c. R. JEFILREYS SAFETY SHIELD Filed Nov. 17, 1937 4 17206 911021 (I /1481.55 E. J FEEKi Patented July 4, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT em SAFETY SHIELD Charles R. Jeifreys, McKeesport, Pa,

Application November 1'7, 1937, Serial No. 175,131

1 Claim.

This invention relates to safety shields, and more particularly to one which is adapted for use on a grinding-wheel or similar device, although not limited thereto.

5 In using grinding-wheeZs and the like, considerable danger to the operator is occasioned by flying sparks, metal, and abrasive particles. A

of existing design, and one which afiords complete protection to the workman from all possible working angles.

The foregoing and other objects will be appar-. 20 ent after referring to the drawing in which:

Figure 1 is an end elevation of the device of the invention as applied to a rotary grinding-wheel, and illustrates in dotted lines a number of positions it may occupy. 25 Figure 2 is-a perspective.

Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line IIIIII of Figure 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a prime mover having a 30 driving-shaft 3 on which there is mounted a conventional rotary grinding-wheel 4. A suitably mounted band 5 is disposed to extend for a limited distance around the upper portion of the periphery of the rotary grinding-wheel 4. This 35 band 5 carries a stud 6 which is held against rotation by means of a nut I. The stud 6 carries a clamp 9 having a cylindrical aperture l formed between a pair of legs l2 which are adjusted with respect to each other by means of a conventional 49 clamping-screw l4. An elongated shaft I is disposed to extend through the cylindrical aperture in in the clamp 9 and is made relatively adjustable with respect thereto, due to the operation of the clamping-screw ll. The elongated shaft is of such length as to enable one of its ends to project outwardly from the adjacent portions of the rotary grinding-wheel 4 and the handring 5. This end of the elongated shaft 15 is provided with a transverse aperture II. The

elongatedshaft l5 carries a slidable clampingblock I8 having a semi-cylindrical recess I9 which conforms to a portion of the contour of the transverse aperture The carrier-rod of the shield per se is disposed to extend through the 5 transverse aperture I! in the elongated shaft l5 and the slidable clamping-block I8 is held tightly against it by means of a nut 22 which is threaded onto the shaft I5. v

The shield per se is shownas comprising a 10 rectangular wire loop 25 having a flat centralportion 26 and a pair of divergent end-portions 2'! which are directed toward the grinding-wheel 4. The carrier-rod 20 of the shield comprises a central-portion 29 which extends through the 15 transverse aperture in the elongated shaft I 5 and a pair of right-angular leg portions 30. These leg portions 3licross and are welded to the ends of the flat central-portion 26 of the shield, thus making three sections of the latter which are 20 provided with safety glass.

While I have shown one specific embodiment of the present invention, it will be seen that I do not wish to be limited exactly thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the following claim.

I claim:

A safety shield for abrading or cutting tools 30 and the like comprising a wire U-shaped memher having its leg portions extending toward'the station of the operator, a wire elongated loop member, said wire elongated loop member having a central substantially fiat portion which is welded to and extends across the leg portions of said wire U-shaped member, the ends of said wire elongated loop member being extended out of the plane ofsaid substantially fiat central portion and toward the work, transparent window material disposed in and framed by the flat central portion and the extended end portions of said wire elongated loop member, and a rod disposed over the work and extending toward the station of the operator, said rod being connected to the base portion of said wire U-shaped member and constructed and arranged to permit the rotative adjustment of the latter.

CHARLES R. JEFFREY 8.
