No.l 242,835.
WTA/5555 UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM n. MIGHENEE, or osvvEeo7 NEw'vonx.
STEAM-GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,835, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed November 29, 1880. (Model.)
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MIGHENER, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Governors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of governors which, aside from the ordinary regulating ot the ingress of the steam to the cylinder during the operation of the engine, also cutoff the flow of steam in case of breakage or disconnection of the governor-belt, and thus prevent the dan gers incident to excessive velocity of the engine.
y improvements consist, chiefly, in the combination of a governor-valve case havin ga single vertical steam-passage with an annular enlargement at its intersection with the lateral induction-passage, and provided, above and below said enlargement, respectively, with a single port, and a valve arranged in the vertical passage, and having at each of the aforesaid ports two peripheral flanges, with a peripheral recess between same, and a steam-passage ex tended vertically through the axis of said valve, by which construct-ion and combination` a governor-valve is obtained which is simple in construction, eicien tand sensitivein its operation, and capable of automatically closing the valve in case of accidental slipping or breaking of the governor-belt or defects in the actuating mechanism of the governor.
My improvements also consist in improved means of deectin g and uniformlydistributin g the ow of steam around the valve, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are vertical sections of a governor, showing my improved valve in various positions; and Figs. 3 and et are horizontal sections on lines a x and y y, respectively. Y
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
G represents the base of the governor, in the form of a shell or case, having a single vertical steam passage, B, intersected by a lateral steam-induction passage, A, said passages being adapted to be connected, respectively, with the steam-chest and with the steam-pipe in the ordinary manner.
The vertical passageB has at its intersection with the passage A an annular enlargement,- 0, and is provided above and below this enlargement with single ports aa', through which slides and in which is guided vertically avalve, V, which, by means of a rod, e, is connected with and actuated by the vibratory governorarms D in the ordinary manner.
The valve V has at each ofthe ports a a two external peripheral tlanges, b b b b', which are fitted steam-tight to the peripheral face of said ports. The two flanges at' each of the ports are arranged such a distance asunder that the lower ange will close the port when the governor is at rest, and the upper flange willbe carried into like position when the governor has attained its maximum speed. A circumferential recess or channel, c, in the exterior of the valve between the flanges aforesaid, opens the ports a a as the en gineis working at ordinary speed and the valve V is held at an intermediate position. Vertical ribs r extended across the channels c serve to guide the valvein its movement.
The valve V has extended verticallythrou gh `its axis alsteam-passage, s, so that simultaneously with the escape of steam through the lower port, steam is also allowed to pass through the upper port, and thence through the center of the valve, the latter current of steam being thus brought directly in line with the outlet of the passage B before uniting the two currents, and at the same time augmentin g the capacity of the valve and rendering the same more sensitive in its action.
In order to thoroughly distribute the steam completely around thev valve V, l place in the passage A a diaphragm, finsufficiently back of the valve V to allow a portion ot the steam to circulate between them, said diaphragm deiiecting the steam and distributing it completely around the valve and through the ports, as indicated by arrows inthe drawings.
It will be observed that the steam-space between the delector u and valve V communicates directly with and constitutes part of the annularsteam-passageosurrounding the valve, thus producing the aforesaid effect.
IOO
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The improved governorvalve herein described, consisting of the combination of the case G, having a single vertical steam-passage, B, with an annular enlargement, o, at its inter-- section with the steam-induction passage A, and provided above and below the same with a single port, a a', and the valve V, having at each of said ports two peripheral flanges, b b b b', and intermediate channels c, and provided with the axial passage s, and the de-
