WINDOW DRAPERY GONSTRUCTfON Filed Jan. 22, 1945 INVENTOR QCyrwG Soff ATTORNEY g Patented Nov. 18, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW DRAPERY CONSTRUCTION Cyrus G. Soff, New York, N. Y.
Application January 22, 1945, Serial No. 573,909
7 Claims. 1
This invention relates to window drapery construction. It is particularly directed to a swag, valence, or cornice and the like articles.
An object of this invention is to provide a window drapery construction comprising a drapery support removably mounted on a window frame or wall and drapery detachably attached to the support.
A further object of this invention is to provide a construction of the character described comprising a pair of brackets on opposite sides of a window frame, and a support provided with angle members adapted to slidably engage the brackets, and drapery removably attached to the support.
Still another object of. this invention, is to provide in drapery construction of the character described, a horizontal board, angle members attached to the underside of the board and having downwardly extending arms at the rear edge of the board to be slidably received in brackets attached to a window frame, and a drapery attached to the upper side of the horizontal board adjacent the rear edge thereof, by means of snap fasteners.
Still another object of this invention is to provide drapery construction comprising brackets attached to window frame or wall and having vertical slots, and a cornice having a top wall, end Walls, and a front wall, and angle irons attached to the underside of the top wall and provided with downwardly extending arms aligned with the rear edge of the top wall and received in the slots formed by said brackets for removably mounting the cornice on the window frame or a wall.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a neat and durable drapery construction of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and disassemble, and which shall yet be practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the combination of elements, features of construction, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a window provided with drapery construction embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof;
Fig. 3v is a rear view of one of the brackets;
Fig. 4 is a top view of said bracket;
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of one of the angle members;
Fig. 6 is a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a swag drapery removed from the drapery support;
Fig. 8 is an elevational transverse cross-sectional view through a cornice embodying the invention and mounted on the window frame; and
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the cornice removed from the Window frame.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, Ill designates a window frame having side portions ll and a top transverse portion I2. Attached to the upper ends of the side portions H are brackets l3. Brackets l3 may be made of metal or other suitable material, and each comprises a substantially rectangular plate formed on its inner side with a vertical central groove or slot M. The bracket is also formed on each side of the slot with a pair of countersunk openings 15. The .twobrackets are at the same level, just below the upper end of the window frame, and are attached to the window frame by means of screws l6 passing through the countersunk openings [5 and screwed into the window frame. The upper edges of the brackets i3 are disposed somewhat below the upper end of the window frame.
Removably mounted on the brackets i3 is a drapery support or cornice 29. The support 20 comprises a flat horizontal board 2! which may be made of wood or any other suitable material.
Attached to the underside of the board 2| are a pair of similar angle members 22. Each angle member 22 comprises a top horizontal forwardly extending portion 23, and a downwardly extending vertical arm 24. Portions 23 are each formed with countersunk openings 25' to receive screws 26 for attaching the angle members to the underside of board 2|.
It will be noted that the length of board 2! is substantially equal to the width of the window frame. The angle members 22 are centrally aligned with respect to the side walls ll of the window frame so as to be slidably received within the slots It. The arms 24 are preferably of such length as to extend below the brackets 13 and contact the window frame to prevent tilting of the top board.
Attached to the upper surface of board 2| adjacent the rear edge thereof are a plurality of male snap fasteners 30. Supported on board 2| is a drapery 3i here shown for the purpose of illustration in the form of a swag. The swag 3! comprises a top portion 32 adapted to cover the board 2!. It may be made of lining material preferably well reinforced. It may be made of one or more thicknesses of cloth. Stitched to the forward edge of the piece of cloth 32 and hanging down therefrom is an ornamental portion 33 made of drapery cloth. The cloth 33 is stitched to cloth 32 along line of stitching 34 as shown in the drawing. Attached to the drapery portion 32 adjacent the rear edge thereof are a plurality of female snap fasteners 35, the sockets of which are on the underside of the drapery. The female snap fasteners 35 are spaced the same as the male snap fasteners 30 and are adapted to be snapped onto the latter. It will now be understood that the drapery piece or swag 3| may be removed from the support 20 for the purpose of dry cleaning or for repairs or replacement. Furthermore, the support 2!] may be bodily removed either alone or with the swag thereon, from the window frame. It may be lifted up to withdraw arms 24 from slots M.
In Figs. 8 and 9 there is shown a cornice 4B embodying the invention and removably mounted on the window frame In. The cornice 40 has a top wall M, end walls 42, and a front wall 63. Attached to the underside of the top wall 4| are angle members 22. The angle members 22 have downwardly extending arms 24 substantially aligned with the rear edge of wall ll for reception within the brackets l3 attached to the window frame. The cornice may be covered with lining material on all surfaces thereof, as at 44, except the outside of the end walls and the front face of the front panel, which are covered by ornamental cloth as at 45.
It will be understood that valence draperies may be snapped onto the support 20 in the same manner as the swag 3|.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
