COKE BREAKER I Filed June '8, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 /5 INVENTOR.
' 7272 pruzl'o Patented Sept. 30, 1947 UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE COKE BREAKER John Drubko, J efierson, Ohio Application June 8, 1945, Serial No. 598,321
Claims.
This present invention relates to devices associated with the fire boxes of boilers particularly locomotive boilers for preventing a boiler explosion. The latter is quite often due to the fact that the coal in the firebox is packed and for lack of an adequate supply of air turns into coke. The coke develops intense heat that weakens the back tube sheet in which the fire tubes or flues are mounted.
The main object of the invention is the construction of a mechanical device preventing the formation of coke or breaking up the cokeinto small parts.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novelty of construction, combination and arrangement of parts specifically described in the following specification and claimed in the appended claims.
The description should be read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a back end view of the fire box of a locomotive, equipped with the preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a central vertical section on line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
In the drawing in which like characters of reference designate like or similar parts, numeral 2 denotes a boiler having fire tubes or flues 3 secured at their back ends in a back tube sheet 4. In front of the back tube sheet l is the fire box 5 with rearwardly inclined grates 6. Between the front portion 1 of the grates and the lower part of the back tube sheet is a relatively narrow space for the rotary motion of an arm 8 which is attached at its inner end to a shaft 9 journaled at its front end in a bearing It! attached to the bottom side of the back end of the boiler. The back end of the shaft is journaled in a bearing ll attached to the fire box back sheet l2 and below the higher back end of the grates in the upper part of the ash pit l3. The shaft extends beyond the fire box back sheet and carries there a gear M which meshes with the upwardly extending teeth l5 of a rack It. The latter is slidably arranged in guides ll fixed to the outer side of the fire box back sheet and extends to one side of the fire box. Sheet l2 has a door opening H3. The portion of the rack projecting beyond the outer side of the fire box has teeth l9 formed upon its back side which mesh with a gear 20 secured upon a vertical shaft 2| the lower end portion of which is journaled in a bearing 22 attached by bolts 23 to the outer side of the outside fire box sheet 24 which surrounds the fire box, the ashpit and boiler and is spaced from the inner fire box side sheet by stays 25. The top end of the shaft carries a hand wheel 25 which is manipulated by the fireman whenever coal lying above the opening turns into coke which unduly heats and thereby weakens the back tube sheet.
While I have described and illustrated my device as associated with a locomotive boiler, it may prove equally useful if connected to any boiler.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described the combination with a boiler and its fire box including a grate, the front end of which is spaced from the back end of the boiler, of a coke crushing means operative in the space defined, operating means for the first named means extending lengthwise of and below the grate and operable outside of the fire box.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with a boiler and a fire box having a grate the front end of which is spaced from the back end of the boiler, of a cokecrushing arm rotatably arranged in the space, a shaft secured at the front end to the inner end of the arm and extending backwardly through the ashpit and outside of the firebox, and operating means outside of the firebox for rotating the shaft and swinging the arm.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with a boiler and firebox having a grate spaced from the adjacent end of the boiler, of a journal attached to the boiler, a shaft journaled in the journal and extending outwardly of the firebox, a coke crushing arm fixed on the shaft and swingable in the space defined, and means extraneous to the firebox for rotating the shaft.
4. In a device of the class described the combination with a boiler and firebox including a grate spaced from the adjacent end of the boiler,
of a bearing attached to the boiler, a shaft journaled in the bearing and extending beneath the grate and outside of the firebox, a coke crushing arm secured to the shaft and disposed for movement in the space between the grate and boiler, a bearing attached to the firebox and journaling the shaft, and rack means for rotating the shaft and swinging the arm.
5. In a device of the character described the combination with a boiler and firebox having a grate spaced from the boiler, a bearing attached to the boiler, a. second bearing attached to the firebox, a shaft journaled in the bearings and extending *outside of the firebox, :a coke crushing arm secured to "the shaft and rotatable .in the space, a gear on the shaft outside of the firebox, a bar having a rack meshing with said gear, additional rack teeth on the bar, a hand wheel shaft geared to the additional rack teeth.
