Description

(No MvdeL) W. N. ARNOLD.
Cotton Pickers Shade.
Patented June 1'4,1ss1-,
WITNESSES UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. ARNOLD, OF OMEN, TEXAS.
COl'TON-PICKERS SHADE.
SPECIFIGATION'fOrming part of Letters Patent No. 242,739, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed April 2, 1881. (No model.) H
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM NLARNOLD, of Omen, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Pickers Shades 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
for the use of cotton-pickers and others whose vocation obliges them to work in the field during the hot season and it consists of a portable frame having an adjustable and detachable awning or shade, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A repre sents a rectangular frame, of suitable dimensions, made of wood (or any other suitable material) and mounted upon three legs, B, arranged respectively at the ends and at the front side of said frame. The legs are provided, at their lower ends with wheels or casters O, enablii'ig the frame to be readily rolled or pushed from place to place. The legs B are connected to the frame by braces D, arranged diagonally, as shown, so as to make a structure of considerable strength, without adding much to the weight.
The front and rear sides, E E, of the frame are provided with centrally-located upwardprojecting brackets F F, provided respectively with an opening or perforation, G, and a hole, H, for the reception of the central rod,
. I, of the shade or awning P. The latter, which is constructed of canvas or any other suitable material, is secured. by stitching or otherwise to the central rod, I, and is provided at the sides or ends with loops J, for the reception of rods K K, all of said rods being made of cane or of any suitable light wood.
The ends L of the frame are provided near the front side with loops or sockets M for the reception of the front ends of the shade-rods K, the rear ends of the latter being secured by straps N, capableof being buckled or buttoned over the said rods.
In operation the frame, which is made of sufficient width to straddle two rows of cotton, (or other plants, as the case may be,) is adjusted with the front leg traveling between the rows. The sh adeis then adjusted, as described. The operator, who Walks under the shade, may easily shift the position of the frame by pushing the front leg of the latter.
This device is simple, inexpensive, and easily constructed, and it will be greatly appreciated by all who have occasion to work in the field during the hot season.
If desired, the sides of the frame may be composed of sliding sections adjusted in suitable bands or collars, and secured by set-screws, as shown in the drawings, so as to enable the frame to be properly adjusted to rows of differing widths. 3
Having thus described myinvention, I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The herein-described portable shade, consistin g of the frame A, having legs B, provided with rollers (J, brackets F F, sockets or loops M, and straps N, in combination with the shade or awning I, having rods I K K, substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM NOAH ARNOLD.
