Description

Dec. 23, 1947. 1M. M. McPHERS ON 2,433,141
HAIR CURLER Filed July 8, 1946 Inventor "7172a May "7 Q Plrerson Patented Dec. 23, 1947 TED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates toyimprovements in hair curlers.
An object. of the invention is to provide an improved hair curler-which will be made in such .a manner that after the hair :has been curled about the curler the same may be collapsed and supported in collapsed position while ,thercurl is being set.
Another object of the invention is to provide .an improved hair curler which will be formed of rubber having a solid rubber base and top, the same being connectedtogether by means of a flexible rubber diaphragm or bellows about whichia strand of hair will be wound, aiter which the top and bottom will be compressed and held in such a manner while the curl is being set.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved hair curler formed with a rigid top and bottom, and with a collapsible central connecting portion about which the hair is wound, said upper portion being collapsible towards the base and formed with a plurality of ventilating openings, together with means for holding said curler in collapsed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved hair curler comprising a base portion adapted to be placed next to the scalp and a central flexible and collapsible portion about which the hair is to be wound, together with a cap member which is adapted to be forced down upon the hair after the same has been wound about the body of the curler, and held in collapsed position by means of a rubber band and locking ball engaging a slot in the central portion of said cap member.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved hair curler which will be highly efflcient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, A}
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved collapsible hair curler;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the improved collapsible hair curler;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; y 1
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the hair curler when in collapsed position, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the improved hair curler showing strands of hair curled about the same, the hair curler being a modification of the curler illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusiveand comprising a central coil spring and a cover therefor about which the hair is wound.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accom- *panyi'ng drawings to designate corresponding parts.
v In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved hair curler, the same including a --substantially1rigid base I formed with an annular bead 2 and an axially disposed collapsible soft rubber bellows 3 formed integrally withthe base,
and supporting the rigid, hard rubber cap I on its upper end.
The hard rubber cap 4 is provided with an annular depending flange 5, and is adapted to :be
l f orced downwardly after the hair has'been wound about. the soft rubber'bellows until it engagesandfl seats on the upper surface of the base :portiorfi" l as clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of thedrawings. A plurality of ventilating apertures 6 are formed through the side walls of the flange and form a circle about the outer edge of the "top I to permit air to pass through said apertures to ventilate the hair while it is being set within the curler.
The hard rubber cap 4 is formed in its central portion with an opening 8 which connects with the locking slot 9, through which the rubberband. III secured in the space I is adapted to extend; The rubber band I0 is provided with an integrally formed locking ball II adjacent its lower end, and with a handle portion l2 on its upper extremity, said ball normally being positioned below said locking cap when the curler is in expanded position, whereby when a strand of hair I3 is drawn through the restricted opening I in the edge of the base portion I and wound around the bellows 2, and the cap member forced downwardly over I After the hair has been allowed to set for the desired period of time within the collapsed c'ontainer, the handle I2 will be engaged and by pulling upwardly thereon, the rubber ball will be disengaged from its seat in the locking slot 9, and will be permitted to pass downwardly through.
the pening 8 in the cap I, will be automatically and re il gw m open or extended position, as shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, there has been illustrated a modification of the improved hair curler, and instead of the soft rubber bellows being used, a coil spring l5 will be substituted for the soft rubber bellows, and a, cloth or fabric covering for the spring will be provided so that the hair may be wound about the cover rather than being intertwined within the several coils of the spring.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been provided a highly efli-' cient form of collapsible hair curler, which willbe sufiiciently small that a number of these curlers may be placed upon the scalp and strands of hair wound about the same to form curls which will retain their shape for a considerable length of time, and will prevent the hair from becoming fuzzy.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention hasbeen illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from-the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention What i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A collapsible hair curler comprisinga base, a resilient bellows formed thereon, a cap member on the upper end of said bellows, and fastening means for holding said curler in collapsed position.
2. A collapsible hair curler comprising a base having an annular reinforcing bead formed about it, a resilient and collapsible bellows formed thereon, a cap member on the upper end of said bellows, and resilient means for holding said curler in collapsed position.
3. A collapsible hair curler comprising a base having an annular reinforcing bead formed about it, a, resilient collapsible bellows formed on said base, a ventilated, cap member on the upper end of said bellows, and means for locking said curler in collapsed position.
4. A collapsible hair curler comprising a base having an annular reinforcing bead formed about it, a resilient collapsible bellows formed on said base, a ventilated cap member on the upper end of said bellows formed with a deepnding annular flange adapted to be forced downwardly to en gage the upper surface of said base, and resilient means for holding said curler in collapsed position.
5. A collapsible hair curler comprising a base having an annular reinforcing bead formed about it, a resilient collapsible bellows formed on said base, a cap member formed with a depending annular apertured ventilating flange On the upper end-of said bellows, said cap member being provided with an opening and connected locking slot, and a flexible locking member supported by said base adapted to extend through said central opening and to be secured in one of said slots for holding said curler in collapsed position.
6. The subject matter as claimed in claim 5, and said base being provided with a restricted opening through its side for receiving a strand of hair to be curled about said bellows.
'7. The subject matter as claimed in claim 5, and said bellows comprising a coil spring and a fabric covering therefor.
