UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT ZOLLER, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,340, dated June 21, 1881,
Application filed April 11l 1881. (No model.)
To all lwhom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, ALBERT ZoLLER, a citizen ot' the United States, residing` at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of' which the Yfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to that class ot' faucets for caslrs or barrels 4in which the nozzle is provided with a lateral discharge-spout, and
the stem of the valve operated by means of a' screw-rod provided with a turning wheel or handle and arranged in the axis of the nozzle.
My invention consists, first, in the combination, in a faucet, of a hollow plug externally screw-threaded, so as to screw directly into the casi: or barrel, and provided at its outer end with a screw-threaded nipple, a cylindrical shell held against the end ot' the screwthreaded nipple by a couplin g-rin g engaging said nipple and a flange upon the shell, a valve seating on a seat formed at the inner extremity of the screw-threadedplug, a screw-rod arranged to operate the valve-stem, and a discharge-spout leading from the shell, second, in the combination, in a faucet, of the externallyscreW-threaded hollow plug which screws into the barrel, of a cylindrical shell provided with a discharge-spout and connected with the screw-threaded plug by a coupling-ring, a valve seating on a seat formed at the inner extremity of the plug, the valve-stein passing through a guide in the hollow plug and provided with a head at its outer end, a spring arranged upon the valve-stem, between'its head and the said guide, the rod for operating the valve-stem passing a stuffing-box and provided with a screw-threaded portion arranged in an internally screw-threaded extension of the cylindrical shell; third, in the combination, in a faucet, of the hollow plug with a tubular shell, provided at its outer end with two diverging spouts having stop-cocks, and also provided, between said discharge-spouts, with an extension havingastufiing-box anda screwthreaded bearing for a screw-threaded rod, the valve arranged at the inner end of the plug, the valve-stem and spring, and the screw-rod for operating the valve-stem, all as hereinafter more fully described.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a plan or top view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a hollow'plug, of brass or other suitable material, which 4is provided externally with a screwthread, a, so that it can be screwed into and thereby firmly secured in the tap-hole of a caslr or barrel or other similar vessel. In the inner end of the plug is formed a beveled seat, a',
for a cone-valve, B, the stem C of which eX- tends through a guide, b, in the interior of the plug A. A spring, c, which surrounds the valve-stcm and acts upon a head d, secured thereto, has atendency to hold the valve up to its seat. The webs p, which guide the valve in the hollow plug, are cut out as shown in Fig. 2, so as to allow a free passage for the liquid when' the valve is open.
D is a cylindricalor tubular shell, from which extend two discharge-spouts, E, which diverge from the shell D, as shown in Fig. l, and each of them is provided with a stop-cock, so that when one is used the other can be closed.
The shell D is provided at its innerend with an internally screw-threaded coupling ring, o,adapted to engage witha screw-threaded nipple, d, that extends from the outer end ot' the screw plug A', said coupling-ring being formed with an annular flange, 0', that fits against a like iiange, d', on the shell D, so that the shell Will be held against the end of the said nipple, and thereby connected with the hollow plug, and also so that it can be readily connected to or disconnected from the plug, in order to permit access to be had to the interior of the plug and shell, both for the purpose of cleaning out the same, and also for removing the spring in case of its becoming weakened or broken.
The shell D is provided at the crotch formed by the two diverging discharge-spouts E E with a tubular extension, E', the axis of which is in line with'that of the shell, and with that of the valve B and its stern C when the shell is secured to the plug A. In the outer end of this tubular extensionisformed astufng-box, e, and in that part of said extension between v or barrel discharges freely through either one of the spouts E, according to which one of the stop-cocks h of said spoutsis open. When the screw-rod F is turned back the valve closes and the liquid from the cash or barrel is prevented from passing into the plug A or shell D, while all, or nearly all, the liquid previously contained in said plug and shell discharges through the open spout. In this Way while drawing off the contents of the cask into bottlesthe discharge-spouts can be alternately employed, so that there will be no stop in the drawing oft required.
l. The combination, in a faucet, of the hollow plug A, externally screw-threaded, so as to screw directly into the cash or barrel, and provided at its outer end with a screw-threaded nipple, d, the cylindrical shell D, held against the end ofthe Screw-threaded nipple by a coupling-ring,0, engaging said nipple, and aange upon the shell, the valve seating on a seat, a', formed at the inner extremity of the screwthreaded plug, a screw-rod arranged to operate the valve-stem, and a discharge-spout lead- D, provided with a discharge-spout, and connected with said screw-threaded plug by the coupling-ring O, the valve B seating in a seat, c', formed at the inner extremity of the plug, the valve-stein passing through a guide, b, and provided with a head at its outer end, the spring arranged upon the valve-stem, between its head and the said guide, the rod F, for operating the valve-stem, passing through the stufng-box e and provided with a screwthreaded portion, f, working the internally screw-threaded extension E ofthe shell D, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the hollow plug A, ot'the shell D, provided at its outer end with the two diverging discharge-spouts having stop-cocks, and also provided between said discharge-spouts with an extension, E', having the stufng-box e, and a screw-threaded bearing for the screw-threaded rod F, the "alve arranged at the inner end ot' the plug, the valve-stein and spring, and the screw-rod for operating the valve-stein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setlny hand and seal in the presence of two subseribin g witnesses.
ALBERT ZOLLER.
