An object of this invention is to provide a clamping bow type earring having non-swivelling clamping plates which are integral with the arms of the bow to press the ear lobe from opposite sides and with a diminishing pressure radiating from a point of contact.
Another object of this invention is to provide a clamping type earring having clamping plates that are integral with housings forming portions of the bow elements, the structure being such that the clamping plates are movable slightly with respect to the housings, each plate having an element of resiliency.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bifurcated toggle-link pivotally mounted on a pivot in the stationary bow element, the toggle element having a pin transversely thereof and adapted to enter a receiving means in the lower portion of the movable bow element for locking the bow elements in ear engaging position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which form part of thi specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the earring in operative position on an ear lobe, the section being taken as on line l-l in Figure 3, the view being on an enlarged scale.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional View of the earring in open position, similar to that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a fragmentary portion of the earring, the section being taken as on line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view of a fragmentary portion of the earring on an enlarged scale, showing a convex clamping plate.
Figure 5 is a view of a fragmentary portion of a modified earring.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral Ill indicates an assembled earring embodying my invention and comprising a clamping bow composed of a stationary bow element II and a movable bow element l2 hinged on a pivot [3 to the stationary element ll.
3 Claims. (01.63-44) As shown in .Figures 1 and .2, the free ends of theibow elements have integral clamping plates [4, 15 with'oonvex surfaces facing each other- As- -bestshown in 'Figure 1, which shows the earring inoperative position. on .an ear lobe, it will be seen that the convex clamping plates l4, it provide point contact on the ear lobe from opposite sides and with a diminishing pressure radiating from the point of contact.
As best shown in Figures 2 and 4, it will be seen that the convex clamping plates [4, l5 are integral with annularly shaped housing-s l1 from which the clamping plates are pressed out. It will be noted that the clamping plates l4, l5 have a element of resiliency.
As best shown in Figure 4, it will be seen that the clamping plates l4, l5 have circular outer peripheries, the plates being integrally connected with the housings their circumferences, as indicated by the numeral 19. Circular clearances 20 are formed between the plates l4, l5 and the housings H.
A toggle-link 2| is mounted on a pivot 22 in the stationary bow element II. The toggle-link 2| is bifurcated, the bifurcation being defined by sidewalls 23, 23.
The toggle-link 2| has a pin 24 transversely thereof and positioned between the pivot 22 and the walls defining the bifurcation. A through passageway 25 is formed in the toggle-link 2|.
It is to be noted that the movable bow element [2 has an extension 26 on the side opposite the clamping plate IS. The extension 26 has a cavity or receiving means 21 which. as best shown in Figure 1, serves for locking the bow elements H and I2 in ear engaging position.
Figure 5 shows a modified linkage 30 for the bow elements H and I2. The linkage 30 comprises a lower extension 3| on the bow element l2 which has a slot 32 therethrough. A bifurcated toggle-link 33 is pivotally mounted on a pin 34 in the bow element I I.
It is to be noted that the extension 3| is in angular relation with the bow element I2. The linkage shown in dotted lines shows the bow elements in open position. The solid lines show the closed position of the bow elements. The slot 32 forms a continuous or positive contact with a pin 24 in the bifurcated toggle link 33.
The convex clamping plates [4 and I5 which contact the ear lobe are adjustable and are in position so that they can be manually drawn in and out in relation to the housings l1, so as to fit ear lobes of different thicknesses.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have I! only at minor portions ofdescribed and illustrated the preferred'embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a clamping earring of the bow type comprising in combination, a clamping bow composed of a stationary bow element and of a movable bow element hinged to said stationary element, the free ends of said bow elements having integral clamping plates with convex surfaces facing each other, said surfaces in operative position providing' point contact on an ear lobe from opposite sides, a toggle link pivotally mounted on said stationary element, and having passage means therethrough, said sion opposite through said said free end and designed to pass passage means, said toggle link .having a pin transversely thereof and positioned between its pivotal mounting and the walls of said passageway to swing said movable bowelementwhereby said movable clamping plate is moved towards said stationary clamping plate.
