Description

5. F. OLIV R SITZ BATH Sept. 23,1947.
Filed March 2, 1945 wi/E/vraa jHEFFIELD F OLIVE]? Patented Sept. 23, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SITZ BATH Sheffield F. Oliver, Modesto, Calif. Application March 2, 1945, Serial No. 580,527
1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to improvements in a sitz bath for the application of baths and fluid treatment to the genitals, wherein a preferably ovate basin, provided with spillways in the front and back portions of the rim thereof, operates in conjunction with laterally extended wings or flanges on opposite sides of said basin to support a medicated or other bath or liquid solution within the immediate vicinity of genitals requiring bathing or treatment, to facilitate application of a liquid solution or bath to such parts.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved portable sitz bath arranged to facilitate bathing of or a liquid application to the genitals.
Another object is to provide a new and improvided device of the character set forth, having a greatly simplified and economically produced construction arranged to support fluid within the immediate vicinity of the genitals and also to a final disposal receptacle, such as a toilet bowl or the like.
A further object is to provide a new and improved sitz bath of the type described having a reenforcing or internally extending flange arranged to provide comfort for a sitting convalescent.
A still further object is to provide a new and improved sitz bath arranged to be suspended over a final disposal receptacle, and having spillways to convey a surplus liquid into said final disposal receptacle, and thereby prevent a general overflowing of said sitz bath.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a toilet seat and bowl with my improved device mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, in the direction indicated; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, in the direction indicated, with the seat hinges omitted.
Referring to the drawings:
The numeral I is used to designate a toilet bowl with the usual internal flanges 2 around the rim thereof. A toilet seat 3 is hingedly mounted in the usual manner to rest upon the bowl l, the usual resilient bumpers 4 being provided to prevent damage to said bowl I.
My invention comprises a preferably ovate basin 6 having a preferably tubular and inwardly extended flange 1 arranged around the rim thereof and further provided with front and back spillways 8 and 9 within the front and back portions, respectively, of said basin 6 and 2 flange 1 thereof. This flange 'I is provided to not only strengthen the rim of said basin 6 but also to provide a rounded and comfortable edge or rim upon which an occupant may sit.
Lateral Wings or flanges ll, extend from opposite sides of the basin 6 and operate to rest upon the top of the toilet seat 3 and hold the basin 6 suspended within the seat opening and above the toilet bowl 1 below it, as fully disclosed in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
When thus suspended above a receptacle adapted for final disposal, the basin 6 is partially filled with an antiseptic wash or medicated liquid for application to the parts of the body which are directly in the vicinity, to facilitate such application and treatment. Any agitation of the liquid will be prevented by the inwardly extended flanges I from splashing over the sides of the basin 6 and directed into either overflow or bypass 8 or 9 and into the receptacle l for final disposal.
In addition to holding a liquid application within the immediate vicinity of the parts of the body to be treated, and also directly over a receptacle I for final disposal of such refuse or excrement as the result of an enema, the device also may be used to receive urinal specimens from small children without the usual embarassment of requiring them to deposit same into a bottle or other small receptacle. It also may be used with equal facility and convenience for assisting a bowel movement of convalescents or patients wearing a cast. The greatly simplified unitary construction may be produced easily and economically, and also affords a utensil that easily may be transported with a patient when required.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A sitz bath comprising an ovate basin having spillways formed in the front and back portions of the rim thereof and an inwardly extended flange around said rim and spillways; and laterally extended wings mounted upon opposite sides of said basin arranged to support the same within a toilet seat and substantially flush with the top of said seat.
