Application December 6, 1945, Serial No. 633,224
4L Claims. (Cl. 119-86) This invention relates to combs, and more particularly to combs for use on animals, and aims to provide a practical and efficient comb capable of delivering an extermlnating powder or other insecticide under the hair of the animal and to deposit it on the skin where the parasitic insects or vermin are found.
The above broad as well as additional and more specific objects will become apparent in the following description, wherein characters ofreference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be understood that the drawing is intended for the purpose of illustration only, and that it is neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to the specic details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the comb.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the accordionlike agitator loosely mounted within the powder compartment of the comb.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through one of the prongs of the comb.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, with the plug or stopper removed.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates the body of the comb which comprises a unitary frame made of any suitable material, such as, for instance, wood or a so-called plastics composition. TheI frame includes the top section II, the end sections I2 and I3, and the bottom section I4. The body l0 is of sufficient width, as shown in Fig. 2, to provide a compartment I enclosed by the frame, the two sides of the frame being open. These two sides, however, are closed by walls I6 of resilient material, such as, for instance, rubber, which are secured to the sides of the frame in any desired manner to close the said sides.
Loosely but compactly mounted within the compartment I5 is an accordion-like agitator for the purpose presently to be set forth. From the lower section Ill of the frame, a plurality of spaced prongs or teeth extend, either integrally, as shown, or they may be separately attached to the said section. Each prong I1 has an axial channel I8 therethrough. The floor I9 of the compartment I5, which is provided by the top of the lower frame section I4, is shaped trough-like, and
2 the upper ends of the channels I8 lead into the trough of the iioor I9.
At one end of the frame I0, an inwardly-tapering opening, rectagular in cross-section, is provided at 20 through the end section i3. A plug 2l having a knurled rim 22 is adapted to register snugly in the opening 2Q to serve as a removable closure.
The agitator 23 is formed by bending a single sheet of resilient material, such as, for instance, steel or aluminum, into the shape of an accordion,
as shown, having the outside leg sections 24 positioned against the walls I6 and resting upon the uppermost side edges of the oor I9. The outer surfaces of the walls I6 may be roughened as indicated by the intersecting diagonal lines in Fig. 1.
An insecticide powder is introduced into the compartment I5 through the opening 20, whence the powder enters between the folds of the member 23. In order to prevent trapping of any of the powder between the lower connecting folds 25 of the member, a plurality of spaced holes or openings 26 is provided through those folds. In use, the comb is applied to an animal with the teeth brought through the fur into contact with the skin, and the side walls I6 are successively squeezed and released in an obvious manner. When the walls are squeezed together, the powder obviously seeks the outlets through the channels IS down the teeth Il, whence it is forced out against the skin of the animal. The accordionlike agitator obviously serves to assist in the operation of preventing the powder from caking and in its distribution into the teeth.
Obviously, modifications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A comb comprising a frame having an opening therethrough, said. frame having flexible side walls covering the sides of said opening, comb teeth extending integrally from said frame and having channels therethrough communicating with said opening between said walls, an accordion-like agitator loosely mounted in said opening between said walls, said frame having a filler opening therethrough into said opening between said walls.
2. A comb comprising a unitary frame having a window-like opening passing therethrough, resilient walls secured to said frame on opposed sides thereof thereby closing said opening and providing a compartment within said frame between said walls, said frame having a ller opensilient Walls secured to said frame on opposed sides thereof thereby closing said opening and providing a compartment within said frame between said Walls, said frame having a ller opening into said compartment and having spaced Comb teeth extending from one edge thereof, said teeth having channels communicating with said compartment, and an agitator member loosely mounted in said compartment, said agitator comprising an=accordionlike member with the folds thereof extending longitudinally in said compartment, said compartment having a trough-shaped sides thereof thereby closing said opening andA providing a compartment within said frame between said walls, said frame having a filler lopening into said compartment and having spaced comb teeth extending from one edge thereof, said teeth having channels communicating with said compartment,' and an agitator member looselyf mounted in said compartment, said agitator comprising an accordion-like memberV Withz the; folds thereof extending longitudinally in said;v compartment and ,with the opposed Wallsrthereof-kbeingpositioned adjacent said resilient Wal1s,those ofgsaid folds occurring atv thev bottom of; said member having vertical openings" therethrough.
4; A comb comprising a unitary; frame having a Window-like opening passing therethrougnprecor, the opposed Walls of said agitator being positioned adjacent said resilient walls and restliung' upon the cuter uppermost edges of said trough-shaped floor.
