face on which one or more printing plates may` be releasably retained vby suitable retaining devices formed on the body of the carrier. ,Such devices are also arranged in such a way that perforations or other data representations may be formed thereon so that when devices of this character are utilized in machines of the kind, for example, disclosed in Gollwitzer Patent No. 2,132,- 411 or No. 2,296,277, respectively patented on October 11, 1938, and September 22, 1942,I data may be printed directly therefrom and under c ontrol thereof.
A device of the aforesaid character also usually has what is commonly referred to as an index card releasably retained on the face of the carrier thereof in association with the printing plate or plates and an impression is usually made on this card from at least selected of the type characters afforded on the printing plate or plates. In those instances where an index card of the aforesaid character has been provided heretofore and data representations in the formv of perforations are included on the device, aligned perforations have -been formed in the card and carrier at selected of predetermined positions to thereby afford the data representations. In such instances when it is'desired to change the data representations, the index card on the carrier has been removed and another card has been substituted therefor to thereby enable new data representations to be aorded by forming aligned perforations in the card and carrier. An arrangement of this general character is disclosed in Gollwitzer Patent No. 2,132,412, patented october 11, 1938.

Mo-re specifically, it is an object of this invention to afford data representations on a printing and control device by affording aligned perforations in the plate bearing the type characters to which the data representations are to be related and the carrier on whichsuch plate is mounted so that when one plate is removed from 'the carrier and another is substituted therefor, both the data' representations and the type characters'will be changed.`

The printing device shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the vaccompanying drawing includes a frame orcarrier F desirably'formed" from sheet metal and affording a fiat face on which in the present instance an index card C and two embossable printing plates P and PI are releasably retained. Thus, the card C is retained on the frame F by a bead UB formed along the upper edge of the frame and retaining devices as RD struck up from the face ofthe frame. In order that data representations of this nature may be afforded on a printing device of the aforesaid character, data representations in the nature of perforations D and DI areformed in the plate as PI and theunderlying portion of the frameF. Y I i .l

It will be understood, however, that my invention may be embodied in a printing de#- vice including only a single plate as, for example, a printing device such as that disclosed in Gollwitzer Reissue Patent No. Re; 22,249, patented January 12, 1943. Thus,resort would be had to a printing device of the `character disclosed in this Gollwitzer reissue patent in those instances where most if not all of the type characters on a particular printing plate would need be changed when a change was desired in the data thatcould be printed from such type charactersand under control of data representations related to `such type characters.
' However, the printing device shown in the'accompanying drawing is one from whichA a name and account number and theamount of an ac count may be printed and such data will remain more or less constant once a printing device of this character has been made'up to be suitable for use. Moreover, the type characters TI in the present instance relate to deductions and the like and are to be madewith respect to the amount represented by certain of the typecharacters T embossed on the plate P, These deductions may change from time to time and it is, therefore, advantageous to include these type characterson a plate as PI separate and apart from the plate bearing the type characters Aas T which relate to more or less unchanging data.
Furthermore, it is desirable that thev data which may be printed from the type characters as TI be capable of being interpreted so that the data that may be printed therefrom may Ibe entered into accumulators or utilized in other operations as, for` example, in machines of the character to in a plate as PI by the utilization of a punching machine of, for example, the character disclosed in Benes Patent No. 2,265,222, patented December 9, 1941, or, for example, like the punching machine disclosed in Gollwitzer Patent No. 2,265,229, also patented December 9, 1914, Particularly in those instances where the printing and control devices to which this invention relate are to ybe utilized in machines of the character disclosed in the aforesaid Gollwitzer Patents Nos. 2,132,411
and 2,296,277, the perforations as D will be formed in accordance with the code explained in these Gollwitzer patents. Moreover, since it is desirable that the sensing means adapted for cooperation with the aligned perforations 'as D and DI but capable of passing through such perfora-f tions, it would be desirable that the punching machine as disclosed in the aforesaid Benes Pate ent No. 2,265,222 or Gollwitzer Patent No. 2,265,- 229 be modified so as to accommodatea lframe as F when a plate as PI is mounted thereon for so todo will enable the aligned perforations-to be formed in the plate as PI and frame F simultaneously. Moreover, in accordance with the well'understood practice in the art, spacing flanges as SF are afforded on the back of the frame Ffor the purpose of spacing the printing devices one from the other when the devices are stored in drawers or the like when not in use and when these devices are stacked in the magazines in the machines through which the printing devices are passed.

tion in Figs. 4 and 5 and here I have shown a plate Pla mounted on a frame Fa above the plate as Pa in contradistinction to the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 wherein the plate P is mounted on the frame F above the plate Pl. Moreover, by reference to Figs. 4 and 5, it will be noted that while the aligned data representations Da and Dla are formed in the plate Pla and frame Fa, these data representations are not aligned with the type characters TI t which these perforations are desirably related. Thus where, as in the instance of the printing device shown in Fig. 4, the type characters are located in one portion of the plate, the data representations may be afforded in another portion of th'e plate. In other respects, however, the printing device shown in Figs. 4 and 5 corresponds to that shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3 and I have, therefore, applied reference characters to the Various elements in Figs.'4 and `5 that correspond to the reference characters applied to like elements as these appear in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 except that the suiix a is added to these reference characters where they appear in Figs. 4 and 5.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a printing and control device of such nature that type characters and data representationsma'y be afforded on a single element, namely, an embossable printing plate so that therefore when it is desired to change the data that may be printed from the type characters or that represented by the perforations, it is only necessary to remove a single element from th'e device. It has been found that an arrangement of this character mitigates against the likelihood that a change will be made in the type characters without there being a corresponding change in the data representations related thereto and this assures accurate functioning of devices of the character to which my invention relates.
While I have illustrated and described selected embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that these are capable of Variation and modication and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself to such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A printing device including a carrier, a printing plate having type characters thereon, and means for securing said plate to said carrier, said plate and carrier having aligned perforations formed therein at predetermined positions to afford data representations on the device whereby impressions may be made from the type characters and the data representations may be utilized to control operations related to the type characters to which such representations are related.
2. A printing device including a carrier, a printing plate having type characters embossed thereon, said plate and carrier having aligned perforations formed therein related to at least selected of the type characters embossed on the plate to afford representations of the data that may be printed from such type characters, and means for releasably securing said plate to said carrier whereby one such plate may be removed and another substituted therefor when a change is desired in the data that may be printed from the type characters and represented by the perforations so as to thereby insure that both the type characters and the data representations related thereto will be changed when a change is desired.
3. A printing device including a carrier, a printing plate having type characters embossed thereon, said plate and carrier having aligned perforations formed therein respectively in alignment with and related to at least selected of the type characters to thereby aiford representations of the data that may be printed from such type characters, and means for releasably securing said plate to said carrier whereby one such plate may be removed and another substituted therefor when a change is desired in the data that may be printed from the type characters and represented by said perforations so as to thereby insure that both the type characters and the data representations related thereto will be changed when a change is desired.
4. A printing device including a carrier, a plurality of printing plates having type characters embossed thereon, at least one of said plates and said carrier having aligned perforations formed therein to alford representations of data that may be printed from at least selected of type characters embossed on said plate, and means for releasably securing said plates to said carrier whereby either or both of said plates may be removed therefrom so that another plate may be substituted therefor to thereby insure that when the plate having data representing perforations therein is removed from said carrier the type characters to which said perforations relate will also be removed from said carrier.
