APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OFGLUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,485, dated June 28, `1881. Application filed May 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,HENRY H. BAEDER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, and WILLIAM A. BAEDER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Manufacture of Glue, of which the following is a specification.
In the usual process of manufacturing glue the stock is first soaked by placing iu vats containing lime-water, then carried to the wash-mill, where it is washed, and then car ried to the boilers and boiled until the valuable portions are extracted, when the water is drawn off for subsequent eva poration and drying of the glue and the refuse removed from the mill. Large quantities of stock are worked at once, and the'labor of handling the stock is severe and prolonged, on account of the weight of the materials andthe frequent changes that are required more or less frequently, according to the condition of the stock under treatment.
The object of our improvements is to facilitate these operations and reduce the labor required in handling the glue-stock; and the in vention consists in a wheeled tank or case for use in the soaking-vat and for transfer of the stock to the mill, in a combined washing and boiling vat; and in the combination and arrangements ofthe parts constituting the complete appuratus, as hereinafter described and claimed.

A is the soaking-vat, which is of usual construction and placed in the ground, and B is the tank or cage forcontaining the glue-stock. The cage B is made of wood, iron, or other suitable material, with its sides, bottom, and ends formed with numerous holes that will allow water topass, and its bottoln a is hinged, so that it may drop down for release of the stock, suitable catches being provided to retain the bottom closed at other times. The cage is fitted at the bottom with Ilan ged wheels b, which are loose on shortarbors or axles. The tank A is fitted with standards c at the corners, which support the track above, as
hereinat'ter described, and the wheels b of case B are positioned to engage with the said standards ,so that they serve as guides,on which the cage may be moved up and down. The cage is provided with a bail, d, to which the hoisting-rope c is connected.
At a suitable height above the ground is a frame or platform,f, supporting rails g g, that extend from over the tank A to the wash-mill or boiling-tank O, that is placed beneath the tracks more or less distant from the vat A. Abovethe vat the platform 7" is formed with an opening of a size to allow the cage B to pass easily, and the short section of each rail at the side of the opening is pivoted atg, so as to be swung outward to allow passage of the cage, and then turned back beneath the wheels.
Above the track a shaft, h., is supported in suitable bearings. At one end the shaft carriesa gear-wheel for connection of power, and also a drum, t', to which the hoisting-rope e :is connected. The shaft also extends over the Vwash-mill O, and carries at that end fast and loose pulleys lr, for a belt that drives the stirrer ofthe mill.
The wash-mill or tank C is formed of wood, and is lined on the inside withwire-netting or interlacing cross-bars of metal, which prevent the stock from packing against the sides and give water access.
l is a perforated false bottom to the tank.
m is a discharge-pipe for the glue, leading out from beneath the bottom l.
n is a second pipe for discharge of water from the washing operation.
s is a gate or man-hole plate in the side of tank O, above the bottom l, covering an opening used for removal of the refuse.
0 is a'pipe projecting over the tank, for supply of water.
p is a pipe from a steam-generator, entering the tank and extending beneath the false bottom l, and having perforations to allow escape of the steam; and q is a coiled pipe beneath the bottom l, connected with a steam-generator that supplies dry steam to the coil for heating the contents ofthe tank when condensing is required.

r is a paddle or stirrer sustained in the tank by pivots r', that have bearings in the sides ot' the tank. The bearings are to be packed for preventing the escape of liquid, and one pivot, r', is fitted with apulley, t, for the driving-belt from the pulley k of shaft 7L.
The operation of preparing, washing, and boiling the glue-stock is as follows: The vat A is supplied with lime and water, the cage B then lowered to the bottom of the vat, and the glue-stock thrown in. The water having free access to the cage the stock becomes soaked as usual, and is allowed to remain a longer or shorter time, according to its quality or condition. If it becomes necessary to remove the stock from the vat before the soaking operation is complete, which has generally to be done two or three times, the cage B will be hoisted, the bottom opened, and the stock run by a chute to ground or tioor at the side of the vat. The cage being then lowered into the vat, the stock is again thrown into it. The soaking operation being completed, the cage is to be hoisted to the track on the platform, run over the tank C, and the bottom opened to discharge the material into the tank. Water is then to be supplied by pipe 0, and the stirrer r being set in motion, the stock becomes Washed. The dirty water is then run ott' by pipe u, a necessary supply of clean water is let in from pipe o, and steam is supplied to the pipe p, so that the mass becomes heated and the soluble portions of the material are dissolved.
The heating-coil q is to be used only when the mass becomes too thin from access of water. Dry steam will then be supplied to the coil to condense the liquid by evaporation. rIhe glue passes through the bottom l, and is drawn oft' by pipe m, and the refuse finally removed through the gate s.
In some cases, when the stock does not require a first soaking, it wilI be dumped directly into the tank C. For this purpose an inclined way will be fitted from the ground to the end of the platform f, and provided with tracks, up which the material will be wheeled in cars to the tank.
/Vith this apparatus the labor of handling the material is comparatively little, and the operations can be accomplished by two men rapidly and conveniently.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction exactly as described, as they may be varied within the scope of my invention.
The stirrer may be of any suitable character. For instance, a shaft placed horizontally' 0r vertically and having radial stirring-arms may be used in place of the paddle shown.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t'- 1. The apparatus or plant for the manufacture of glue, consisting of vat-A, wheeled cage B, shaft h, provided with hoisting drum and ropes, platform f, and track, and the wash-mill or boiling-tank C, provided with water-supply and steam pipes, all substantially as shown and described, combined for use as set forth.
2. In apparatus for manufacture of glue, the cage B, fitted with ahin ged bottom and wheels, the soaking-vat A, hoisting shaft and ropes, and the elevated tracks g, substantially as shown and described, combined for operation as setforth.
3. The perforated cage B, in combination with the soaking-vat A, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combined wash-mill and boiling-tank C, provided with a perforated false bottom, a perforated steam-pipe, steam-heating coil, and discharge-pipes, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with the washing-tank C for glue-stock, of the water-supply pipe o, perforated steam-pipep, and coiled steam-pipe q, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The rotating stirrer r, in combination with the wash-mill or boiling-tank A for glue-stock, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
