Patented June 24, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAFE SMOKE PIPE HOLDER Henry Yost, Kenton, Ohio Application November 20, 1944, Serial No. 564,393
2 Claims.
My present invention, in its broad aspect, has reference to improvements in smoke pipe holders and gauges, and is designed to positively and definitely gauge and limit the distance which a smoke pipe is inserted into a chimney or flue thereby preventing obstruction of the flue by the smoke pipe which would interfere with the draft, and securely holding the smoke pipe in place in the flue opening without the use of guide wires or wedges. Furthermore, the spring tension of my device prevents the smoke pipe from working out of the chimney, and my device is simple in construction, sturdy, practical and eflicient in operation. When the pipe collar is pushed up against the chimney my device is concealed.
Other and equally important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings, but it is emphasized that changes in form, size, shape, construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from my broad inventive concept, or the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention:
Figure 1 is a section through a chimney showing a smoke pipe and flue and my device applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a smoke pipe with my device applied thereto; and
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawings wherein like characters of reference are used to designat like or similar parts:
The numeral l designates a chimney with a flue 2 and a smoke pipe opening 3. A smoke pipe 4 is interpolated in opening 3 which has a liner 5. About the smoke pipe is a collar 6.
In order to limit the extent of insertion of the smoke pipe into the chimney and to hold it against displacement, I provide a bent spring wire holder and guide 1 which has a semi-circular section 8 which extends about and conforms to the smoke pipe and which has circularly looped ends 9 leading into guide legs l which extend longitudinally of the pipe and terminate in hooked ends II. The short length [2 between the legs and the loops 9 inclines toward the smoke pipe in Figure 3, and also inclines outwardly away from.
the end of the smoke pipe as shown in Figure 1.
In operation the spring tension of the legs flrmly wedges the smoke pipe in place, and this action is enhanced by body part 8 and loops 9. The loops 9 limit the extent of insertion of the pipe into the chimney and my device is concealed back of the collar 6.
It is again emphasized that interpretation of the scope of my invention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A guide and holder for supporting smoke pipes, having a semi-circular section bent or shaped to flt the pipe to be supported, portions on the extremities of said section which are bent to form diametrically opposed loops which extend outwardly from the ends of said section and lie in substantially the same plane as said body, legs connected by inclined short lengths to each loop, said legs extending transversely of said section and adapted to enter a wall opening in which the end of the pipe may be placed, and hooks on the ends of the legs which are bent inwardly thereof and in parallel relation with said legs, which are adapted to be positioned over the end of said pipe to limit the insertion of the pipe into the wall opening receiving the pipe.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1, wherein the guide and holder is of one piece spring wire construction bent to form the semi-circular section, legs and hooks.
HENRY YOST.
