2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in bung and spigot locking means for barrels and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide the usual barrel inwhich a spigot is installed with bung and spigotlocking equipment vof simple, inexpensiveconstruction, whereby surreptitious removal of the contents of the barrel is positively prevented.
Another object is to provide bung and spigot locking equipment of the type and for the purpose above set forth which is easy to install, foolproof, and adapted for prolonged use without developing defects from wear or misuse.
'To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and dened in the claims appended hereto.

Figure 1 is a View in end elevation of a barrel having my improved bung and spigot locking equipment applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a View in horizontal section taken on the line I2--2 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale, with the chain eliminated for the sake of clearness of illustration.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in end elevation illustrating the bung and drawn to a further enlarged scale, and
Figure 4 is a View in horizontal section taken on the line fI---4A of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, in the preferred practice of my invention, as illustrated, a screw plug-type bung is provided which is similar, with the exceptions presently noted, to the usual barrel bung, and includes an externally threaded plug I for turning into a Ibung hole h of a Ibarrel b, an outer flange 2, and a socket 3. The usual gasket 4 is provided around the plug I.
According to my invention, the described plug I is equipped with a pair of latch handles 5 of eye bolt form including Shanks 6 threaded through the bottom of the bung I at diametrically opposite sides of the socket 3. The shanks 6 terminate outwardly of the bung I in hand grip-forming, closed loops l. A pair of bar-like keepers 9 are provided on the inner ends of the shanks 6 in the rear of the plug I to extend at right angles from said Shanks, and in one end of which the shanks 6 are threaded. A resilient lock washer I 9 is provided on each shank 6 vbetween the keeper 9 and the bottom of plug I, and a lock nut II on the shank 6 in the rear of the keeper 9. The
lock Washers I0 and lock nuts I I clamp the keepers 9 therebetween and to the shanks 6 to extend from said Shanks 6 at right angles to the planes of the loops 1.
A reinforcing plate l2 is spot-welded, as at I3, in the socket 3 to the bottom of the plug I with a raised rib I4 thereon through which the shanks 6 extend.
The described bung is designed to be used, as shown in Figure l, in one end of the barrel b diametrically opposite the usual spigot I5 in said end, and for a particular purpose presently seen.
To apply the bung, the plug I is turned home into the bung hole h with the latch handles 5 disposed upon opposite sides of the line of the bung and said spigot. The latch handles 5 are then turned to dispose the loops parallel with the plane of the spigot I5, in which position of said handles the keepers 9 under rotation thereof will be extended beyond the bung hole h. and said bung latched in the bung hole. At this point, it is explained that the keepers 9 are of the requisite length to be turned by the latch handles 5 behindthe plug I into unlatching positions in which said keepers may be inserted through the bung hole h, and as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3. The resilient lock washers I0 provide for feeding of the latch handles 5 outwardly in turning said handles to dispose the keepers 9 in the described latching positions, and yielding frictional engagement of said Washers I0 with the bottom of the plug I to frictionally retain the keepers 9 in latching position, and tighten the plug I in the bung hole h.
A chain I6 and padlock Il are provided for locking the latch handles 5 and the handle I8 of the spigot I5 against being turned, said chain I5 being extended through the loops 'I of said latch handles 5 with the shackle I9 of the padlock I'I extended through the end links of said chain and said shackle straddling the handle I 8 and body of the spigot I5 behind the outlet end of said spigot to depend from the spigot with the body of the padlock behind said outlet end and the end links of said chain underneath said handle I8. Thus, both the bung and the spigot are locked against being turned by unauthorized persons.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A bung for insertion in the bung hole of a barrel comprising a threaded plug, a pair of latch handles of eye bolt form threaded through said p1ug in diametrieally opposite sides of the same with loop ends disposed forwardly of the plug for use in rotating said handles, and a pair of barlike keepers in the rear of the plug having inner ends X'e'd on said handles for rotation thereby, said keepers being rotatable by said handles into side by side oppositely extending relation to permit insertion of the same through said bung hole.
