"hirillieatiisiiiiiareiit, 194%,se re atin "3' Claims. "(CL FI-B IWIZW) My present invention, in itsbroad aspect, has reference to improvements in "'o'b'sfor manipulating the control shafts of radios; as for instance, volume control shafts andthe like. "More particularly, it is my .purpose to .provide a knob, which is simple in'c'onstructi'dn, carries a pointer and a protecting glass, canbefised with a light, andheis auiiique and improvetl scale be readily fi'tted in..place aridxwliich time one with the ;-pointer to indicateipo'sition. marinermore, my invention is characterized by simplicity and elimination of fragile parts which are likely to become broken or deranged. It can also be applied to any conventional radio control shaft, and may be manufactured and sold at relatively small cost.
Other and equally important objects and advantages will be apparent as the description proceeds, but changes in size, arrangement, form, proportion, and construction of parts may be made to meet varying conditions of use, provided such changes are within my broad inventive concept as defined by the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention:
Figure l is a front elevation of my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a transverse section'taken on the line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a rear view of the body of the knob per se;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the dial and dial support;
Figure 7 is a front view of my device partly broken away and illustrating the use of a hand; and
Figure 8 is a side view of a dial and dial support with a light arrangement and cooperating parts shown in dotted lines.
In the drawings wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:
The numeral I designates a part of a front wall of a radio cabinet through which protrudes in the usual manner a volume control shaft 2.
Mounted above the shaft 2 and extending through the cabinet wall I is a screwthreaded pin 3 which protrudes from the front of the wall as shown in Figure 2 to engage in an oblong opening 4 in the supporting base 5 of a dial device having a dial 6 connected with the supportpieceitif sheet In aen eeeeretea anana f thi of The-'bas goes a'ibliu th voluihe e d w'iiih is at-ii'ght angles to 1 d' dial 6f suiiiint lerig'tlito alfrarf'g'e th dial in fro'iivof the e a or the'shaft.
"oile'w b a radially positioned 1nr hal rargeneht or web H formed with a transverse screwthreaded opening I2, and a longitudinal opening or bore [3 at the axis of the cylinder and in line with the volume control shaft 2. Opening l3 receives shaft 2 and the opening I: communicates with bore or opening [3 and receives a set screw M with a pointed end to attach the knob on the shaft 2. The inner end of the web ll contacts the base 5 of the arm I of the dial to hold the dial on the shaft with the pin 3 holding the dial stationary, and a suitable washer l5 may be placed between the base and the enlargement if desired. The front edge of the knob is enlarged and formed with a bezel l6 and a knurled edge H; the bezel receives the protecting glass 18 after the manner of assembling a watch crystal and rim. The dial is given a fixed zero reading and a pointer l9 attached to the inner periphery of the knob ill to extend radially inward from the knob adjacent the dial, or a hand 2E! fixed on a portion 23 of the enlargement II that is aligned with the axis of the shaft 2 and extends through a central opening 24 in the dial 6 as shown in Figures 7 and 8, to travel over the face of the dial as the knob is turned to indicate to the operator stages in volume and the like. An electric light 2| may be mounted on the base 5to give an indirect lighting effect to the dial, in which case the enlargement is cut away as at 22 to permit movement of the knob. It will be noted that the enlargement is substantially triangular in cross-section with an enlarged base and a smaller end extending past the shaft 2', and that it extends the full length of the knob and well past the end of the shaft 2.
While it is believed that the operation and advantages and details of construction will be apparent from the foregoing, it is emphasized that the detailed description and drawings are for the purpose of imparting a clear understanding of my invention, whereas interpretation of its scope should only be made in the light of the subjoined claims.
nun eraa aieh I claim:
1. In a radio actuator knob, a substantially hollow cylindrical knob with the inner end open and having a transparent outer end with a pointer therein, said knob having a radially positioned web extending inward from a point in the periphery to the center thereof with a longitudinally extending centrally disposed bore, a radially positioned set screw in said knob, a stationary dial positioned in the knob on the inside of the said transparent end thereof, and an arm suspending said dial in aligned relation with the knob.
12. In an actuating knob for extending shafts of radios and the like, a substantially hollow knob with a knurled rim and a window at the outer end and with the inner end open, said knob having a radially positioned web extending inward from a point in the periphery to the center thereof with a longitudinally extending centrally disposed bore, a radially positioned set screw in said knob positioned to contact a shaft that may be placed in the bore of the web, a stationary dial positioned in the knob on the inside of the said window thereof, an arm suspending said dial with the center thereof aligned with the axis of the bore of the web, said arm having a base with an opening therein aligned with the axis of the bore of the web and dial, and means holding the arm and dial stationary.
3. In an actuating knob for extending shafts of radios and the like, the combination, which comprises, a substantially hollow cylindrical knob with a window in the outer end, a knurled rim around the outer end, and with the inner end open, said knob having a radially positioned web extending inward from a point in the periphery to the center thereof with a longitudinally extending centrally disposed bore in the inner end of the web, a set screw in said knob extending into the bore, a stationary-dial positioned in the knob on the inside of the window in the outer end thereof, a base having an opening therein with an arm extending from the base suspending the said dial with the center of the dial aligned with the center of the opening in the base and axis of the knob, said base having an opening therein by which it may be held stationary, and a light mounted on the base and positioned in the knob.
