Description

Feb. 3, 1948; w. T. PEARSON GYRO TOP Filed Nov. 1, 1945 Patented Feb. 3, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. (01. 46-70) My invention as described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, consists of a toy top, an object of which is to provide a top so formed that it may be used in numerous ways.
Another object of my invention is to provide a disk top mounted upon a loose spindle upon which a cord is'wound to spin the top.
A further object of this invention is to provide a top formed of a pair oi disks fixedly mounted and spaced apart upon a common hub rotatable upon a spindle upon either end of which the top may spin.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
t Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
While one embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that it is merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in con struction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of my device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claim. And while I have stated the primary field of utility of my invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
' In the accompanying drawings and in the following specification, the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout and in which I refers to my invention and N indicates a spindle which is projected loosely through an enlarged bore l2 through a hub M of a wheel l5 comprising a pair of spaced disks l6 and [1, said disks and hub being integral. Mounted on the ends [8 and [9 of the spindle H and fixed thereto are tubes 20 and 21 of substantially the length of the said ends l8 and I9. The outer terminals 22 and 23 of the members is and 2| are turned to a cone 24, while the similar ends 25 and 25 of the members i8 and 20 are formed arcuate. There is a certain play or clearance space such as 21 between the terminals 28 and 29 of the members 20 and 2| and the walls 30 and 3! of the hub i4.
Due to the play of the shaft within the said hub l4 both laterally and longitudinally when the cord 32 is wound upon the hub between said disks and drawn rapidly off to rotate the wheel, the top when dropped upon either end 28 or 24 will spin with an irregular bouncing and gyrating movement. When the device is spinning on the cone 24, the top will spin much smoother than when on the end 26.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
In a top, the combination of a spindle having dissimilar shaped floor engaging ends, tubes fixed to the opposite ends of said spindle, and having their outer ends forming continuations of the spindle ends, an integrally formed hub and spaced parallel wheel discs loosely mounted on said spindle for axial and lateral movement with respect thereto, and said hub being adapted to receive and support a winding cord.
T. PEARSON.
