from the gear 48, as shown to advantage in Figure 7 of the drawings. v
The ring gear 59 is secured `to-'a shaft 53 extending transversely of the machine at the inner end of the chassis 8 and is driven by a belt 54 and pulley 55 from an electric motorV 56. i
The yoke 46 for slidably actuating'the' clutch collar 45 is formed on one end of a'n arm 51 which projects radially from a pin 58Vjournaled in the top of the gear housing 38'. To the outer end of the pin 58 is secured an arm 58 having its outer end provided with a knob or handle 60 for swinging in an arc as shown by the arrow in Figure 6 of the drawings to thereby move the clutch collar 45,into its opposite positions for selectively engaging the gears 39 and 40 With the shaft 31. A spring pressed detent 6| is carried by the handle 69 for engaging in recesses 62 formed in the top of the gear housing 38 to secure the clutch collar 45 in either a neutral position, or in either of its oppositely engagedpositions. A z lA screw 62 also extends transversely of the outer end of the frame I8 and is threaded in a bracket 63 formed as a part of the carrier 2'0. A beveled gear 64 is secured to one end of the screw 62 and is operated through a similar gear 65'secured to the outer end of'an extensible shaft 66 extending longitudinally of the chassis 8 at a side thereof opposite from the shaft 31. The shaft 68 is operated by the shaft 53 through a clutch controlled mechanism similar to that heretofore describedV for operating the shaft 31, the clutch controlled mechanism for the shaft 66 being mounted in a gear housing 61 and controlled through the handle, 68.
The legs I1 ofthe frame I8 are connected near their inner ends by la cross member 69 through which a screw 18 is threaded, the screw extending longitudinally of .the frame |8. The screw is operated by means of a clutch mechanism similar to that provided for the shafts 31 and 66 and contained Within the gear housing 1|. The clutch mechanism for the screw- 10 .is controlled by the handle 12. 1
Should a source of current be unavailable for the electric motor 56 the shaft 53 for operating the several parts of the machine may be operated through a manual crank or handle 13.
In the operation of the device it is moved into a desired position adjacent the window to be cleaned and the brush 3| secured in the clamp au at the upper portion of the arm 2t or 21. depending on whether the inside or the outside of the window is to be cleaned. The handle 12 for the clutch mechanism controlling the screw 1 6 is then moved into the desired position for operating the screw 18 to move the frame I8 outwardly of the chassis 8 so that the brush 3| may be brought into contact with the window, the length of movement, of course, being sufficient to place the brush in position for cleaning the inside or outside of the window, and, obviously. to position the device for outside cleaning the Window must be accordingly raised and again lowered for the purpose if the device is located inside the room.
' The clutch handles 60 and 68 are then moved into position for operating the shafts 31 and 66 so that the brush may be moved vertically by means of the screw 22, or may be moved horizontally by means of the screw 82.
The chassis 8 and the frame |8 carrying the brush support may be adjusted vertically through the manipulation of the handle I5 for operating the screws 1 through the sprocket I3, chain |2 and sprockets 9.
It is believed the details of constructionl operation and advantages vof the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A window cleaning apparatus comprising a portable base element to be placed in working proximity to a Window, a horizontally extensible frame on said base element, means for selectively raising and lowering said frame, means including operating and control means mounted on said frame, including means for extending and retracting the extensible frame, a vertically movable cleaner support mounted to be transversely movable on the outer end portion of the extensible frame, said cleaner support carrying a cleaner element thereon, means for selectively raising and lowering said cleaner support including control means mounted on the frame, and means for selectively moving said support transversely of the frame in either direction including control means mounted. on the frame.
