' A J. GALE.-
Sulky Plow.
No. 243,242. Patented June 21,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
AUGUSTUS J. GALE, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 243,242, dated June 21, 1881,
Application filed February 17, 1881.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS J. GALE, of Albion, Calhoun county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements on sulkyplows; and theinv'cntion consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of devices by means of which the bail to which the plows are attached may be elevated or depressed, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which a sulky-plow is shown in perspective with my i mprovement attached, A represents the arched axle mounted upon the traction-wheels B B, and provided with a bail, D, and mechanism at each end of the axle for controlling the elevation of the axle, all of which are of the usual construction.
l secure to the axle a hanger, E, to one arm of which I fulcrum the lever F, which is pivotally secured to the bail D, and the opposite end carries a pin, a, upon which is properly journaled a friction-roller, I).
G is a bell-erank lever pivotally secured to the hanger E, and one arm of this lever terminates in a. handle, H, which extends up to within easy reach of the driver. The opposite end (No model.)
of this lever is segmentally slotted, as at d, within which travels the friction-roller I) on the lever F.
' In practice the axle is adjusted to the desired elevation, and the plows are attached to the bail D in the usual manner. When it is desired to elevate the plows so that they will not perform their function of plowing, the le ver H is drawn rearward, which, by the connections hereinbefore described, necessarily elevates the bail D, and with it the plow, so
that the point of the plow will clear the ground, the lever H being held in such position by a proper catch.
I am aware of Patents Nos. 156,128 and 225,668, granted October 20, 1874, and March 16, 1880, respectively, and I lay no claim to
