9 Claims. (Cl. 125-39) This invention relates to a diamond wheel dressing tool.

An object of the invention resides in the provision of such a tool that is constructed to include a means for roughing and dressing a grinding wheel.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a tool that combines means for accomplishing face and radius dressing as well as roughing in a combined structure.

It is a further object of the invention to so construct the tool that it can be selectively converted into a face dresser, radius dresser or rougher without removal from the dressing machine. I

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of means for maintaining the face and radius dressing portion in various angular positions in respect of the shank of the tool and for acting as a roughing tool and a protector of the face and radius dressing diamond.

With these and other objects in View, such as will appear as the dscription progresses, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and recited in the claims.

In the form of the invention illustrated in the several figures of the drawing, the tool includes a shank I which is, preferably, circular in cross section and which is provided at one of its ends with spaced ears 2 which form a slot 3 there between. The shank is also provided with a cut 4 that extends from the slot 3 to facilitate the drawing together of the ears 2 in a manner later to be described.

A head 5 that is also, preferably, of circular cross section and which carries a diamond point 6, is provided with a tongue 1 that is located in the slot 3 between the ears 2 of the shank. A

longitudinally extending recess 8 is formed in said tongue I and. a screw 9 which extends through the ears 2 and is in screw threaded engagement with one passes through said slot 8.

Thus, when the head 5 is aligned with the shank I and the shoulder I0 engages the ends of the ears 2, the screw 9 may be tightened to draw the ears together and secure the head in its aligned position. .A collar II is slidably mounted on the shank I and head 5 so that it may be moved to the various positions illustrated in the drawing, and this collar is provided with set screws I2 that are adapted to be adjusted to engage the shank or the head 5 to maintain the collar in its various positions of adjustment.

Thus when the head 5 is swung to the right angular position illustrated in Figure 2 for side or radius dressing the collar II may be moved on the shank I to engage the head on both sides of the longitudinal axis of the shank and secured in this position by the set screws I2. When thus secured to the shank, the collar will maintain the head in its right angular relationship.

In order that the diamond carrying head may be set at various angles for facing or radius dressing, one face of the collar I I is provided with a plurality of notches I3 that have faces I4 extending at various angles torthe longitudinal axis of the shank and the angularities of these notches are indicated by indices I5 on the adjacent face of the collar II. These notches are arranged to selectively receive the tongue I of the head 5 in such manner that one edge of the tongue contacts the face I4. The angularity of the head 5 is thus determined.

When the head is in any of its angular adjusted positions with the tongue in one of the notches, the collar Il may be secured to the shank I by .the setscrews l2 and will maintain the adjustment of the head.

In order that the collar II may be used to rough the grinding wheel and at the same time protect the diamond on the head 5, the collar is made removable and reversible and the face opposite to that in which the notches I3 are formed is set with diamonds I6.

Thus the collar Il may be loosened on the shank and removed over the head when the head is in alignment with the shank. It may then be reversed and replaced in the position shown in Figure 4. In this position the diamond impregnated face of the collar will be free for use in roughing and the collar will encompass the end of the head 5 with the diamond on the latter located within the recess of the collar and thus protected.

It will be observed that, when the tool is held in a chuck of the machine with which such a tool is used, the collar may be freely adjusted on or removed from the shank without remov- 3 ing the tool from the chuck. Thus the head may be adjusted into any of its various dressing positions and the collar. may be'removed andreversed'for roughing without removing the tool from the chuck.

While a particular form of the invention has been disclosed, this is for illustrative purposes and the invention is not to be limited to the particular embodiment disclosed except insofar as a limitation is made necessary by the claims.

What is claimed is:

In a wheel dressing tool,;a shank a head mounted on said shank and pivotally and slidably adjustable thereon to various positions in which its longitudinal axis will lie in various angular positions in respect ofthe longitudinal axis of the shank, a cuttera carried byone end of said head, and a collar slidably mounted on said shank and constructed and arranged to be movedinto engagement with said head to maintain said head in its various adjusted positions. l a i :2.
