Description
(No Model.)
I H. STEPHENS. Die for Attaching Grommets to Heavy Fabrics. No. 242,391.
Patented May 31, I881.
INVENTOR WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY NrrE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY STEPHENS, 0F BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN BOYLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DIE FOR ATTACHING GROMMETS TO HEAVY FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,391, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed December 13, 1880.
set the grommets to the fabric. the same bein g retained between the maleand female parts of the grommets by the pressure of the lips or flanges of the grommets. It has been found,
however, that this mode of fastening the grommets is not snfficient to prevent the loosening or fraying out of the fabric from between the lips or flanges of the grommets, which feature has formed a serious objection to these grommets.
The object of this invention is to apply the grommets by means of improved dies, so that a more reliable and intimate connection is obtained between grommets and fabric.
The invention consists in providing either one or both of the dies employed for attaching the grommets to the fabric with projecting teeth, for the purpose of indenting or barbing the lips or flanges simultaneously with the setting of the grommets, so that they bind more securely on the fabric and prevent their playing loose therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of the dies employed in setting the grommets; and Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, a top and a bottom view of the female and male part of the die; and Figs. 4 and 5 are a top view and a vertical longitudinal section on line 0041, Fig. 1,0f a grommet set by my improved dies.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the lower or female, and B the upper or male, portion of my improved die for attaching grommets to heavy fabricssuch as leather, canvas, duck, &c. The male part of the grommet is placed on a central movable and spring-acted tongue, a, of the female die A, which tongue is forced down into the lower die by a fixed tongue, I),
(No model.)
of the upper die, B, after the fabric and female part of thegrommet is placed in position on the female part A of the die. The fixed tongue I) of the male die B entersinto the cor responding slots of the male and female parts of the grommet, and causes the setting of the grommet and its connection to the fabric in the usual well-known manner.
The new feature of my die consists in providing either the female part A or the male part B, or both, with projecting teeth d, which, when used in both dies, are preferably so arranged that the tecth of one die alternate with those of the other. These projecting teeth d serve for the purpose of indenting or barbin g one or both lips or flanges of the grommet, so as to cause the raised parts or barbs to enter into the fabric. By these irregularly-punchedup portions or barbs the grommets bind more seculely upon the fabric and prevent the same from getting loose from or fraying out of the grommet.
The projecting teeth may be used with any shape of die and grommet, whether they are round, square, oblong, or oval, the essential feature being the indenting or barbing of the lips or flanges of the grommets by means of the teeth of the dies, so that a more reliable and intimate connection of the same with the fabric is obtained. As this is accomplished simultaneously with the setting of the grommets by the direct action of the dies, no extra labor is necessary therefor.
Havin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A die for attaching grommets to fabrics, in which the male or thefemale part, or both parts, are provided with projecting teeth around the central tongues, to indent or barb the lips or flanges of the grommet and cause it to adhere rigidly to the fabric, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of December, 1880.
HENRY STEPHENS.
\Vitnesses PAUL GOEPEL, CARL KAEP.
