ELECTROLYTIC STEAM PAD FOR lRONING BOARDS Filed Nov. 3, 1944 Patented July 15, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTROLYTIC STEAM PAD FOR IRONING BOARDS Application November 3, 1944, Serial No. 561,656
2 Claims. 1
The object of the invention is the production of an inexpensive steam pad which will t under the covering of an ironing board and which will provide the housewife with a simple, practical device for steaming garments While ironing. The device consists of an electrically heated asbestos pad and a receptacle for water attached to the pad.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a lateral cross section of the device; in Figure 2 appear the separate sheets which make up the pad; and Figure 3 is a top View of the assembly.
Sections numbered I, 3 and 5 are sheets of asbestos cloth or fibre board. Numbers 2 and 4 are strips of metal foil attached to sheet number 3. From the receptacle 8, water is fed to the pad through 1 and 6. Number 6 is a metal strip around the edges of the pad. It is securely attached to the top and bottom of the pad near the edge, but separated from the edge itself by a small space. This space is filled with water from receptacle 8 While the pad is in operation. Openings 9 in sheet I permit the steam tc escape from the pad. In Figure 3, numbers I0, II and I2 are, respectively, an electric cord attached to the metal foils 2 and 4, a switch, and a plug.
We claim:
l. A steam producing pad for use under the top layer of fabric of an ironing board, comprising three superimposed liquid absorbent pads separated by metallic electrodes, electric ccnductors connected to the electrodes for supplying house current thereto, a water receptacle adjacent the absorbent pads, and means to conduct Water from the receptacle to the absorbent pads, whereby when current is passed through the electrodes, steam is generated to penetrate the said ironing board fabric layer.
2. A steam producing pad for use under the' top layer of fabric of an ironing board, comprising three superimposed liquid absorbent pads separated by metallic electrodes, electric conductors connected to the electrodes for supplying house current thereto, a water receptacle adjacent the absorbent pads, and means to conduct water from the receptacle to the absorbent pads, the uppermost of said pads being provided with perforations, whereby when current is passed through the electrodes, steam is generated to penetrate the said ironing board fabric layer.
