The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to us of any royalty thereon.
The present invention relates generally to the art of impressing or imprinting indicia, such as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) markings, letters, numerals or other symbols onto various articles of metal or other material wherein the application of force is employed through a die or other marking member to protime an identifiable deformation of a permanent character in the article to be marked. This operation is usually termed symboling by those skilled in the art and is so referred to hereinafter.
More particularly our invention relates to improvements in presses for performing symboling operations and provides for the symboling of screws, bolts and like material by means of a symboling device operatively connected to a press platen. together with a mechanism for conveying the symboled articles to a predetermined position under said platen, and means for ejecting them into a suitable receptacle after they have been symboled. More specifically these results are obtained by means of a holder in which is inserted the symboling die that it is desired to imprint, mounted on the press platen, a ratchet device or indexing mechanism for progressively rotating the mechanism carrying the symboled articles, and cam means for discharging said articles from said carrying mechanism.
In the past it has been the custom to symbol screws, bolts and similar articles by placing them in a plurality of spaced holes formed in a heavy rigid metal plate, the size of said holes depending upon the diameter of the articles to be inserted therein. The desired symbol was imprinted by means of an individual hand operation employing a conventional hammer and a hand-held die member. Performance of the work in this manner resulted in physical strain to the worker, which tended to reduce his output, the average person usually being unable to work continuously for more than approximately two hours. The d gree to which production was curtailed, of course, depended upon the physical endurance of the individual operator and, in the case of women, it was more noticeable than in men.
Accordingly, one of the objects of the present invention is the provision of a symboling device which can be conveniently operated by women and others of limited physical powers with a minimum of effort.
Another object of the invention is the production of an improved symboling machine that will be safe to operate, experience with past devices having demonstrated that physical injuries have been inflicted by misdirected blows of hammers used in the symboling operation as carried out in'accordance with the teachings of the prior art.
It isanother important object of the present invention to provide an improved mechanism for the simple, convenient, speedy and safe symboling of screws, bolts and the like.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a structure for automatic ejection of the symboled articles from the mechanism carrying them.
A still further object of the present invention resides in the provision of an adjustable mechanism enabling various sizes, shapes, and quantitles of articles to be symboled in the same device.
A preferred embodiment of our invention whereby we attain the above and other and further objects is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is an overall front elevation view of'a complete press mechanism including an improved symboling device according to our invention;
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view showing one form of work piece carrier used in the symboling operation;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the indexing and discharge mechanisms of a preferred embodiment of our invention; and
Fig. 4 is a. sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Referring now particularly to Fig. l, in which the press mechanism generally is designated 46, there is illustrated a fixed press platen comprising a transverse frame member I, adapted to re-' ceive a slide bar 2 and supported by two uprights 3 and 4 secured to the frame of the press. A base 5; adapted to receive the carrying means for articles to be-symboled rests on a table 6. Any convenient method such 'as hold-down bolts 1 may be employed to secure the base 5 to the table 5. A holder 22, in which may be inserted the various die symbols 2!, which it is desired to impress or imprint on the articles to be processed, is secured to the slide bar 2. adapted to be moved longitudinally of the frame I by means of a lever 8 pivotally mounted on the slide bar 2 as at ti and engaging the fixed frame structure of the press as by means of a slot and pin connection iii. A work carrying means such as a notched plate 9, particularly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and adapted to hold articles to be symboled, is rotatably mounted on a supporting memherfifi positioned on the base 5. The plate 9 is rotatably mounted on a boss 38 forming a pintle and extending from the top of the supporting member 35, the-bottom of said plate 9 bearing on the supporting member 35. For example, in the preferred embodiment of our invention shown and described herein, the screws, bolts or other articles to be symboled are manually-fed by the operator into the notches in the plate 9. It is evident, however, that suitable mechanism could be employed for accomplishing the feeding automatically and consequently it is not our intention to be limited by the method of feeding herein disclosed.
Accordingly it is our desire to be limited herein only by the prior art and the appended claim.
We claim:
A symboling machine comprising a fixed upright base having an upward, overhanging portion including a stamping die, a carrier portion mounted on the base below the die and arranged for vertical motion to and from the die, a disc member having peripheral notches mounted on the carrier portion for rotation about a vertical axis, means on the carrier providing a guideway extending generally tangentially to the disc member, a slider in the guideway carrying a springbiaeed pawl engageable with the said notches for step-by-step rotation of the disc member, a bellcrank medially pivoted on the said means, and with one distal end engaging the slider and the other articulated to the said overhanging portion of the base whereby the pawl is reciprocated horizontally on cyclic vertical motion of the carrier portion, a guide member positioned to urge work pieces into snug engagement with the notches in the region of the die, resilient means extending within the outer periphery of the disc, yieldable to pawl-urged motion of the disc but rigidly retaining the disc against reverse motion, and a cam positioned on the carrier centrally of the disc and extending to the peripheral region of the notches for removal of the work pieces.
