HEATER FOR KETTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,315, dated June 21, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. SEYLER, of Cedarville, in the county of Stephenson and State ofIllinois, have inven ted certain new and useful Improvementsin Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my heater, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section of the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and portable means of heating kettles and culinary and preserving vessels,whieh, by utilizing the products of combustion,will prove more economical in the consumption of fuel than the means now employed; and to this end it consists of a cylindrical body or drum open at its top and closed at or near the other end with a grated bottom, and provided with adjusting-chains, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the body or drum, which should be of sufficient diameter to take in vessels designed to be heated. Near the mouth of the drum, and on its inner side, are secured atright angles four hooks, ac, and from these depend the chains b b, which are all connected at their lower ends. By this arrangement the vessel to be heated may be adjusted to or from the fire by taking up the links of the chains on the books. The chains will also adapt themselves to various sizes of utensils, or different-shaped bottoms of the same.

B represents the bottom or base of the cylinder, which is cast with legs at d, lugs or ears 0 c for securing the cylinder thereto by means of pins or rivets, and also with grate-bars, beneath which is a circular space, in order to give a better draft to the fire.

E represents the door for supplying fuel to the heater.

This apparatus, though simple,will be found to possess many advantages, and furnish housekeepers with an economical means of heating water, cooking, or preserving.

The method of operating the device is as follows: The heater is placed in any convenient place, in the open air or in an outhouse, and the "essel to be heated is placed upon the chains, adjusted at the proper distance from the fire, as before described. A fire is then built upon the grate, and the cylinder prevents the heat from radiating, but concentrates it upon the vessel to be heated, and thus saves much fuel and time.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the drum A, of the suspended chains 1) b, or their equivalents, whereby the internal vessel is supported and its distance from the fire regulated, substantially as herein described.

2. The drum or cylinder A, provided with base B, and door E in combination, with the connected adjustingchains b b, suspended from theinner side of the drum upon hooks a a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
