Coupling for Shafting.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC GEORGE M. GONW'AY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
COUPLlNG FOR SHAFTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,063, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed March 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. M. CONWAY, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for Shaftiug; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to shaft-couplings, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my device, the sleeve for holding the two sections of shafting in position with relation to each other being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a like view with the sleeve in full lines, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
Hitherto in pruning the ends of shafting it has been found necessary to use a coupling sufficiently heavy to bear the wrenching strain which the shafting is subject to, and to communicate the power from one section to the other. This has proved very cumbersome;
hence my invention, which consists in keying or doweling the ends of the sections together and securing them in position by a light sleeve.
(No model.)
A A are sections of shafting. The section A has a slot, a, to receive a key, I), that projects from the end of section A. A sleeve, B, is now slipped on, and as it has split and screwthreaded flanges'O, these may be tightened down upon the sections by nuts 0, which will prevent the slipping of either section out of place. Now, as the shaft revolves all the strain will be borne by the key b and the ends of the sections, and the connection can only be broken bya strain which is sufficient to shear the key in two.
I claim as my invention-- 'The combination of section A, slotted as shown, and section A, having key b, with a sleeve, B, having split flanges and tighteningnuts, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of December, 1880.
GEO. M. CONWAY.
