Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
GEORGE STEPPIENSON,A OF rNORTHFIELD, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORDAGE MACHINERY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,244, dated May 31, 1859.
Tc all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STEPHENsoN, of Northfield, Boone county, Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oordage Machinery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had 4to the annexed drawing, making part Of this specification.
My invention has for its objects: irst, a convenient and simple arrangement of the bObbin-frame by which it can be readily adapted to any size or number of spools, and by which anyone or more spools may be taken Out without disturbing the rest; second, a contrivance by means of which the strands are at the same time equalized', 'evened, and condensed.
ct are the side bars, made fast at their base end to the driving-pulley b and terminating at the other end in a nozzle c, containing the eyelethole s and inclosing the jaws d e, hereinafter described. A central rod f extends from the pulley b to a stretcher g. The side bars are slotted at h so as in concert with the rod f to hold the bearing-barszof the spools j. These barst' carry gudgeons 7c, upon which the spools rotate.
Z is an elastic thong of india-rubber, made fast at one end to the pulley b and at the other end to a cross-bar m, fitted to slide in the slots h of the bars. This bar also carries gudgeons on its inner side, as does also the pulley b at the other end. A few spools can easily be taken out or a few be added by simply pressing the bearing-bars asunder at that part, or one Or more or an entire range of differentsized spools may be substituted. The yarns, being passed through eyes o, attached in any usual manner to one of the bars, unite in a single strand p, which, being carried through an aperture q in the stretcher g and between the lips r of the jaws d c, is inally drawn through the eyelet s to join, in the usual way, other strands from similar revolving frames, each with its similarly-contained planetary arrangement of spools. The lip of the jaw d is caused to press toward the Opposite lip of the jaw e by. means of the thumb-screw t. The action Ot' this lip is twofold, as it assists the eyelet to condense the strand, and by modulating its pressure the issue of the strand may be regulated to agree with its fellows, and thus make a uniform and round cord, and each individual strand is also madey thereby very smooth and uniform. The jaws are fastened by pivots u tO the stretcher g,
and the jaw d is made lilnber the better to' insure the action of the thumb-screw.
What Iolam as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment of a series of movable bearing cross-bars i with side pivots orgudgeons k, the ends of the cross-bars being supported by longitudinal slots or grooves h in the Hier-bars a and connected to each other by elastic straps or thongs Z, whereby the cross-bars are made to press gently upon the ends of the spools (which are lnounted upon the side ,pivots la) to resist slightly the rO- tary motion thereof, and also admit of the ocy casional removal of One Or more of the spools without disarranging others of the series, the cross-bars, spools, and elastic straps being arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set myhand before two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE STEPHENSON. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, THOS. W. SCOTT.
