JESSE LOCKHART, OF NIANTIO, ILLINOIS.
RAILWAY-RAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,142, dated June 21, 1881,
Application filed December 16,1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEssE LOCKHARI, a resident of the town of Niantic, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Railway- Rails, of which the following is a specification, (and which has never been patented to me nor to others with my knowledge andconsent in any foreign country.)
My invention is an improvement on Patent No. 229,538, granted to me July 6,1S80,for an improvement in rail-joints; and it consists in railway-rails having a flange of double thickness, and joined together in a manner to form a continuous rail that will admita certain degree of lateral expansion and contraction in the individual rails.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a section of my device in side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view of the rail, showing the construction of the flange, and Fig. 3 is an underside view. Fig. 4: shows rails detached, and Fig. 5 represents the oblong-headed bolt.
(No model.)
A and B are ends of railsjoined together as shown, and provided with slots (1 d to receive bolts 0 c. Bolts 0 0 are provided with oblong heads 0 c, which fit against the rail and prevent the bolts from turning, thereby keeping the pins in the lower end of the bolts always directed across the slots. The rails are formed, as shown, in such a manner that part of the flange of one overlaps a part of the flange of the other, and when the bolts are secured form a continuous rail having a degree of lateral expansion and contraction limited by the length of slots d d.
I claim The rails constructed with flanges of double thickness, joined together as shown, and provided with slots extending downward through the overlapping flanges, in combination with the oblong-headed bolts, as and for the purpose set forth.
JESSE LOOKHART. Attest:
