NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR BIRD, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, NEW YORK.
CHAMBER-VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,254, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed April 21, 1881. (No model.)
[[0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR BIRD, of Jeffersonville,in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chamber-Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
The object ofmy improvements are to provide means for tightly sealing vessels used in sick-rooms, hospitals, and other places, so as to prevent escape of gases and odors and avoid offensive sights.
The invention consists in swinging covers fitted for being opened and closed by hand or by movement of the seat, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partially in section, of the improved vessel as closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the covers open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, and Fig. 4 a sectional plan view, of the vessel having the cover fitted for operation by the seat.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. 7
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, A is the vessel, which is to be made of metal, pottery-ware, or other suitable material, and preferably in a semi-spherical form, as shown. The vessel is fitted upon a stand, B, which may be of any suitable construction.
The cover consists of the two portions 0 G, of spherical quadrant form, attached by pins to a, so that they can swing upward and close together or downward outside the vessel. The covers are formed with inwardly projecting flanges b, and the upper edge of the vessel has an outward flange, 0, so that the upward movement of the covers is limited by the engagement of the flanges. The two portions of the cover may be formed to lap for insuring a tight joint, or suitable packing may be provided for that purpose both at the outer edges and at the flanges b 0.
At one side of the vessel the pivot-pins a are fitted with pinions or racks d,intermeshin g, to insure simultaneous movement of the covers. At the opposite side one quadrant, O, is fitted with a handle-arm, c, projecting into a convenient position for use. There is also fitted at one side a spiral spring, f, havingits ends connected to the two portions 0, so as to retain the covers closed, and also acting to draw them open after they are first moved by the handle.
In this form the vessel may be used with or without a seat. By a movement of the handle the covers are separated and the spring f carried below the pivots 0, when the spring will react and draw the covers fully downward, so that the vessel will be completely open, as
shown in Fig. 2. A reverse movement of the handle effects the closing.
In Figs. 3and Athe supporting-base is fitted with tubular posts g, containing springs 71, upon which are rods t" that support the seat k,
so that the seat can rise and fall. 6
Thequadrant-covers O are fitted with racks l l, which are engaged by racks m m, projecting downward from seat k. The seat being moved down by weightof the person, the racks move the covers downward, as indicated by the dot- 7o ted lines. As soon as the seat is relieved of weight the springs h raise the seat and close the covers.
The seat may be connected to the covers by rods, so as to insure movement of the covers by the seat, and other devices maybe substituted for the racks. Suitable devices may be provided to hold the covers securely closed in place of the spring. I do not limit myself to these or other details of construction.
The utilityand advantages of this invention are manifest. The covers necessarily remain with the vessel ready for use at anytime. The vessel is tightly closed by the covers, and thus the inconveniences attending the use of night- 8 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the vessel A and pivoted quadrant-covers O O,fitted for movement by handle 0, substantially as shown and described.
2. The handle 6 and springf, combined with the pivoted covers 0 and vessel A, substantiallyas shown and described, for operation as specified.
3. The combination of vessel A, swinging :00
covers 0, and seat 7c, fitted for vertical movement and connected with the covers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
ARTHUR BIRD.
