Thi invention relates to improvements in textile apparatus and is directed more particularly to improvements in a spool construction for roving and the like.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a roving spool which is characterized by its simplicity in form while at the same time it is constructed and arranged in a novel manner for a novel function.
According to special features of the invention, in a broad way the roving spool includes end heads and a central barrel arranged in such a way that the heads are yieldingly separable. That is, the end heads carry guides for a longitudinally extending hollow barrel and end trunnion parts have hooks thereon for a spring to yieldingly hold the end heads against the barrel with looking plates insertable beneath the hook members so as to put the spring means under tension. The locking means may be removed to release the tension of the spring means and allow the heads to be removed from the central barrel thereby facilitating ready and easy disassembling of the parts.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a small scale side elevational view of a roving spool embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial longitudinal sectional View through one end of the spool construction shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts of the spool shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
End heads such as 2 are provided which may be of any suitable material such as metal, wood, plastic or whatever may be desired. Guides 4 have flanges 6 secured to the inner faces of the heads 2 by means of rivets, screws or the like indicated by 8.
As will be seen, the guides have side walls which are tapering or converge inwardly away from the heads as shown more particularly in Fig. 2. Trunnion members It are provided which have journal parts l2, collar portions I4 and inner h'ook 4 Claims. (Cl. 242-124) ends it and these are arranged in the assembled structure so that the hooks at each end of the structure extend through the head and towards one another. The heads have holes therethrough, as shown, which are slightly larger than the collar portions I l 50 that the members [B may pass through the heads.
A central spring l8 has end portions 2E1 which are adapted for engagement with the hook ends [6. Locking plates such as 22 are provided which preferably have curving outer sides, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. These plates are formed to have radial slots 24 leading into sockets 26 for receiving the collars Id of the members Ill.
The locking plates described are so formed and adapted that they may be slipped sideways on the heads to cause the member ID to pass through the slots 2d whereby the collars l4 may seat or be removed from the sockets 26 of said plates.
A central barrel 28 is provided which may be in the form of a metal tube. In the ends of the tube 28 the converging portions of the guide members 4 are receivable so that the heads and cen-' tral barrel are centered and held in axial alignment.
With the locking plates in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 wherein the collars of the members it are in the sockets 2'8, the spring I8 is under considerable tension so that the heads are yieldingly separable axially of the construction. If material is wound on the barrel under some conditions the heads may yield away from one another to some extent subject, of course, to the action of the spring.
When it is desired to remove one or both of the heads or disassemble the spool, a locking plate may be withdrawn from engagement with the member It]. For inserting the locking plate or removing it in assembling or disassembling the spool, it may be necessary to pull the members iii outwardly so that the collar Ht may disengage or engage the sockets. This will depend more or less upon the material of the spring means and the exact form of the collar and socket.
With the locking plates removed, the heads may be withdrawn over the members Ill and in that Way the spool may be disassembled. With windings of material around the spool a head or heads may be removed by removing a locking plate or plates so that the barrel may be withdrawn from the material, or the barrel may be inserted in material and the heads assema leges? 3 bled thereon by engaging the locking members with the spring connected members ID.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A roving spool comprising in combination,
a central tubular barrel, heads at opposite ends of the barrel having tapering guides extending into the barrel, spring means extending through the barrel connecting said heads resisting separating movements thereof.
2. A roving spool comprising in combination, a central tubular barrel, heads at opposite ends of the barrel having tapering guides extending into the barrel, spring means extending through the barrel connecting said heads resisting separating movements thereof, said spring means including hook members extending through said heads having spring connected inner ends and being slidable on outer faces of said head so that said hook members may pass through the slots thereof and said collars become seated in said sockets, all adapted and arranged whereby with the collars seated in said sockets the spring means and hooks act on the plates to yieldingly hold the heads against separation.
4. A roving spool comprising in combination, a central tubular barrel, heads at opposite ends of the barrel provided with guides extending into the ends thereof and provided with central apertures, a tension spring in said barrel, hook members at opposite ends of the spring extending through the apertures in said heads and having collars adapted to pass through said apertures, andlocking plates outside said heads having inner faces slidable on said heads and provided with central sockets disposed outwardly of the planes of said faces and radially disposed slots therethrough in communication with said sockets, all adapted and arranged whereby said plates may slide on said heads radially of the longitudinal axis of said barrel so that the hook members may pass through said slots and the collars become seated in said sockets thereby to tension the spring means and yieldingly hold the heads against separation.
