- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in furnace construction and which embodies among other characteristics a grate arrangement permitting the ashes and clinkers to be most etl'ectively removed with out undue disturbance of the fire bed.
' Another object of the invention consists in the provision and arrangement of a form of grate tobe oscillated beneath the fire bed.
An. additional object of the invention contemplates acentral form of dumping grate to let thebu'rned out middle of the fire bed to fall within the ash pit whereby the glowing coalsadjacent the sides of the fire box or fire brick lining therefor will be saved.
More specifically stated the different forms of grates are to be operated by a single control lever from a given position.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 5 is a rear elevation of the circular form of grate.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the control lever or grate shaker bar.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line 77 of Figure 2 illustrating the arrangement of the gearing for the central forms of grate construction.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 taken on line 8-8 of Figure 2 showing the connecting member for the central grate bars to preserve meshing engagement of said gears.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally the casing of a furnace having the major portion of its fire box compartment 11 lined with-suitable heat resisting lining 12 in the nature of fire brick and the like. An annular ring 13 having ears 14: depending from the under side thereof and secured to the casing 10 below the heat resisting lining or fire brick subdivides the lower portion of the furnace into a fire box and ash pit, the latter indicated as at 15. Arms 16, carried by and dependingfrom the under sides of the ring 13 and inwardly offset in right-angularly disposed relation-adjacent the ends thereof terminate to provide'horizont-ally disposed arcuate-shaped supporting members 17 I I x 3 '5 The circular form of' grate,referredto in the foregoingyand as indicated "at 18', isprovided' withsolid portions 19 at spaced 'inter vals thereon tangentially fthereof and-disposedim1nediately' above thesupporting member 17. The under sidesof the solid portions 19 are provided with grooves 20 disposed infsuch manner asto conveniently ac commodate' the adjacent portions of the supporting members 17'and to-freely oscillate thereon. The circular typ'egrate 18 is pro vided with a central opening 21, the purposes and advantages of which will be presently apparent; Gratebars 22 and 23 respectively have the innermost spaced ends thereof journale'd within apertured ears 24 depending from the ring 13 in'the manner as best shown in Figures 2 and 3 ofthe drawings- Se'mic1rcular grate members 25 and 26, carried upon the bars 22 and 23 respectively and having the flat sides thereof disposed in juxtaposition, ordinarily fill up the central-opening 21 in the grate 1.8. Hook arms 27, carried upon the ring 13 and arranged in oppositely disposed relation and aligned with the apertured ears 24:,journal the adjacent portions of the bars 22 and 23. H I g Segmental gears 28, carried by and simultaneouslyoperated in conjunction with the ' grate'bars 22 and 23*upon' squared portions 29 thereon, are designed for. meshing engage ment'in the manner shown in-Figures 7and Set the drawings whereby the semi-circular grate sections and 26 will be simultaneously tilted and righted. The teeth of the gears are constantly maintained in meshing engagement and held against spreading by a link member 30 having a bearing member 31 of cylindrical form upon one end telescopically associated with the grate bar 22 whereas a bearing member 32 of U-shape formation horizontally disposed upon its opposite end is designed to accommodate the remaining grate bar, namely 23, in the manner shown in Figure 8. The grate shaker bar, indicated as at '33,
is curved as at 34 upon-its lowermost end: and formed with the ball head 35. The ball head is mounted between the frame structure for-the ash pit'clean-out door and a centrally apertured cover :plate 36. The afore mentioned portion of the door frame is concaved, as at 37, to accommodate the adjacent rounded surface of the ball whereas its outer portion is projected for an appreciable distance through the centrally apertured plate 36. Long and short ears 38 and 39 respectively, inwardly projecting in spaced parallelism from that portion of the ball head extending throughthe concaved portion 37, are designed to accommodate a flange 40 upon the adjacent end of the grate bar 23 in the manner as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The innermost bers of arcuate formation carried by the rin and projecting within the enclosure define thereby, a grate of circular formation slidably mounted upon the bearing members, said circular grate having a central opening, semi-circular grate members I positioned within the central opening in the circular grate having journal portions projecting from the ends thereof, bearings arranged upon said ring to accommodate said journal portions, gear members carried by the journal portions and disposed for constant intermeshing engagement to facilitate simultaneous tilting and righting actions of the semicircular grates, an operating lever mounted by a universal connection upon the furnace, ears carried by said lever and extending into the ash pit from the universal connection with the furnace, a connecting rod establishing connection between one of said ears and the circular grate, and aflange carried by and extending from one of the grate bars secured-between said ears whereby simultaneous rotary oscillatory and tilting movements may be imparted 'to the circular and semicircular grates respectively when the operating lever is shifted obliquely across the front of the furnace.

From the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, it is obviously apparcut, that oscillatory movement 'may be imparted to the circular grate l8'when the grate shaker bar 33 is shifted toward and away from the furnace and the semi-circular grate 1nembers'25 and 26 respectively will be tilted upon'the occasion across the face of the grate shaker bar beingshifted laterally of the furnace. The flange 40 may be formed in any length to allow for appreciable outward and inward movement of the grate shaker bar whereby both forms of grates can besimultaneously operated by the one lever in a single operation when said baris shifted obliquely across the face of'the furnace.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope ofitheappended claim.
