No. 243,091. a Patentedlunezmssi.

ALONZO M. WAGNER, OF KEOKUK COUNTY, IOWA.
-- END-GATE FOR wAGONs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,091, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed April 15, 1881. (Model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that vI, ALONZO M. .WAGNEE, of Keokuk count-y, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-GatesforVehieles, which I denominate The Excelsior Combinatory End-Gate and I do hereby deelarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whieh- Figure l is an end view, showing the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, lookin g at the gatefrom the inside; and Fig. Sis aview showing the gate open and its detachable section.
This invention relates to improvements in end-gates for wagon or vehicle bodies, having for its object, mainly, to guard against the working out of the gate and to permit it to be readily opened, though acted upon by the pressure of the load; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A marks the vehicle-body, to which is pivoted or hinged so as to open downwardly the gate B, of less height than the sides of the body. Its (the gates) top edge is bound by a strap of sheet or hoop iron projecting in the form of right-angled hooks a at its ends, which,.as the gate closes, fit into slots a in the end of the body and clasp the sides thereof to aid in holding the gate in its closed position. Cleats b, secured to the insides of the body, limit the closing position of the gate to an upright one.
B is the complement ontopdetachable section of the gate, it consisting of a board with downwardly-extending arms or bars c, which fit into eyes c upon the inside of the gate, and are reduced at their lower ends to enable them to lap the gate cleats or stops b.
To the top edge of the gate-section B is fastened a strap of sheet or hoop iron, withits ends terminating beyond those of the board or section B into hooks d, similar to hooks a, to hook over the top edges of and enable the strengthening of the body-sides by the said gate-section.
To the outside of the gate-section B is secured a stout pin or peg, e, preferably semicylindrical in cross-section, which lits into eyes or staples e upon the outside of the gate.
C O are two wings hinged to the body at its gate end, so as to swing horizontallyor at right angles to the plane in which the gate opens.
f Slots are made in the .rear end edges of the body to receive the straps of the wing-hin ges,
to allow the wings to abut edgewise against the inside projecting portions of the body and the wings to shut against the gate, as seen in Fig. 1. The wings thus shut against the gate, and with their hooks f inserted into the eyes or staples j upon the gate, the gate is securely fastened in position as against working or jarring' out of the body, and can be readily opened, though exposed to the pressure of the load, asit is obvious that, there being no direct pressure upon the wings, they can be readily released from the gate, which will allow the gate to beswung down without prying it open. The top edges of the wings are preferably bound with straps of hoop or sheet iron to strengthen them and avoid premature wear.
Having thus fully described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the downwardly-opening gate B, having the hooks t and eyes c upon one side, and staples or eyes e and f', of the detachable section B', having arms c, pin e, and hooks d, and the vlaterally-opening wings C, having hooks f, substantially as setforth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALONZO M. WAGNER.
