Oct'. 21, 1947. H. L. APFELBAUM HINGE Filed Aug. 1, 1944 22 /3 HunaLApfeIbaum A`T7T/'QR/vfr7 l!)l VE N TOR Patented Oct. 21, 1947 HINGE Huna L. Apfelbaum, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Victor Metal Products Corporation, Brooklyn, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 1, 1944, Serial No. 547,559
8 Claims.
This invention relates to molded hinges and particularly to such hinges as are molded integrally with the cover and container parts of molded boxes and the like, and is an improvement over my prior Patent No. 2,347,981, for Molded hinge.
In my said prior patent, the two molded hinge parts are held against separation by means of a pair of end sleeves. Such sleeves, while satisfactorily operative are comparatively expensive. The present invention is therefore directed to a simple, inexpensive and easily available means for holding the hinge parts together, while permitting the required relative rotation.
The invention further contemplates the provision of such holding means as is not likely to creep along the held parts during long continued use of the hinge and is permanently fixed in place and hence not likely to get out of order.
The various objects of the invention Will be clear from the description which follows and from the drawings, in which Fig. l is a fragmentary top plan view of a box showing my hinge applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same showing the parts disassembled.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the practical embodiment of the invention shown by way of example, the cylindrical hinge r" member lo which may be termed the male member is shown molded integrally with the box cover l l, while the recessed hinge member l2, which may be termed the female member is shown molded integrally with the container part I3 of the box.
The male hinge member l comprises the generally cylindrical central portion I4 terminating at each end in a coaxial end portion or pin as i5 or l preferably of reduced diameter. Preferably, through not necessarily, the pins are of the same length and diameter, the total length of the male hinge member including the central enlarged portion and the projecting end portions or pins, the end portions l5 and I6 being in rearward spaced relation to the rear wall l1 of the cover l l.
Said male member is preferably joined integrally to said rear wall Il by the connecting portion i8, being molded integrally and simultaneously with the molding of the cover.
The female member l2 of the hinge is provided with inner surfaces designed to fit and engage and to serve as a partial bearing for the outer Surfaces of the male member and to allow rotation of the male member thereon. Said female member is therefore molded preferably in semicylindrical form and as a projection outstanding from the rear surface 22 of the Container part I3 of the box. The top surface 23 of the member I2 is preferably coplanar and continuous with the upper edge 2d of the container part, an inner peripheral lip as I9 upstanding from the upper edge of the container part and being arranged to enter the corresponding groove 20 of the cover to provide a friction closure. In the central part of the female member, is made the recess 25, of semicylindrical form corresponding to and adapted to receive the under half of the central portion lli of the male member. The inner surfaces of the end walls 2B and 21 of the recess 25 are adapted to engage the corresponding end walls 23 and 29 respectively of the cylindrical portion l and to prevent longitudinal movement of the portion I in the recess and thereby to align the box cover with the container part of the box and to prevent relative sidewise movement thereof.
Projecting respectively from the end Walls 26 and 2l the hollow semi-cylindrical pin-receiving end projections 3D and 3|, each of which has a semi-cylindrical recess therein. The pin l5 of the male member is adapted to t snugly into the recess 32 while the pin I6 similarly fits into the recess 33 of the part 3l, said recesses 32 and 33 being of the proper size to permit rotation of the respective pins therein. The recesses 25, 32, and 33 are all open at the top and are in coaxial alignment With each other so that when the male portion li is moved downwardly through the open top of and into the recess 25, the pins l5 and I6 fit snugly and rotatably in their respective recesses 32 and 33 in the parts 30 and 3l.
'In the closed position of the cover I l, the under edge rests on the upper edge 24 of the container part with the lower half of the portion i4 in the recess 25 and the lower halves of the projections i5 and I6 similarly rotate within and stay in the recesses 32 and 33 therefor, the male member being prevented by means soon to be described from lifting out of the female member during such rotation.
Suitable means are provided to prevent lifting of the male member out of the female member or possible separation of the hinge parts. Said means is intended to form a permanent fastening after being once assembled and is inexpensive to make and to position. As shown, the fastening means takes the form of an open ring 3'5 preferably of non-resilient Wire. To make a permanent and secure connection between the hinge parts, the circumferential groove 36 is made in and around the pin I5 in inward spaced relation to the end thereof and the similar groove 31 is made in the corresponding pin I6. The depth f the groove is preferably at least half the thickness or diameter of the material of the wire ring 35.
Concentric and substantially coplanar with the groove 3G is the circumferential groove 38 in the outer surface of the recessed member 33, the corresponding groove 39 being concentric and substantially coplanar with the groove 3l. Thus, when the hinge parts are assembled as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 the groove 36 is substantially aligned with the groove 38 and the groove 31 similarly aligned with the groove 39. The wire member 35 in substantially U-shaped form is then arranged in place, the lower leg 4S being inserted into the groove as 3B of vthe recessed member and the other leg into the groove as 38 of the pin. The free ends of the wire member 35 are then bent toward each other by means of a suitable tool such as a pair of pliers to squeeze the member into the form of a somewhat flattened open ring.
It will be noted that because of the difference in the diameters of the concentric grooves as 3S and 38, the member 35 does not assume a cornpletely circular shape (see Fig. 4) and enters only the inner part of the smaller groove. Enough of the member engages the pin l5 however, to prevent adequately any relative transverse separation of the hinge parts, while permitting the cover to rotate relatively to said wire member, the longer portion of which engages a considerable part of the groove walls of the recessed member.
Since different parts of the groove walls of the pin engage the pin holding portion l!! of the wire member 35 during the rotation of the cover during its opening and closing movement, no appreciable wear of the parts occurs. There is further no danger of the wire member becoming straightened or slipping out of the grooves, hence it will be seen that I have provided a permanent, efficient, and non-slipping fastening means for the parts inexpensive to manufacture and assemble and well designed to perform its functions.
Any variation or modification of the invention described above within the spirit thereof is intended to be included in the scope of the appended claims.
