ROLLER SKATE WHEEL Filed April 19, 1946 v 26 QX 7 ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 9, 1947 ROLLER, SKATE WHEEL Frank J. Wagner, Franklin Square, .N. Y., assignor of one-half to Carroll M. Bierman, Franklin Square, N. Y.
Application April19, 1946, Serial No. 663,504
8 Claims.
This invention relates to roller skate Wheels in general, and more especially to the roller skate wheels used in the skates of professional skaters, performers, and the like.
Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide an improved rollerskate wheel having a :bearing and ornamental disk intimately associated with one another.
It is still another object 'of'th-e present invention to provide an improved roller skate wheel having a tread member, a one piece bearing housing, .a .ball bearing assembly in said shell, a provision for expeditiously locking the several units to one another, and in addition interchangeably connected ornamental disks.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a roller skate wheel made according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the wheel.
In the embodiment shown, the wheel I includes a. tread member 2 preferably composed of wood such as maple and the like, the tread in the present instance having an axial opening 3 in communication with the opening 4, both openings terminating in annular recesses, the opening -3 in the annular recess 5, and the opening 4 in the annular recess 6. While the dimensions may vary without departing from the general spirit of the invention, excellent results have been achieved when the openings 3 and d are co-axial, the opening 3 having not only a smaller diameter than the opening 4, but also being narrower in depth. As an instance, with the diameter for the tread 2 of approximately 4% inches, the diameter of the opening 3 should not exceed 1 inches as compared to 2 inches for the diameter of the opening 4, and the width of the opening 3 should not exceed of an inch as compared to 1% inches for the width of the opening 4. In the pre ent instance, the recesses 5 and 6 also differ relative to one another, the recess 5 having an outer diameter of substantially 2% inches while the recess 6 has an outer diameter of substantially 3 inches, while the width of the recess 5 does not exceed $3 of an inch as compared to A6 of an inch for the width of the recess 6.
Having a substantial machine lit with the openings 3 and 4, there is provided the bearing housing or shell 1, having a main tubular portion ,8 disposed in the opening 4, and a diminished tubular portion 9 disposed in the opening 3 with the iii 2 "intermediate shoulder in of the shell I engaging the intermediate shoulder ll of the tread '2 be,- tween the openings 3 and 4.
The shell l, as shown, preferably has an an .nular extension l2 formed-intermediate'the openings '3 and '4.
For anchoring the shell 1 in the tread 2, there is provided the annular disk 13 having threads "on its inner periphery engaging the threads on the outer periphery of the free end of the tubular portion 9. The disk 13, preferably is provided with spanner recesses 14 and I5 to receive a spanner and turn the disk 13 into position .in the recess 5.
In the tubular portion '8, there are :housed the two ball bearing units 16 and H which have the outer collars .l 8 and 1:9, respectively, and the inner collars # 20 and 21 respectively. The collars l8 and 28 support between them the set of ball bearings 22 and the collars l9 and 2! support between them 7 the set of ball bearings '23. The outer periphery 'of the collars l8 and i9 is finished to have a machine fit with the inner periphery of the tubular portion 8. The ball bearing unit H, in the presentinstance, is disposed against the annular extension !2 and the inner collars 20 and 2| are preferably spaced from one another by the spacer 2%. After the ball bearing units l6 and I1 are so positioned with the spacer 2-4 in the tubular portion 8, then the same may be anchored in position by the collar 25 screw threadedly connected to the internal screw threads on the outer end of the tubular portion 8. This collar 25, .as shown, is provided with spanner recesses 26 and 21 to rece-ive aspan-ner and turn the collar 25 into position for looking the bearings l6 and H in place.
In the present instance, the collar 25 also has an internal screw thread to receive the external screw thread of the cap 28. This cap 28, in the present instance, has a tubular portion .29 and a head 39 terminating in a polygonal shape hexagonal in the present instance to receive a Wrench. Preferably the wrench receiving polygonal poris wide enough to receive a wrench, excellent results having been achieved whenthis rise .3] does not exceed of an inch.
-The polygonal edge portion of the head 30, furthermore, extends beyond the outer periphery of the tubular portion 29, so that, as shown, there may be anchored between the shoulder 3i and the inner face of the recess -6 and also the outer ends of the tubular portion a and collar 25, oneor more ornamental disks, two of such disks being shown the present instance, to wit, the 3.2 and 53. he d k .33 ha ing an out r diameter substantially coincident with the outer periphery of the recess 6, while the outer diameter of the disk 32 is smaller in the interest of a predetermined ornamental effect, and the inner diameters of both disks 32 and 33 preferably coincide with the outer periphery of the tubular portion 29 of the cap 28. Various combinations of colors may be selected fOr the outer face of the cap 28, and the outer faces of the disks 32 and 33, to create the ornamental effect to be produced. In some instances, the silver sheen of a chromium finish on the outer face of the head 30 of the cap 28 may form part of a color scheme where the outer face of the disk 32 is red in color, and the outer face of the disk 33 is green in color.
Before the cap 28 is screwed into position in assembly of the roller skate wheel to the truck of a wheel, preferably the axle 34 of the truck has its diminished portion 35 positioned in the inner collars 20 and 2| of the ball bearing units It and I1, respectively, and then the washer 36 and nut 31 secured in place.
While the tread 2 is preferably composed of wood, such as maple wood, the shell 1, annular disk l3, bearing units It and I1, collar 25 and cap 28 are preferably composed of metal such as steel or the like, the ornamental disks 32 and 33 may be composed either of a suitable metal with an enamel colored coating or composed of a colored light transmitting plastic material. The free end of the tubular portion 8 may terminate flush with the inner face of the recess 6, but the free end of the tubular portion 9 preferably extends beyond the inner face of the recess to receive annular locking disk 23.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
